Billy Jack Redux

He would calmly take off his shoes before avenging himself on evildoers --- sometimes monologuing as he did it, sometimes silently. But the implication was clear: The shoe removal was a foreshadowing a brutal asskicking.

And yet nobody would see the shoe removal for the oppotunity it was --- a chance to fight or flee. He was just too cool to make a move on. You could just see the thoughts in the eyes of the bad guy, going, "I guess I should fight or flee but this is some really compelling stuff right here."

This is why you can't explain the seventies to children. Made all the sense in the world within it's cultural context. Makes virtually no sense otherwise. For twenty minutes in time, this guy was cooler and tougher and more righteously brutal than the love child of Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson could ever hope to be.

One Tin Soldier (The Legend of Billy Jack)
by Dennis Lambert & Brian Potter
performed by Jinx Dawson and Coven in the movie "Billy Jack" (1971)

Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago,
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley-folk below.

On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone,
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.

Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there."

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people,
So they won their just reward.

Now they stood beside the treasure,
On the mountain, dark and red.
Turned the stone and looked beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

When this flick came out it was the shit. Everyone had to see it. At least everyone aged 12-15. Don't recall what they did in their marketing to attract us, but the whole theater was filled with just kids. I remember thinking (re: Tom Laughlin): This guys good. Where did he come from?
