Duck Dynasty

Ok I'll start it.

Am I really the only one here that watches this show?

I find it hilarious, and being a Christian, I appreciate the prayers at the end and the lack of annoying BEEPS throughout the dialogue. Believe me, I would rather hear the F word anytime than that beep, but knowing they are not even swearing is a geniune relief.

That being said, I read the article in GQ, and though I don't support his views on gays (though I agree with him in theory* I am totally tolerant of all people), I think what he said about African Americans in the 1960s is a little odd to say the least.

THAT being said, I found the reporter's condescending attitude (HIS obscenities, for example) to be totally uncalled for. And whoop de doo, Drew Magery, you've shot a gun before, we're so impressed. Asshole.

If the show goes off the air, it's okay with me, I think it's about to jump the shark anyway, perhaps in the way that Orange County Choppers did. I wonder if that was Phil's idea all along...

Poor Korie though, she doesn't deserve what's happened to her.

*To clarify, I could not imagine being attracted to another woman.

Re: Duck Dynasty

I had never heard of the show until I got this year's Mets yearbook, and it seemed that half of the players said Duck Dynasty was their favorite show. Never heard of this Phil guy until this recent incident.

The only thing I take out of all this is that Sarah Palin and her friends have no idea what the First Amendment is.

Re: Duck Dynasty

Just read it right now. Not sure what kind of portrayal Duck Dynasty bro thought he would get from effing GQ Magazine, but it sounded about what I'd expect it to be. Thought a little of Pearlman/Rocker while reading it (two guys from opposite everything) and while trying to find out more about Drew Magary (author, GQ, Deadspin, and Gawker contributor), I found this Jeff Pearlman interview with him. Jeff used to think he was 'snarky'.

On working with black people in the fields in pre-Civil Rights Louisiana, I think a guy like Phil Robertson is the last guy I'd ask to accurately describe the plight of the early 60's southern black farm worker. Shocking to hear that none of his black co-workers complained to him about the 'doggone white people'! Delusional and out-of-touch at best.

The homophobic shit goes way beyond. Comparing gay people to terrorists and those who fuck animals crosses a line with most rational-minded people. He can definitely say whatever the hell he wants (and he did!) and the government didn't attempt to silence him or throw him in jail. But it's everyone else's turn to say whatever the hell they want now, and getting suspended by the employer you've just embarrassed is no affront to free speech.

BTW, never seen Duck Dynasty. OK with that.

BTW BTW - agree with him in that I also prefer vagina to a man's anus.

Re: Duck Dynasty

- Never seen the show. I was the one who asked here a few weeks back what it was all about.

- Not surprising that this thing is being turned into a political football.

- A&E's reaction to this has added to the controversy rather than subtracted from it. They build a show around a clan of religious southerners led by a self-styled preacher and then act like they're shocked, SHOCKED! that he comes off in an interview like a religious self-styled preacher.

Re: Duck Dynasty

Call me a Magary apologist*, but the guy didn't just give Drew rope with which to hang him... he twisted it into a noose, stuck his head inside to check the size of it, and then pointed out a nice tree.

I've seen, like, three minutes of the thing. I can see why some might find it charming, but any such charms are completely lost on me. (Not backwoods Louisianans, the show.) I mean, if the best thing one can say about it is, "They pray in it, and they don't curse, at least," well...

*Full disclosure: Met him once or twice. Decent guy. Doesn't curse nearly as much as you'd expect. SUPERtall.

Never seen the show, obviously I have seen bits and pieces of it in passing, read what he said and the surrounding controversy . I don't agree with his views but support his right to say stupid crap, but damn it people won't be happy until he loses his part in the show because that's what we do best, say something stupid and pay with your job/show.

Just knowing what the show is about I imagine it's audience is not liberal leaning types like myself, I say that because it seems the people that are upset the most are liberals.

Don't care. Can't care. It's not any better or worse than the thousands of hours totally lost watching television. I wouldn't waste my time with this or anything else on TV.

I watch live sports on television and, when I'm feeling nostalgic, movies from the 1980's and 1990's that I've already seen 50 times and know I'll enjoy. And that's it. And I can't say that I feel like I'm missing anything. You can keep your water cooler conversations.

I think they are free to speak their minds. As free as the Constitution allows. That Duck Dynasty guy can say whatever the hell he wants to say. This ain't no free speech issue.

As a private citizen you have the right to speak your mind, yes. But when you are a public figure you should watch what you say or expect to face the consequences. I'm sure A&E had media trainers for this guy. He should've known better. You can chalk the black/white stuff up to willful ignorance but the gay stuff was really offensive.

Didn't he learn from Paula Deen?

Re: Duck Dynasty

No, you don't need to.

Either have a conversation or don't. But please don't offer an opinion and then retreat when asked to back it up. It's a sure way to lose every disagreement.

I don't watch the show and don't read the magazine and am largely unaware of everything this is about. I take it he doesn't like gay marriage and didn't express his disagreement in a delicate way.

But please don't refuse to make a case about where you stand and assume you know where I stand when you don't. We're able to talk to one another here.

Do you remember what "free speech" protection means? I do not think it means what you think it means, Mr. Ad Hominem.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

people get fired all the time when their words and actions bring embarrassment to their employers, particularly when such words and actions may lead to financial loss for their employers due to a loss of customers who are offended by the offending words and actions.

and its never a first amendment situation.

oe: for the record, i think its stupid that anytime somebody says anything remotely offensive in a public forum, they get fired and all we learn from it is that saying offensive things in public can get you fired so you have to say those things in private.

if a&e really wanted to 'do the right thing' here, maybe they should take the duck dynasty guys and have them learn that gays really ain't so scary afterall. there's a veritable ratings gold mine of very special episodes they could run through.
