Re: Cheese 2014

Yesterday was a fun day - 3 championship games in 2 arenas all in one day.

First, Fairfield Prep beat Darien 2-1 in OT to win the CIAC Division I state championship at Yale's Ingalls Rink:

Then it was up to Mohegan Sun - first, Lauralton Hall defeated South Windsor for their first-ever Class LL State championship:

Then it was Bridgeport Central against Fairfield Prep for the Class LL boys title.

Paschal Chukwu ended the first half with a dunk on an in-bounds alley oop to put Prep up by 18:

Then Central came storming back, and upset the previously unbeaten Prep, 76-73.

the only way to possibly mix them up is if i'm handed one of them, sleeping, in the dark, in the middle of the night.

they're really entirely different.

its not a bad question at all, btw. its just that they're that different. it really helps that they're fraternal, of course. i had deep deep worries that i'd get them hopelessly confused if they were identical.

the µmms are almost exactly the same size (same length, a few ounces different in weight), have the same noses and eye color, but are otherwise rather dissimilar.

they have different hair color, length, and texture, they have different eye shapes, mouths, ears, chins, and foreheads, and slighly differnet skin pigmentation. they also have different voices and [u:30oimc7i]dramatically [/u:30oimc7i]different cries. µmmL can shatter glass. he's loud and high pitched. µmmR has a more mellow, raspy cry. also, and quite significantly, whereas µmmR is perfectly fine without one, µmmL [crossout:30oimc7i]takes a pacifier[/crossout:30oimc7i] desperately needs a pacifier at all times.

OE: which is not to say that this past weekend, µmmL didn't end up in µmmR's crib after he was handed to me, sans pacifier, with the intent of getting him to burp and then sleep, in the middle of hte night. it was indeed dark, and i couldn't really see his lack of chin dimple, nor could i apprecieate how much longer and finer his hair was.

So how and at what point does one learn of their un-identical-ness?
I mean, short of a DNA test (which I assume couldn't/wouldn't be done until after birth), is it just the immediate, eye-ball method of 'nope, don't look enough alike' or is there something in between those two high-tech/low-tech extremes for separating identical vs fraternal?

metsmarathon
Apr 04 2014 07:09 AM
Re: Cheese 2014

if you look at them and they look different, like two totally different people, then they're not identical.

if you look at them and see clear genetic differences that are not simpply hte result of different growth rate, or just slight differences in gene expression in utero, or like a birthmark or some such, like clear structural differences, then they're not identical.

if one of htem has mom's ears, and the other had dad's ears, then they're not identical.

each egg and sperm cell is different. when an egg and a sperm cell meet, that is a unique combination. in identical twins, that fertilized egg splits early on as it starts dividing rapidly, leaving two of the exactly same combination of genes.

in fraternal twins, there are two egg-sperm pairings, each unique and different from each other.

now, swap out µmmL for minimm, and we'd be a little less certain that they're not identical. i mean, there are definitely slight differences between µmmR and minimm at the same age, but goddamn, its like he got his own mini me.

OE: but i realize i missed your real question. yeah, i htink if you cannot find the differences, then the only real option is genetic testing. but im not sure. never looked into it.

OFE: also, in utero, they can tell if the twins are definitely identical, or maybe fraternal. if htey share a placenta and/or a amniotic sac, then they are defnitely identical. if htey have their own amniotic sacs and their own placentas, then they could be either fraternal or identical. there is no way for fraternal twins to share an amniotic sac or a placenta. if a fertilized egg splits super-early into identical twins, the babies may get their own sacs and placentas. if the split happens later, once they're already in the uterus, then they are likely to share. (sharing is riskier, btw)

since identical twins are 10x less likely than fraternal twins, if there are two amniotic sacs, its much more likely that the twins are fraternal.

Re: Cheese 2014

Yeah I understand the difference between identical and fraternal. I was just curious, since there are several ways to know prior to birth that twins are on the way, whether there was also a pre-birth way of knowing which type were impending, or if the whole thing remains a surprise until the tried and true post-birth eyeball test.

The Lopez twins who play in the NBA (I think one is or was on the Nets) are easy to tell apart because they wear their hair very differently, but I think it might be tougher otherwise (I dont watch enough basketball or see them side by side to know). But I heard them say a while back (maybe while still in college) that they weren't sure if they were identical or fraternal, something that struck me as quite odd since fraternal twins or no more likely to look alike than other siblings except for the obvious same age thing.

Showed it to a friend who's taken some photography courses and he nit-picked it to death. (It's probably a tough shot to compose regardless)

He suggested the subject being so small, and the first thing you see left to right leaves you with a lot of just blur.
I quickie-edited it so the subject is at the right of the photo and is more central. Couldn't fix the horizon line to make it level w/ paint, but I think that'd help too.

Re: Cheese 2014

It drives me crazy when simple static shots don't have a level horizon - it's a basic thing. Sometimes, like in this shot, a level horizon line isn't critical here. I do agree that the original shot was too busy, and your crop makes it much better.

The fact that the red seats stand out, and lead the eye in a curve to the subject helps, too.

two things i'm totally done with: most HDR, and fake tilt-shift.

i'm still okay with fake tilt-shift in instagram, however. but when its done poorly in photoshop, it's dumb as rocks and twice as offensive.

It's one thing where the camera is tilted purposely for composition.

Tilt-shift is the act of tilting the lens from the plane of the image in the camera. This allows for selective focus, and generally makes an actual scene look like a model:

(not mine)

A tilt-shift lens:

(again, not mine)

Fake tilt shift just renders the out of focus effect through software like photoshop.

metsmarathon
Apr 29 2014 07:55 AM
Re: Cheese 2014

my big issue with fake tilt-shift is that it's frequently done poorly. and by that, i mean that things that are clearly not on the same focal plane, but are in the same line, are in focus, and the rest of the frame is blurry.

like this.

everything is blurry above the line, and blurry below the line. regardless of where hte actual focal plane should be. if the horizontal region bisecting the middle of the picture, where all the people are, is truly on the focal plane, then theres no way the top of hte tower would also be in focus, perfectly coincident with that line, and the top of the church should also be out of focus where it meets that region.

unless everything i understand about optics is wrong.

fake tilt shift is obvious when the region of focus makes no sense with the topography of the scene, and especially when it makes no effort to make sense with the topography of hte scene.

putting a spot of focus in the middle of a scene isn't quite as offensive to me, but the lazy fake tilt-shift line kills me.

i'm not always a photography snob, but when i am, it's because of technology-aided laziness.

Re: Cheese 2014

Not sure I'm following exactly (though I can clearly spot the stupid focus line there)

Is what you're saying that if the focus was truly that street there, in a real image the tower would be out of focus cause it's really a lot closer? But because it was down sloppily in post-processing (i.e. without cutting out the tower to a separate layer to keep it unfocused) the actual 2D image thinks the tower is part of the street and keeps it clear? Should the boats off on the right be blurred too?

i think so. i should caveat that i don't have any actual experience with actual tilt-shift (i'd love to get one of them type lenses...), and am going mostly on my understanding of hte world around me. but the boats at right are probably good. the roof of hte white building on the right, not so much.

Meanwhile....

About a year ago I received a request from a Russian company - they wanted to use three of my photos of Bermuda on refrigerator magnets. I granted them permission along with a request of my own - that they send me the magnets when they were produced.

Look what arrived in today's mail.

It is a kick for me to see images that I took of my favorite place in the world commercially produced and hanging on my refrigerator.

Y'know, some of youse photog people should be concocting some stuff involving Mets gear/apparel and sending it in to the nightly photo of the day (or whatever they're calling it) that the Mets (and every other team I've seen this year too) are doing.
I suspect the judges might be particularly favorable towards pics involving red-headed twins.

i realized, like, right after the entry deadline had passed, that i should have entered him into the fair as well, as he's eligible in the 3-5y/o student category. last year, he took the best photo of me i've had taken in a while:

luckily, he'll still be eligible next year for the same category. maybe he'll have some more shots in his portfolio to choose from, too.

I love the days when my youngest is "bored", and wants to go out somewhere shooting with me. Fortunately, we have quite a few places in our hometown that are quite picturesque, and an easy way to burn off a few hours. Earlier this week, she wanted to go down to the Audubon Coastal Center, which has some great birding views along some marsh land, and also along the coast, as it sits near the mouth of the Housatonic River.

Re: Cheese 2014

my baby critter picture isn't as good as that one. i was really hoping that the autofocus would pick the right spots as i held the camera low as i crept up on the bunny i was trying to save.

the backstory, as reposted from facebook...

so i was out picking up pizza for dinner tonight. and as i'm driving out of the parking lot of the pizza place, i see something in the parking lot, right by the entrance from the roadway. at first i thought it was a lost brown leather work glove, or something similarly inanimate, that had just fallen there. i creep slowly by in my car, and see what it really is. a baby bunny. and, actually, there were two of them. so little. so very little.

they were not moving, just sitting there, happily and obliviously.

right almost exactly where any car pulling into the parking lot would place their tires.

so i backed up back into the lot, and parked my car. and of course, as i'm doing this, suddenly the lot gets busy. five cars either pull in or pull out, and i'm fearing the worst, but they all seem to notice the two baby bunnies, who are still not getting out of the way of the cars. all cars happily avoid smushing the bunnies.

shouldn't the baby bunnies' mommy bunny have told them of the dangers of automobiles by now? anyways...

i go over to the bunnies, hoping to shoo them away up onto the curb and into the shrubbery from whence they surely came.

baby bunny #1 notices me, and high-tails it for home. whew! baby bunny #2 is a little farther away. he sees me and gets scared. he backs away and starts hopping away, towards the road - a bad idea - but stops and turns around. does a little back and forth running along the curb, then tries to hop up the curb - almost makes it, but not quite. finally, he gets to a break in the curb near his home shrubbery, and hides in the bushes.

safe, at last.

my work, done.

i hop in the car and drive away. as i leave the parking lot, mommy bunny is sitting there, right by the break in the curb where the baby bunnies came back in. better late than never, i suppose.

this was the little guy who tried to hop up the curb. awww...

unfortunately, my focus was on the curb, and not on the bunny. but the bunny was safe, so, priorities, i guess...

I was walking Max along one of the back roads at Silver Sands when he picked up a scent and starting getting a little animated. He focused on this one spot, let out a little howl, and a deer popped its head up.

We actually just stood there staring at each other for a minute or two, and then a guy rode by on a bike, and the deer darted off...

Last night, after he was done retrieving bats, Derby was in the stands for a little while. The kids really love him, and I love the look on the face of this young Mets fan who was so happy to pet Derby last night.
