Exploring the possibility of going to Washington and Oregon in 2014.

Mentioned this to someone recently, and they said "Washington D.C. or Washington State?"

Re: Vacations 2014

It's right between Oregon and British Columbia, and west of Idaho.

But that's probably not what you meant. I'm thinking Seattle (just for a couple of days; we've been there before), Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, and the San Juan Islands. If there's anything else that you think is worthwhile, I'd be glad to hear about it.

I did mean where in Washington....

He grew up near the Olympic National Park and a ferry ride away from Victoria, BC. We were just there last week - let us know if you're going to be in that neck of the (literal) woods.

The Butchart Gardens in Victoria are definitely worth a visit, btw.

My bro works for the Air Force, so he's living at the Ramstein base (Ramstein-Meisenbach), which looks like southwestern Germany. So that will be my home base (literally) in Germany, but will be venturing out to (hopefully) lots of places. My brother offered to babysit for me on a jaunt to Amsterdam. I wonder if anything fun happens there.

Speaking of cheese, going up to Vermont in a week and a half for the weekend. plenty of cheese, beer, ice cream (Ben & Jerry's tour, woo), maple stuff and all that. I won't jump in a lake though, cause it'll probably be like 4 degrees and I'm not a polar bear.

I know I said I was going nowhere, but I'm actually going down to Virginia for a communion (wife's goddaughter) this weekend.

Doing it in parts, staying outside Baltimore Friday Night, driving the rest of the way, and starting back on Saturday night. haven't quite decided where to stay that night yet.

the Tide are away, the Nationals are away, and i couldn't convince my wife she wanted to linger in Richmond Sunday just for a meaningless minor league game. Going to have to content myself with stopping a beverage place and stocking up on Virginia-only type beers.

Thanks, second person to do so. I guess it depends when I'm done with the communion on Saturday. I'm hoping to have time to do something like that but if it's late probably not. At least I get girl scout cookies out of it.

Also depends where I book the hotel for that night, and of course hinges on convincing the pregnant wife that not only should we stop at a beer distributor or two, we should go to a brewery for dinner. ;-)

Re: Vacations 2014

So as you may know I was in Wisconsin for a week, here are some hilites.

First nite there, met the Monks and shared a beer with this sweetheart:

The following morning was going out for a run when a big coach bus pulled up in front of the neighboring Hotel Pfister where the Mets stay. Noting a line of lumpy autograph seekers out there, we went in for a further look but found only a giant stash of Met luggage in the lobby; the team has apparently already departed for the ballpark. I felt like a fool shooting photos of luggage and the lobby was dark, but snapped away anyway. Great tags. Who's Nishio?

Spent the day at "Germanfest" which sounds more German than it really was, despite there being German bands and German foods and some German beers and guys in Leiderhosen, it was mostly a street fair with a German theme, the same venue with small changes could be made up for "Italianfest" the next week.

Food portions out there are enormous by the way, as were a lot of the people we saw. Its weirdly nice to stay at a place where you stuff yourself every night and needn't feel too fat.

We stayed at the stylish Hotel Metro and hung around the trendy Third Ward, where there was still more food and beer.

Never found Mr. C's hardware or Arnold's Drive-In but did encounter the "Bronz Fonz"

Next we headed way upstate, past the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field to the Northern peninsula on Lake Michigan, very beatutiful countryside filthy with cherry orchards and shops selling everything cherry: Cherry pie, cherry salsa, cherry wine, cherry everything. Took two boats out to Rock Island in the middle of the lake for some hiking. This was what it looked like from the boat

They do a thing up there is called a Fish Boil, where they cook whole whitefish, potatoes and onions in a cauldron of saltwater under firewood, then make it boil over, Gene Simmons style. Fish was pretty good!

We then headed a few hours Southwest to Madison where lots of college students in bikinis hung around the lakefront campus & every restaurant had a better local beer selection than the next. I'd have flunked out of there in 3 weeks, at least while the weather was nice.

Retail stores love when customers use the merchandise to take selfies then don;t buy anything.

Finally, spent a day out in the "Wisconnsin Dells" which is a highway offramp community consisting of casino-sized indoor/outdoor waterparks. Crazy fun. In the end it was sort of weird to vacation in places where the locals vacation, but we had lots of fun and the weather -- cool in the mornings and evenings, never too hot daytimes, was just swell for July-August.

Yes, be warned that when you say "Going Oktoberfest, any tips?" I'm likely to ramble on for pages and pages.

Rural Germany can be fun too. I enjoyed seeing how people live in other countries outside of cities. My wife has family in northern Germany where we spent some time. Very much the middle of nowhere. (Bad Bederkesa)

It's so interesting how different north and south are, basically different countries. Bavaria/HRE versus Prussia.

I'm reluctant to say what my favorite Germany experience was, because a big part of why it was so great was because I didn't have any expectations.

So I won't say. I'll just say it was in a town in the state of Baden-Wόrttemberg.

But as for Munich... I loved the Deutsches Museum. ( http://www.deutsches-museum.de/en ) It's definitely one of the best museums I've ever been to. The only thing frustrating was that being there with three other people (my wife and two kids) we each had to linger in some places where we wanted to move on, and not linger long enough at other places. If I lived in the area, I'd be sure to, every once in a while go there by myself for a full day. It's a Smithsonian-caliber museum that shows the history of technology. And not just 20th and 21st Century technology, but ancient technology as well. (And I have to say, I found the older stuff a lot more interesting than the more recent stuff. If I want to see current technology I can just go to Best Buy.)

Re: Vacations 2014

I went to visit my baby bro & his fam in Germany in March (near the Rammstein AF base). We went to Munich for an overnight stop coming back from the alps and it was lively. From midday, the town was jammed with day drinkers, swilling those giant, comedy prop jugs of beer. We couldn't get into a restaurant or bar anywhere. Turns out Bayern Munich were playing a home match that day. When the match started, everyone without a ticket found a TV and those places without a TV were then accessible. This place is probably like Chili's to people from Munich, but it was super cool to wander through and I wish we could've found a bench for all of us, cause I would've loved to drink a couple jugs of blonde beer there.

WWII history is everywhere, as you'd expect. It's not a pick-me-up or anything, but we stopped at the Dachau concentration camp on the way home from Munich. My nephew is older than Lunchpail by several years (he's 12) and it was way heavy for him (hell, it was way heavy for all of us), but it was really a quiet, sad, but important and well-done memorial to the poor people who ran into the shittiest side of humanity and saw first-hand what we're capable of. http://www.kz-gedenkstaette-dachau.de/index-e.html

The Alps were gorgeous. We stayed in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, near the Austrian border. It was the site of the '36 winter Olympic games (I learned that Hitler combined the towns of Garmisch and Partenkirchen so that as one, it would be a big enough place to host). The little stadium where they hosted the ski jump is still there and it's wild. This tiny, little brick circle with these wooden benches and this huge-ass ski jump on the hill that propels the jumper into the middle of the "stadium". Cute, little town. Great hiking and nature.

Jelly, man. You're gonna have the best time.

Going to Bavaria?
A must see is a side trip to the town of Fussen to see the Neuschwanstein Castle.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuschwanstein_Castle

It is the castle upon which the Disney Sleeping Beauty Castle was based. (They will tell you there that the castle in Fantasyland was also based on it)
We were there right after Oktoberfest. There was snow on the ground. The bus left up off at the bottom of the hill, and since it was muddy, we took the horse drawn buggy to the castle.
Beautiful. But, go to the bathroom before you leave, because return busses don't run too frequently.

didn't make it there ourselves. There's one somewhat near Prague too, but didn't get there either. Did see Anne Frank's house earlier in the trip though, not that that's quite as up close.

Neuschwanstein is nice and all, and hey, castles are always cool, but it's quite an obvious tourist trap. It's unfinished, Phillip barely lived there before he died. It was built in the 1800s so it's not like it's 1000 years old..

We went there with Mike's Bike Tours. Wasn't bad. they put you on a coach bus, talk to you some, get off at the edge of the city, show you a video from the tour guide that gets on when you get nearby. Then you go to Kid Icarus restaurant and can Alpine Slide or hang glide or watch a magic show and eat/drink before your scheduled appointment (which they take care of for you) then you can either take the bus up to the castle, or hike up with the group (it's a rougher hike than they let on)

The castle itself is only like 30 minutes and no pictures, but you get some pretty views when you're headed up, particularly walking.

I'd say that Neuschwanstein is worth seeing, but if you're not able to squeeze it in, don't sweat it. I wouldn't call it a "must see."

One tip about traveling in Europe with small kids: If your son is still at an age where he gets fidgety in restaurants before the food comes, be sure to bring along something to keep him entertained. Unlike in the United States, most restaurants in Europe don't give kids free crayons and paper placemats with preprinted activities to keep them entertained.

Also it seems like waiters in Europe generally give you your space once you have your food. I found I usually had to actively seek them out to request the check every time.

Looking forward to relaxing on the beach, exploring the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich, and taking in the animals and jungle scenery of Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. We will see what other adventures await us once we arrive and have a little time to unwind and get suggestions from the locals.

That means that Mrs. Point won't be running the Tufts 10K this year.

But please let her know that I'm thinking of running that one again next year!

I let her know metfairy.

Anyone who has been to Cooperstown recently have any recommendations for things an almost 3-year-old and and almost 7-year-old would enjoy? Restaurants? We're going to the Hall of Fame and the Farmer's Museum, but other than that we're open to anything.

Howe's cavern ain't so far away. Neither is Secret Caverns. well. not far away by middle of nowhere NY standards. if you're going/coming from the east it's pretty much on the way.

I obviously recommend Ommegang brewery because that's what I do. Probably not as fun for young children, but I have little doubt I'll probably drag a young girl there sometime in the next 7 years so why shouldn't you?

You have to have a meal at Moishes Steakhouse

And I highly recommend the Filet Mignon Poutine -

(Actually, I recommend anything there - it's a fabulous place!)

Re: Vacations 2014

You're welcome. I went to Moishes with my family around 35-40 years ago, and also went there with friends in 1986; it has always been memorably good.

D-Dad and I were just in Montreal a week ago. It's a friendly city and the subway is clean and easy to use. It helps to know French, but it's not necessary.

Have a great trip!

Re: Vacations 2014

If you know four French words - bonjour, sil vous plait, merci, and au revoir - you'll do great in Montreal.

"Excusez-moi" is also useful if you bump into someone.

I've spent a fair amount of time in French speaking countries and can use the Willets words plus a few more. I know how to order a restaurant check for example. mrs. sharpie has passable French.

Enjoying 7 days of relaxing on the beach and relaxing around the pool in Kitty Hawk, NC. The outer banks are beautiful this time of year.

I could be quite envious of that. Heck I'd be jealous of 7 hours relaxing on the beach...

Re: Vacations 2014

I owe you guys an update and much thanks for your help with our visit to Germany. It was a total success.

We met with native friends who live near Augsburg, a city west of Munich. We knew them cuz our kids were in school together and neighbors before they moved back there.

As you may know I had vague plans to check out Oktoberfest but through a stroke of luck, our friend had a friend who had an in at Oktoberfest, and me & Wifey met with him and his crowd on the second night we were there (Lunchpail stayed with his friends and their Mom).

We met outside the Lowenbrau "tent" (more like a warehouse) in the early evening, the place was packed with people waiting at the door to get in, and it was raining hard, but then in a scene like Goodfellas where they go through the kitchen of the club to see Bobby Vinton, we got called around back, entered through the side and were led to a table smack in the middle of the tent, right next to the bandstand. It turned out of of the guys' wives was a longtime server and he had some local juice. This was an absolutely primo location and coming from outdoors in the rain, a true treat. The beers were gigantic, and when the first one was emptied and the second one came, RIGHT THEN, was one of the magical moments of my life. Everybody got loose and happy, and this went on for five hours. Met a million people from all over, sung songs with total strangers, etc etc and for all the beer saw very little brawling or girls crying and like that.

It was a lot of fun, and really helped to go at night, without the boy, and have an in. It was so good we didn't feel a need to go back the rest of the week except to have Lunchy check out the rides and stuff one afternoon. We did keep up the practice of ordering giantic beers everywhere we went, it was just fun.

With all Munich hotels sold out we sort of rolled the dice on a Travelocity deal outside of town, but it turned out to be a nice joint and walkable to an easy subway ride to the city. We spent several days just wandering around Munich and saw the summer castle of Ludwig, the '72 Olympic site that's become a very nice public park (including a rock museum in the tower we didn't actually get to see), the Deutches Museum which as cool as advertised and would definitely have been worth a second visit. Although we expected rain and cool weather we got sunny and nice almost every day.

Whacky submarine control at Duetches Museum

We visited Dauchau, I learned a lot, and though we were warned that it was inappropriate for 8 year old, we just avoided the movie and he was fine with it.

Augsburg was a nice city in itself, though as home to an airplane manufacturer (now part of Airbus), got bombed to smithereens in WWII. They rebuilt the old town hall and its "Golden Room" which is a huge meeting room with gold on the walls and ceilings, stunning. The nearby Fuggerei is one of the oldest public-housing developments ever, dating back to a trust established in the 1500s that left so much $$ for the local Catholics that people still live there today for 1 euro a year. Its underground bomb shelter is now a museum about how people in Augsburg & the Fuggerei survived the bombings, pretty interesting.

We didn't make it to Garmisch but did do the Disney castle thingy. A nice hike. On the way we stopped at a UNESCO pilgrimage church in a very nice setting.

Re: Vacations 2014

Oh my, is that young man really your son already?

Looks like a blast of a vacation! My son had his first beer (that he admitted to) in Germany. He is longing to go back. Not for the beer; the beer was warm there and he is 25 now and can buy properly chilled Yuengling here in the States. He's longing for the rest of the stuff there, castles, hamlets, etc.

Looks like a great trip Widey :)

Curious if you had food/ chicken/Hahnchen? Everyone says it's delicious and i missed out, but eating there seemed like a chore.

Re: Vacations 2014

It's not every day that you get to cross off a long held Bucket List item. But last week D-Dad and I did it - we have wanted to visit Australia since before we had kids, and last week we did it. It was a short trip - just to Sydney and Melbourne - but a great one. We visited the Sydney Opera House, climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and saw little penguins return home at dusk to feed their children. It's a beautiful country, and I'm thrilled to have finally had the opportunity to visit it.
