Overthecap.com is a great website with lots of football news, mostly centered around player movement and financials. they are doing a 15-20 page report on every team's cap situation and an offseason preview, they happened to start with the Jets (there is a pdf to download after you follow the link)

Re: J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! 2014 Thread

For a guy who is supposedly at or near the top of his position (a position that seems particularly valuable in this pass-happy era) Revis doesn't seem to be signing very good contracts.
The deal he inked with Tampa--the one he was able to force them into in order to land him--was for like $90 million dollars or so total but, in contrast to the trend of many top NFL FA deals, there was no up-front money therefore he got nothing more after being cut other than the one year's salary. Hell, the deal itself gave the Bucs incentive to cut him.
So given a second shot at it, not only is his new contract with the Patriots for less money than his last one (around a 20% cut) but it's a straight one-year deal with again no guarantees beyond the base salary.

Not that I'm about to start a charity drive for the guy or anything and maybe the consensus on him now it that he's no long the player he was a few years back, but FA opportunities for elite level players in their primes are so rare in the NFL that it seems odd for him to seemingly do through this two years in a row without getting even a tiny amount locked up beyond just the most immediate 12-month window.

Jets lost Austin Howard and added Breno Giacomini to take his place.
Jets re-signed Douzable who is a good backup for them.

The Revis thing makes me puke.

Decker is a good signing, hopefully they still draft a good WR (unless Ebron falls to them or all the good WRs are gone),

Cromartie was cut as well leaving the entire secondary as a big huge gap.

You need two quality WRs, or one plus an elite TE, to go far in the postseason. I don't think it's a coincidence that Sanchez' best season was the one where Holmes was healthy and Edwards was respectable enough to still draw defenders over to his side of the field.

Re: J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! 2014 Thread

As a rule, I don't want my team overreaching for need, especially in the 1st 2 rounds, and they should go for the best available guy, regardless of position. That being said, guys generally fall into strata, rather than a strict number order on a team's board, so within a particular strata they can prioritize certain positions. For the Jets, I'd hope it would be: TE, WR, OG, CB, S, in that order.

Alot of mocks have us taking Marqise Lee in the 1st, but that concerns me. He's explosive, yes, but small and gets hurt, and not as productive as his talent would indicate. He seems to me a boom/bust pick, which they should avoid. With the depth at WR in this draft, i'd hope they'd instead go for one of the top TEs first (Ebron, hopefully [though unlikely], with Amaro, Sefarian-Jenkins, Niklas and Fiedorowicz all likely to still be available, but Jets may consider them all strictly 2nd round players), then take best WR in the 2nd round -- i'm hoping for Brandin Cooks (though he'll probably go in the 1st round), or even a solid all-around guy like Jordan Matthews. If Cooks is still available in the beginning of the 2nd round, they should trade up for him. He's a blazing fast difference maker, like Lee, but more consistently productive and healthy (so far).

That being said, all i know about these guys is what i read, so obviously the teams and the touts all know more than me or anybody here. Still the team's philosophy towards the draft needs to be BEST AVAILABLE PLAYER, only prioritizing position within each particular strata of player. Talent wins; if you have a surplus at a position, you make a trade.

Agree wit everything you said except for the last thing. surplus for surplus trading doesnt happen in the NFL the way it does in MLB/NBA. generally trades are almost always about dumping a guy fd\or a lower draft pick than you used to take him.

i think we're better now than we were before, so i'm ok with the move, for however long it may work out. I have no confidence in Geno Smith (i didn't when they drafted him and i still don't), but i really don't think sitting behind Vick will do him much harm, developmentally speaking. Lots of great QBs started their careers playing either intermittently or sitting behind better QBs. With Vick's injury history, its still likely Smith will play some this year, even if he doesn't start the season as their QB.

As for the dog-fighting thing.... look, its horrible. But it's also a cultural thing; there are places in America where they hold animals' lives more cheaply than the do in the other parts of America, and this is part of their tradition. It's not an excuse, of course, and we can feel that he should have rose above his environment, but he didn't. And he paid for his involvement, and has been (by all accounts) a model citizen since. So, even as a dog lover, I don't think I can withhold my support for him at this point, if he's on my team and doing all he can to help the team win. People get second chances.

But that's me. I understand the mileage of others might vary on this point and i have no problem with that.

"The San-chize" signed with Eagles, so we've basically swapped our ex-starting QBs.

Meanwhile, the Eagles have an all-pro O-Guard, Mathis, they're looking to trade for a 3rd round pick because they don't want to pay him. We should consider that, as long as we're becoming Philly North. We have 3 4th-rounders and 4 6thR picks, so we could probably trade some of that excess to replace the 3rd rounder.

Jets added Jacoby Ford on a one year deal. Ford is a fast, but always injured, wide receiver. His biggest contributions have come as a kick-returner, a role that the NFL seems determined to entirely eliminate through rule changes.

Jets also add often-injured (are you sensing a pattern here?) cornerback Dimitri Patterson, another talented guy who can't stay on the field.

Theres no such thing as a bad 1-year deal, maybe one of these guys plays well?

Another injured guy with explosive speed; Camp fodder, i guess, to compete as a return guy.

When pressed, Pryor compares himself to Kam Chancellor; I think it's fair to say-- given that they passed on Dennard and Cooks-- that Idzik et. al. think similarly of him.

Keith Olbermann did a funny bit late last night about how #2 overall picks have out-performed #1 overalls (based on Pro-Bowl & HoF stats) over the seven-plus decades of NFL drafting.
And the thing is, that such a thing could and has turned out that way should come as a shock to no one, nor does it prove that the guys up there don't know what they're talking about. What it does show though is that the hundreds of hours they spend analyzing this stuff and the conviction with which they declare that Smith is better than Jones, etc., is largely nothing more than a wait-and-see toss-up being passed off as if an exact science.

Re: J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! 2014 Thread

The draftniks have given the Jets a pretty solid B/B+ consensus grade on this draft overall, but i have some reservations. I think we did well in the first 2 rounds, picking top guys at positions of need. But then i think we overdrafted a bunch of guys in the middle rounds, before finishing strongly.

In this draft, we needed help alot of places, but our biggest needs were (1) a fast outside WR who could start opposite Decker and stretch the field, so that Decker, Kerley and Johnson could make quick short plays in the slot and over the middle, and (2) a CB who could start opposite the disappointing Milliner (over the bust Kyle Wilson), who was strong enough to press WRs at the line, and re-route them, and provide man-coverage on the ever-biggening WRs in this league. We filled neither of these needs.

Instead, we got:

1/18: Calvin Pryor, S (Louisville) - They went for the SS over Dennard/CB and Cooks/WR, and some say it was a bit of a reach, but i like him. Safety was a need (not as much as WR and CB, but still a need), and Pryor was ranked by many as the top S in the draft, expected to go in the 2nd half of the 1st R, so i think it was both good value and a good fit. There is at least some question, however, whether this kind of hard hitter is being outlawed in the NFL, and whether Pryor has the ability to cover as well as hit. And I would've preferred Cooks, who was the exact type of WR we needed, or Dennard, the prototype press-cover2 CB we should have looked for, but i can't not like getting a guy like Pryor, who can knock muthafuckas out and change the tone of a game and will be our opening day starter. [B+]

2/49: Jace Amaro, TE (Texas Tech) - A great pick. Cumberland is, at best, a mediocre TE. Amaro is the "big play" slot receiver we didn't get in round 1, and is a value pick in the middle of Round 2, so good for us. But he's not going to block anybody or help in the running game, so he'll have to be used primarily in 2-TE sets, which limits other things Ryan can do. But i'm picking nits. [A]

3/80: Dexter McDougle, CB (Maryland) - At this point i said "WTF?" This guy was rated by EVERYBODY who does this sort of thing for a living (expect Idzik, i guess) as a 5th-7th round pick, and we took him in the 3rd. Even if he was the best CB on the board at the time (he wasn't; he wasn't even in the top 25), and even if he had been a healthy productive player (he hadn't been), he was still the wrong KIND of CB, ill-equipped to step in and start opposite Milliner in game 1. He's a smallish quick CB, physical and a good tackler, but unable to press WRs at the line, giving up a lot of catches in front of him to protect against the deep ball (and that's assuming he stays healthier than he did in college). And at that point in round 3, there were literally 2 dozen other CBs higher ranked than (or equivalent to) McDougle. Not that there were any blue chippers still available at that point (they were all gone by then), but then why not take an impact WR like Montcrief, still sitting there on the board and still a glaring need as a #2 wideout, and wait until R4 to choose from among the cluster of similarly ranked CBs available with one of our three 4th-R picks? Even if Rex loved McDougle, there was no reason to think they couldn't have gotten him one round later, and even if not, then take Gaines, McGill, Aikens, Desir, or Breeland or the best available at that point. I don't think this guy can even beat out Wilson, and that's a damning thing to say about anybody. He may well be this year's Stephen Hill... a talented bust we hold onto too long because we overvalued him. [D]

4/104: Jalen Saunders, WR/PR (Oklahoma) - We overdrafted again here. This tiny mite won't be able to play on the outside opposite Decker; he'll get pushed out of every play. He could be an effective slot receiver at some point (If Smith or Vick can even find him), but with Kerley and now Amaro, plus RB Johnson coming out of the backfield, that's not a glaring need. He may end up a good punt returner, and that's certainly useful, but at this point, there were still WRs available who could line up and do exactly what we needed. Bruce Ellington went 2 slots later and Robert Herron a few rounds after that, both of whom have more speed and at least have the strength to be a #2 WR and not just special teams guys. [C-]

4/115: Shaq Evans, WR (UCLA) - A solid, productive possession receiver, but not great speed or a high ceiling, and Martavis Bryant was just sitting there (before going 3 picks later to Pitt). And CBs McGill, Desir and Aikens were still there, too, making the McDougle pick in R3 even worse. [C+]

4c/137: Dakota Dozier, T/G (Furman) - With the third of our 4th-R picks, we got solid value adding offensive line depth, picking up a small school LT who could step in at G for either Colon or Winters, should the need arise. Good call here (and a great name!), but we should have packaged some of these extra 4th and 6th R picks to move up and get either a starting-caliber CB or WR at some point, instead of settling for McDougle and Saunders. [B+]

5/154: Jeremiah George, ILB (Iowa State) - a slow and undersized LB, mostly here for special teams depth. There were some OLBs with higher ceilings still available, plus a promising DB like Aaron Exum, guard Jon Halapio, WR Matt Hazel, and QB David Fales (considered by many to be the best "late sleeper" QB pick in the draft), but Special Teams needs bodies, i guess. [C-]

6/195: Brandon Dixon, CB (NW Missouri State) - This guy could just as easily been an undrafted FA, but he's a physical CB who can contribute on ST, so Ok for a 6th R pick [C+]

6c/209: Quincy Enunwa, WR (Nebraska) - A big, strong receiver who could develop on the practice squad, which is all you can hope for at this point in the draft [C+]

6c/210: IK Enemkpali, DE/OLB (Louisiana Tech) - Not much talent here; he's strong, tough, hard-worker, but a slow and undersized pass-rushing end... why him over Sam? or anybody else? [C]

6c/213: Tajh Boyd, QB (Clemson) - A lot of talent for a 6th R QB (he can run and make all the throws), but totally raw and unfamiliar with a pros system. He'll compete with Simms for 3rd-string QB slot and, as "Rex's guy", will likely win. But they could have had Fales (a better prospect) in the 5th, instead of George. [B]

7/233: Trevor Reilly, OLB (Utah) - A 26-year old man against college boys, this pass rusher with a bad knee could actually help right away, which is great value in the 7th R [B+]

We were a thin team coming into the draft, so we needed a lot of new blood, but 12 picks? Some should have been used to improve our 3rd and 4th round positions to get the CB and WR we still needed at that point... and still need now. Instead, we brought in practice squad filler. Overall, there seems to have been an intentional emphasis on drafting for leadership (some of these guys were team captains), toughness and physicality over pure talent, which is fine if it works and sucks if it doesn't.

If I grade this draft based on our top 2 picks alone, i'd give it a "B+/A-". But overall, the lack of moving around to upgrade the mid-round picks before taking some interesting talent later on (and good character guys throughout [except the talented but felonious Amaro]), makes this more of a "C+/B-" grade. Certainly good enough, and there are UDFAs still to be brought in, but I was left scratching my head at times, particularly with McDougle (3rdR) and Saunders (4th), which i think were out-and-out blunders, and Evans, George, Dixon and Enemkpali, who i think are just filler picks with limited upsides. But i don't do this for a living; they do. And i hope they hit it out of the park.

46 years and counting...

That was basically what the normally boastful Rex said too. I thought Geno looked good except for the fumble. Even the INT didn't bother me too much, Geno thought he could fit it in there and Woodson had to dive infront of Decker to make the play, these things happen and were not as bad as last year's INTs

The defense looked fucking awesome. they allowed 1 drive at the end and a score when the offense turned it over very deep in Jets territory. Oakland could not run the ball AT ALL until the Jets were up 2 scores late and didn't care about the run and gave up a 10+ yarder. Od course, this was a rookie QB and Wall still looks like shit out there. I'm concerned about the Murderers Row of QBs the Jets face next 6 games (Rodgers, Stafford, Cutler, Manning, Rivers, Brady are the next 6 games)

For what it's worth...

Mike Pereira ?@MikePereira
If you get a last second timeout request (like in jets game), you grant it. You don't have time to turn around and see who is calling it.

Also saw Pereira on video saying that with a snap imminent, the official will grant the timeout, even if they do not know who is calling it. Though a close look at the video it appears inconclusive that the timeout came before the snap.

if they were THAT bad, i'd actually be ok with that. but they're not bad enough to come in last, or really even the bottom 1/3. They'll end up somewhere between 6-10 and 9-7, without a shot at the top pick, and without much improvement. They're spinning their wheels in the quagmire of mediocrity, which is the worst possible place to be.

I think it's a Zeitgeist thing at this point. (Remember their's a "Draft Day" move coming out that's basically NFL propaganda I assume) The draft has been trumped up as an 'event' so much that all the machinations leading up to it are now fair game. Re: J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! 2014 Thread

Jalen saunders was cut today. So here's the tote board on this year's draft:

* Pryor has been ok so far, but not great. And he got hurt this week, injuring his thigh. He's been up and down, but may yet end up an impact player. Meanwhile Brandin Cooks is doing pretty well, and is the type of WR we still lack.

* They've been slow to intergrate Amaro into the offense, but his role is increasing. He may well be worth the pick.

x - So the guy who was hurt in college is out for the year in NY. Shocker, right? Same deal with Milliner. CB with significant injury history still has injuries that inhibit his effectiveness. Meanwhile, we didn't draft or sign a FA CB worth a shit, and QBs are tearing us a new one week after week.

x - We overdrafted huge here, and after he muffed a PR, Saunders got benched and now he's cut. So of the 3 WRs we drafted (our biggest need coming into the season), one got cut, one is on IR for the season, and the 3rd is on the practice squad. yikes.

x - IR for the year; he wasn't making an impact in pre-season anyway, and may well have gotten cut or put on practice squad, if not for the injury.

* - Hasn't played a snap, but he's still on the roster, at least.

x - cut, signed on Practice squad, then signed by Jacksonville

6/195: Brandon Dixon, CB (NW Missouri State) - This guy could just as easily been an undrafted FA, but he's a physical CB who can contribute on ST, so Ok for a 6th R pick [C+]

x - cut, then signed by Tampa.

6c/209: Quincy Enunwa, WR (Nebraska) - A big, strong receiver who could develop on the practice squad, which is all you can hope for at this point in the draft [C+]

* signed to practice squad

6c/210: IK Enemkpali, DE/OLB (Louisiana Tech) - Not much talent here; he's strong, tough, hard-worker, but a slow and undersized pass-rushing end... why him over Sam? or anybody else? [C]

* Hurt, but still here

x - sucked so bad, he couldn't even get an NFL practice squad job

7/233: Trevor Reilly, OLB (Utah) - A 26-year old man against college boys, this pass rusher with a bad knee could actually help right away, which is great value in the 7th R [B+]

* still on roster; has even played a little.

So 8 of 12 picks are still on the roster, with 2 of them on IR, 1 on practice squad, 1 inactive, 1 active but hurt so far this year, and only 3 having played any snaps this year (pryor, Amaro and Reilly).

The Jets have drafted pretty poorly overall in the Rex Ryan era. They've probably been a little above average in yhe 1st round (the Wilkerson and Richardson picks were gold) but have missed horribly on high round picks like vlad ducasse and stephen hill. The 2009 and 2010 drafta where they claimed to trade quantity of pivks for quality were horrendous.

In light of yesterday's Little-Big-Horn style massacre, i make this statement for the record: From the Meadowlands, to where the sun now stands, I will forgive Rex no more forever.

The continuing mistakes, mental and physical, with ever-growing numbers of penalties and turnovers, combined with the panic move at half-time throwing an unready Vick to the wolves, as well as the "movie-gate" missed meeting situation, leads me to the conclusion that Rex has lost the control and respect of these players. Time for him to go.

They have enough talent, at least on D, not to look that bad against anybody. On O, they complain about the "lack of weapons" but then only target Amaro (their only potential big play weapon) 3 times, while throwing to Salas (SALAS!) 7 times (he caught 2). Then they gave the ball to Ivory, who had a 5yd/carry average in the game (and 5.4yd avg for the season), only 9 times, yet still keep forcing the ball to C.J.no.K. despite the fact that all evidence indicates he's completely done.

There is no discipline, no accountability, no plan. Sure, Rex has been set up to fail by Idzik, who kept his wallet in his pocket this off-season, leaving Ryan (thus undermanned at cornerback) to flounder and giving Idzik the excuse to bring in his own guy, despite Woody's obvious affection for Rex. But that's a fight for another day. Idzik's plan has worked. Rex is lost, and not even Vick could save him. We're looking down the barrel at 1-6, with Denver and NE coming up, and that will officially draw the curtain on the Ryan Regime.

I've always liked Rex (and i hate nearly everything Idzik has done, other than Richardson), but its too late to save him or the season.

They do this to me every fucking year. It's amazing. I long ago learned my lesson with the Mets and Knicks, always expecting disaster and being pleasantly surprised when they are a degree better than that. But for some reason, I keep thinking about the Jets that "this is the year!" And its always the same thing... the SAME. OLD. JETS.

Geno Smith missed meeting Saturday, Jets say it was 'honest mistake'
By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer
October 6, 2014 9:13 am ET

As bad as Geno Smith was on the field on Sunday -- he got benched after halftime following a first half vs. the Chargers in which he completed 4 of 12 passes for 27 yards and one interception -- his previous seven days might have been even worse.

First, the Jets quarterback cursed out a fan after New York lost to the Lions in Week 4, and on Saturday, the day before the Jets were dominated 31-0 by San Diego, he missed a team meeting, apparently upsetting some members of the organization, according to the NY Daily News.

Early Monday morning, the team responded, confirming that Smith had missed team meeting on Saturday but calling it an "honest mistake."

Wrote the Daily News: "According to the [Jets] spokesman, the quarterback 'got the times confused' and arrived 5-10 minutes after the meetings ended. He covered the details of the meetings with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and quarterbacks coach David Lee. This was the first time that Smith had missed a meeting, according to the team."

Not a huge deal, right? Especially since Jets coach Rex Ryan said after the Chargers game that he planned to start Smith next week vs. the Broncos (of course, it's also not a great thing when the starting quarterback misses a team meeting).

But Smith reportedly got his time zones mixed up, which is why he missed the meeting in the first place. And there's this.

“It was definitely a pathetic showing on my part,” Smith said while talking about the Chargers game. “I didn't help out at any point of the game…. So what I'm going to do is look myself in the mirror.”

And while Michael Vick replaced Smith in the third quarter, the backup quarterback wasn't much better, completing 8 of 19 passes for 47 yards. If fans thought Vick could be the team's savior, they were quickly reminded that he seems to be well past his prime and incapable of making better a woeful Jets offense that has many other problems besides who's taking the snap.

"It was a complete ass-whupping and it was me that was getting my ass kicked,” Ryan said. "... We could've had Joe Namath it wouldn't have been any different."

It's unknown, though, whether Namath would have made the team meeting Saturday.

I just can't take the local Jets analysis--- even the breaking news, I'd rather have delivered and filtered through national sources, for a minimal soupcon of perspective. All the local stuff is like the worst Met commentary-- especially the radio, and certainly including the SNY/Daily News shoutfests-- but bigger, louder, and dumber.

Rex may not be the coach for this team, but, yeah, he's certainly been set up for failure by Idzik (who will get another year or two at least, and as such will rise or fall, ultimately-- and almost definitely fall-- on Geno's arm).

Re: J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! 2014 Thread

i think what Ashie means is that Geno wasn't a big 1st round pick; he was a 2nd, which i guess is more disposable, in his view. But while it's true that the Jets don't have the kind of long-term big $ commitment in Geno that big 1st round QBs used to get, the fact is most rookies don't get those kind of deals anymore. And its not like they drafted Bridgewater or some of the other QBs available for the Jets in the 1st Round this year, so they're going with Geno, at least for now. But we'll see if a real QB prospect is available to them next year when they draft near the top. I'm betting Idzik goes for one if such is available. He won't go down with Geno, if he can help it.

Getting drafted as a "franchise" quarterback does not grant the player time to develop and mature as it once did. Its' a passing league, get it dun now.

Ask Blaine Gabbert, Jake Locker, Christian Ponder and possibly even Ryan Tannehill already.

When they don't perform out of the box you just get a new one.

Lousy, and apparently quite a knucklehead, even since the combine.

Smith goes to his NFL interviews with sweats, a posse and answers questions between cell calls.

IMHO He was selected by the Jets as a possible high ceiling guy without spending a higher pick or more money.

The Raiders drafted Derek Carr from Fresno State in the first round this season. When the Raiders lose enough and fairly or unfairly tire of Carr they can have have Geno Smith, all you want!

Looking for the Jets to spend their #1 on RB Todd Gurley GA or QB Jake Mariotta ORE.

Which of these quarterbacks is acting like he wants the ball?
“I learned a lesson last week: Always stay ready, always be prepared,” Vick said, per the Star-Ledger. “That left a bitter taste in my mouth, that I wasn’t able to go out and put points on the board or even help this team in any fashion. This week has been a different work week for me. I think throughout the rest of the year, it’s going to be totally different for me, as far as my preparation.”
Read that quote again. It came from a 14-year veteran. Stunning.
If that is uttered from the mouth of a first- or second-year backup, you know what? You write it off to youngster naivité; you chalk it up as a tough lesson learned.

Isn't it also the job of the quarterbacks coach to make
sure stuff like this doesn't happen? All the coaches? Geno
is fair game because the team sucks and Vick certainly isn't

yeah its on them too, but as a 14-year veteran who has started and even starred in this league it is mainly on YOU to prepare, the coaches shouldn't need to babysit you like some rookie.

On a different note, I see that Geno is now blaming the media... that's usually the beginning of the end for a player in this city. I only wish he'd take Idzik with him. His FA signings have sucked, his draft-picks have been disappointing, and despite sitting on $20m in cap space, we still have no professional starting CBs on the roster. Now whether he did this out of incompetence or because he's trying to undermine the coach (so he can bring in his own guy with the owner's blessing) doesn't really matter. He should be gone and he should take Geno with him.

From that SportsDirect thing:

1. Brady is 6-0 all-time on Thursday and has thrown at least two touchdowns passes in four of his six Thursday starts.
2. The Jets have allowed points on all 18 opponent drives into the red zone, giving up 13 TDs and five field goals.
3. Brady has 11 career games with at least 350 passing yards and four TD passes, third-most in history behind Drew Brees (15) and Peyton Manning (13).

Not that it makes the Jets any less likely to get smushed by the Pats tonight, but this media trend toward categorizing football games by the night of the week played and citing such records and stats as if reliable predictive factors is really dopey.
ABC got the ball rolling on this during the early years of MNF but that was essentially a marketing ploy designed to create the idea that games on Monday night were substantially different from any other game being played. Now it's just copycat stupidity.

masochist that i am, i started to watch the game last night. So Brady throws like a 1000-yd touchdown on the 3rd play from scrimmage.
I then turned off the TV and went on with my life. That they kept it close only to lose it in the end was not unexpected, nor particularly disappointing.

But instead the Jets will now play Vick, when it no longer matters, and end up 3-13 or 4-12, missing out on whatever top QB prospect is expected to go 1st overall. I agree with this one hundred percent. No -- a million percent. A gazillion percent.

But weren't you the one who wrote long and passionate anti-tanking posts in the wake of Jose Reyes taking himself out of the game after the first inning on his last day as a Met to secure the batting title?

Vic Sage
Oct 27 2014 03:32 PM
Re: J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! 2014 Thread

i don't remember writing any anti-tanking anything.

What Reyes did that year wasn't tanking... it was trying to back into an accomplishment he should earn on the field by sitting on his ass. Sure, he owes it to the fans to play every inning of every game as if it were his last. But his playing or sitting wasn't going to affect the long-term health of the franchise, like playing yourself out of a #1 pick does in football and basketball. Taking himself out of that game was purely about him achieving (or, rather, choosing not to fail to achieve) some personal milestone that was meaningless to the team's success. It was cowardly, gutless, selfish bullshit.

What that has to do with the Jets i have no idea.

As for the aforementioned football club, they should play kids and marginal guys to see what they have, and preserve the health of vets they'll need next year. Lets see Chris Simms, behind Dozier, Freeman, Oboushi and Ijalana, with Sudfeld on the end, throwing to Harvin, Hakim, Powell and Salas. Lets see Douzable and TJ Barnes on the D line, in front of Edds, Reilly and Enemkpali, with Josh Thomas and Philip Adams lining up at CB, and Cal Pryor moved inside to FS. And if we don't win any more games, then we don't, but we'll learn something about our roster and be in position to draft better next year. Even if i were a fan that actually bought tix to games, i'd still be happier to see them figure stuff out with prospects and maybes, while saving Mangold, Ferguson, Decker, Richardson and Wilkerson for next year.

football is the one sport in which it makes the most sense to tank. (well, i think it's hte one sport - i don't know much about hockey and soccer.)

basketball, thanks to the lottery system, doesn't guarantee the worst team the best player, although the lebron jameses and kevin durants can impact their team's fortunes almost immediately.

in baseball, the worst team is guaranteed the shot and who they deem the best player, but that player does not impact the team immediately, but there's rarely an obvious generational player like mike trout who pans out famously right off hte bat.

in football, however, if you can be the worst team in hte right year, you can get an andrew luck, who can play immediately, and affect your team's fortunes for the next decade (or more). there's some risk of bust, obviously, but it's almost certainly worht the risk if hte right player is there.

....

that press conference was lunacy. i listened to much of it, and all i got from it was, that everyone on the jets payroll, from the coach to the players to the medical staff to the parking lot attendants, is doing a fantastic, excellent job, to the best of their abilities, and to the highest level imagineable. except for idzik himself, whose job performance is reflected dierectly in the record. except that he didn't make any actual mistakes and there's nothing he can point to that he actually did wrong.

how he can finish the press conference still in hte employ of hte jets is beyond me.

And it's not like Trout was obvious at the time.
Yeah he was a 1st round pick but was also passed over 24 times (including once by the Angels themselves) before being selected. As of now, 5-1/2 years after that draft, eight (1/3) of the guys selected ahead of him have yet to see a day in the majors.

The other thing about tanking in the NFL is that, with the entry level salaries essentially rigged to the point where there's no room for the player to negotiate, it's not like the higher draft pick is going to cost you all that much more than a lesser choice. The rules have taken most of the risk out of it for the teams; if the player out-performs his expectations then the team has him locked into a particular rate for the first 3-4 years, and if he under-performs then the team can cut him and not owe the remainder of the deal.

Re: J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! 2014 Thread

Nah. Football is much harder to turnaround with one pick. A football team consists of 22 regulars (offense and defense and not counting special teams). One player is only 4.5% of the people on the field. A QB might make more difference than other positions, but a QB is not going to turn the team around if his offensive line sucks and he has no decent receivers, and if the defense is full of holes. It's a good start, but not enough. If the Jets picked the top QB in the draft next year, they still would have so many problems that it wouldn't make a difference.

In basketball, BTW, each player is 20% of the starting five. That can make a great deal of difference; if you pick another starter in the second round, your team can do a quick turnaround.

Baseball and hockey players don't go to the majors immediately, so the draft is always a long-term thing.

i'm against tanking in baseball, because the draft is such a crap shoot, and takes a long time to determine its success. In football and basketball, draft picks make an immediate impact and can turn a franchise around more quickly. While i don't advocate teams lose ON PURPOSE, i do think they should have other, more long-term, goals in mind, once a season is lost. They should play the guys they're trying to figure out and see if they can play, rather than vets whose value is known.

The Jets were in "win now" mode when the season started. That was when it made sense to play Vick, not Geno. Now, with the season lost, they're sitting Geno and going to Vick... why? What is another win or 2 going to do for them, except hurt their draft position? Now is the time you play the untested guys... Simms, whoever, and try to figure some stuff out before going into next year's draft. But these are the J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS so they do everything bass-ackwards.

basketball is the easiest to turn around in one pick, for the most part, but thanks to the lottery, you're not rewarded for fully tanking your season the way you are in football. there's risk that you'll have the worst season, need the best player, but get hte 4th pick. in football, the worst team gets the first pick. some years, that's a slam dunk immediate franchise rescue. other years it's jamarcus russell...

in basketball, i would guess that it's much more likely than hte other major sports, for the best player in the draft to be drafted with teh first pick, but i haven't done a statistical analysis to attest to the fact. but again, tanking hte season to get that pick doesn't work so well all the time.

The NFL already does a double east coast/west coast set of Monday night games in the first week of the season, and there's no doubt that they (along with some fans) would like to get more games into 'stand alone' time slots rather than in competition with other games. But if they were going to do this on a weekly basis then they'd want them to not overlap which pushes game 1 into a slot too early for west coast viewers and game 2 too late for the east - and if the result isn't going to be more eyeballs on TV sets then it's unlikely they'd go to it on a full-time basis.

Another pain where the ulcers grow,
Another Monday with another foe.

For weeks, they're getting worse and worse,
More weeks, and its just like they are cursed,
This week, will they show any fight?
So its off to Miami to play Monday Night!

The pre-game show is about to start,
But I'll just clip my nails and let out a fart,
It's show time folks... just say it ain't so
Cuz its another Monday and we really blow.

after another heart-breaker the Jets are one of FIVE teams sitting at 2-11.

The Raiders (Carr), Titans (Mettenberger?), Jaguars (Bortles), and Bucaneers (McKown/Glennon) could all pick ahead of us and the REdskins (RGIII/Cousins) have a shot still at 3-10.

How many of these teams want a QB? I'd think any of them could fall in love with a guy and jettison what they have, but none are as desperate as the J-E-T-S.

Right now, the Jets are apparently sitting at No. 4, due to the strength-of-schedule tiebreak (Jets at .549), with the Buccaneers, Titans, and Jaguars sitting in front of them in the 1-3 slots, respectively.

Even if that trade would be destined to ultimately benefit the Jets, it's the kind of trade most fans would dislike, I would think.

No coach is worth a 1st round pick.

Of the teams ahead of us, Jacksonville and Oakland just took 1st round QBs last year, and they are still evaluating. I doubt they'd go that way again so soon. Mettenberger? a lower pick, injured, untested. They might take a shot at Mariotta. But the most likely team is TB, in desperate need of a QB, and likely to draft 1 or 2. Best bet for the Jets is, if they like the ocal guy Jameis Winston, to trade up with them so they can get their guy plus extra picks and we can get Mariotta.

First step: lose to Tennessee next week. Go Titans!

New England won because Mo Lewis planted Bledsoe on his ass and ended his time in Foxboro. If that hit doesnt happen Brady never plays, washes out of the league a few years later like so many other backups, and takes Belichick with him.

Even when they win, they lose (wrt draft position).
But they are athletes with pride, if nothing else. They play to win.
And they should.
And if I were in a position to do it, I'd ban any writer from the locker room whose column tomorrow says they should have not played to win, because they don't understand athletes.

this. so this.

They finally played a team even stupider and more incompetent than themselves. Hard to believe there was such a team out there somewhere, but there you go.

I was screaming during that last play, when Landry finally pushed the ball carrier out at the 5-yrd line with no time left on the clock. The Jets secondary has sucked all year (no fault of theirs; most of them shouldn't be starting players in the NFL), but NOW they make a play?

Re: J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! 2014 Thread

Rex called out us Jets fans during post-game interview, saying anybody who was rooting for them to lose wasn't a "real Jets fan".

Look, i totally get where he was coming from. Its not in a coach or player's nature to ever see the good in a loss. They are such competitive people that they became professional athletes, a position of such rarified air that those who are not obsessively driven to win are weeded out long before they get to the NFL. They want to and expect to win every time they take the field, and i wouldn't have it any other way. And Rex knows he's gone... the "long term" has no meaning for him, if it ever did. He wants wins to show his team didn't quit, thus justifying future employment.

But fans have a long view. Long after Rex has retired to a cushy job on TV, and long after Geno Smith tells his grandkids that, yes, i once played in the NFL, I as a Jets fan will still be rooting for the laundry, hoping that THIS will be the year. "wait til next year," Dodger fans would say, with resentful bitterness hiding a core of optimism. And over the years, we learn that some years you're in it, and some years you're not, so the best thing we can hope for is that the team at least is heading in the right direction. It turns "wait til next year," from a dour lament into a badge of honor. And to head in the right direction, sometimes you have to take a step back to take 2 steps forward.

If players and coaches are focused on winning the battle, then its a GM's job to win the war. And Idzik has recruited a moron army to do so, with him as the head moron. So fans have to hope to simply survive the war, and hope the next general has a better plan for the next war. Because, just like in life, there is always another war to win.

So I'm not mad at Rex for dissing me... I get it. But he'll be gone next year, and I'll still be here, still thinking every autumn that "THIS will be the year!" He'll be exchanging jokes with Chris Berman telling us why the Jets still suck, or off coaching another team to try and beat the Jets, and I'm still stuck in the swamp clinging to my green and white buoy, hoping for a great man to come along and save me. Cuz Rex, you weren't the one.

Q: The Jets are so incompetent that we cannot even lose games when we need to. Re: J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! 2014 Thread

The Rex-Watch probably won't last long, he'll be gone tomorrow. I hope they fire Idzik first and at least give the new GM the option of Rex.

As for players, the Jets needs have only increased since last offseason-

Quarterback is Still the #1 need, but there is nobody out there in free agency. Geno Smith muddied the water today with a performance that has to give ammunition to his supporters in the organization, but if Idzik and his team are shown the door he may have no supporters left. He'll be back next year thanks to an affordable contract at least as the backup and likely with a chance to win the job in camp unless the Jets go out and go crazy trading for a Jay Cutler or something. Michael Vick will move on and Simms can have the #3 job again.

at Runningback Chris Ivory is a beast, he runs hard, bowls people over and is just plain awesome. His new platoon partner will likely be someone else other than Chris Johnson. Powell should be back and I love Connor at fullback. Given the Jets needs, I doubt they take a runningback in the first 3 rounds or invest in an expensive one via trade/free agency.

for the Wide Receivers I like Decker enough and Kerley is what he is, worth having on the roster if he doesnt get more expensive. Percy Harvin was a failed experiment. the Jets could look here early on draft day especially if the big QBs arent available to them.

the offensive line has degraded significantly since the days of Thomas and Tomlinson running the ground-and-pound and Mark Sanchex mostly only ending up on his ass when it was his own fault. They may still need a permanent solution at RT and need to get younger and better at Guard. Colon is wayyyyy past his prime and his name has become synonymous with "holding"

They need help in the return game. Kerley is "Mr Fair Catch" on punts and everyone else is an adventure trying to hold onto the ball. Quigley is fine. I think I'm ready to say goodbye to Folk if someone better is available.

On the defensive side, Wilkerson & Richardson are MVP type players with Harrison also an excellent player up front. Douzable and Ellis are better than everyone elses backup/rotation guys and I was pretty happy with Couples when someone was hurt or when they used him in a 4-man front.

at Linebacker, Coples showed he really belongs at 4-3 Defensive End. Davis stepped up with what I felt was a good season. they are getting too old here and its probably time to show Pace and part-timer Babin the door. Harris is a free agent and giving money to an aging middle linebacker would be crazy.

at safety, some kind of rotation of Landry, Jarrett, Allen (he looks good when playing his actual position) and Pryor wont make any probowls but they'll be good enough to get the job done. Pryor looked lost alot on his rookie year when asked to play deep coverage but looked good in the role he is comfortable with- hitting people. whether an "in the box safety" is still a valuable comodity in this pass-happy league is another question.

cornerback? oy. hopefully Milliner comes back healthy as he was starting to look ok. they'll get the 3rd rounder McDougle who never made the field back too in what will essetially become a do-over rookie year. Marcus Williams came on late in the year and looked like he belongs on an NFL roster (somewhere on the bench, but still an improvement for the Jets). Maybe they'll finally cur bait with disappointing former 1st rounder Kyle Wilson?

I'd rank the needs as follows, but you can't just go into the draft and take a guy because he fills a need, the talent needs to be there: Quarterback, Cornerback, Wide Receiver, Outside Linebacker (pass rusher but a guy who can drop in coverage at least a little bit, not another guy who belongs at 4-3 DE), Tackle/Guard. they'll probably need a starter at middle linebacker as well if Harris is allowed to walk.

Re: J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! 2014 Thread

That was a good analysis of the team's needs.
But other than some defensive front seven players and a still possible quarterback, Idzik wiffed on a high percentage of his draft picks. Some selections over the past two years made little or no contribution to the team. He had slightly better luck drafting players than Mickey Rooney had picking wives.

The Jets made a bunch of mistakes the last few years, culminated by the Ryan firing today. Rex Ryan was never the problem. He never had a good quarterback, he never even had a decent quarterback. John Idzik was one of the worst GMs ever and pretty much tanked this season.

Unlike the Bucaneers, the Jets didnt pull their starters and lose on purpose for the #1 pick (seriously, the NFL should punish Tampa for what happened Sunday), the GM might have been trying to lose but the players played hard for Ryan until the very end.

I'm not thrilled with the idea that they're starting to plan coach interviews before a GM is in place. And I really don't like that Kubiak and Tom Cable are two of the coaching names I've seen pop up.

I'm liking the thought of Mike Maccagnan, the college scouting guy from the Texans who is on their shortlist for GMs. But that's almost totally based on this, where I think he comes off as pretty knowledgeable...[url]http://www.houstontexans.com/news/a...13-draft/16e0560b-38af-4470-bfff-c32515415954

I'd be interested in interviewing Darrell Bevell, though a buddy of mine out in Seattle says he has his detractors out there among the fan base. I also would't turn my back on Josh McDaniels; yes, he got fired in Denver and yes, he has Belichick stench on him (and the Belichick coaching tree hasn't set the world on fire); but he did start a season 6-0 with Kyle Orton as his QB, and he is a bit more mature now. Definitely worth an interview.

Another guy who won't come back here, but in the right spot (with a solid front office) I think could resurrect his career, is Eric Mangini. Guy is still young, and has been on the 49ers staff the last couple years. As long as he doesn't have the dual roles of GM and coach, and as long as he lightens up a bit, he's got a great football mind.

now that Harbaugh is off the table, i can't think of a single coaching candidate to whom the Jets should give total control over player personnel. Therefore, they're going to need a quality GM. And they're not going to GET a quality GM if they already have a coach in place.
