Happy Polar Vortex!!

Frayed Knot

Enjoy the cold.
From what I've been able to determine, this condition is due to something commonly known as 'winter' and it'll continue to be cold until it no longer is.

More details as they become available.

We are now joined by Centerfield, reporting live from downtown with more details on this developing story.

Thank you FK. I'm here on the corner of First and Main, and as you can see, the cold has spread to downtown as well. If you look behind me, you'll see that there are a number of things that are very cold. That utility pole, is certainly cold, as is the street light, over here to my right, if you can just pan over for a second. And if you look all around, you will see this white stuff known as snow, which is also very cold. Earlier, I spoke to locals about this cold.

Cut to pre-recorded clips of residents talking about the cold. Elderly black woman talks about another time when it was also cold. Well-dressed man on his way to work says he's just going about his day despite the cold. Working class guy blames the cold on the new mayor.

Cut back to CF, who, not knowing he is back on camera, gazes awkwardly into nothing, suddenly realizes he's back on, and continues report.

And Frayed, to compound matters, later tonight, we are supposed to experience periods of darkness that will increase as we get later into the night, but early reports are that the darkness will start to dissipate by tomorrow morning. One more note, city officials have asked that you not go outside unless it is absolutely necessary. By being outside, you are actually giving city workers more work, and can potentially put lives in danger. So, I repeat, do not go outside unless absolutely necessary.

From First and Main, Centerfield, CPF News.

CF's piece so perfectly captures the type of stuff that passes for reporting these days.

Gotta like the NY Post headline of: “IN 10 MINUTES YOU COULD BE DEAD
Turns out that they were quoting the Indianapolis Mayor (where it hit 13-below) although they left off the "without the proper clothes” ending of his statement.
But I suppose it beats their lead headline about former Guv Spitzer caught on camera sucking the toes of his latest babe in a hot tub.

That is correct smg. It is expected that the darkest periods will be just before dawn, but of course, there may be other very dark periods as well. Darkness is very unpredictable. However, we can say for certain that it will be darker before dawn, as compared to after dawn.

Well, 10 years ago, maybe 15, we had a January of frigid temperatures like this. I remember specifically because it was sorta pre online ticket sales and I spent 6 hours in Shea Stadium's parking lot and briefly in the not much warmer ground level inside the doors. I think this was also the year Buffalo got 8 feet of snow while I was gone and it all melted by Spring semester.

If a part of the polar vortex gets pulled south, that means that warmer air is getting pushed north somewhere. I can remember this time of year in 1994, when the highs in New York were in single digits, parts of Siberia were experiencing temperatures in the 60s.

Frayed Knot

Re: Happy Polar Vortex!!

Listening to some newscasts last night, their guy on the street was forced to admit that, even though it were still quite cold, the wind wasn't quite as bad as expected in some areas and therefore the 'wind-chill factor' expectations weren't nearly reached. At one point they admitted that the wind had diminished to just about nothing at that moment making the air temp and WC-temp essentially even. At which point they sent it back to the studio weather guy who went right back to talking about the wind-chill factors.

It's like these geeks get so heavily invested in telling you how bad it's going to be that it becomes a measure of pride to them (our temps/raninfall/snowfalls are even worse than they are at that other station) to the point where they're reluctant to back off when things turn out to be not quite as spectacular as they predicted. In this case merely telling you that the temps fell to single digits now seems wimpy to them because their lead-ups for the previous two days showed numbers on their screens in the range of negative-20 or so.
'So the wind-chill is no longer a factor ... but here are the temps it would feel like if you were outside now had the conditions we predicted to happen actually were going on, even though they're not'.

The geeks at the Weather Channel have apparently named this storm 'Janus. Not sure if it's because we're in the midst of January, or because they see this storm as somehow two-faced. Or maybe it's that the gulf moisture associated with it came up from the vicinity of Port Arthur, Texas; I'm still investigating.

Weather is always good for news:

1) It takes no actual investigation. We all know what's going on, and the government has publicly available meteorology reports to tell us what tomorrow might or might not be like.

2) Everybody talks about it.

3) Everybody experiences it, so they feel like it's a story that involves us --- like when you buy a paper the day after a fire in your neighborhood. Weather happens in everybody's neighborhood.

4) It tells you nothing.

Office closing. I'm-a going home.

At my age snow can be a pain in the ass. But I don't mind the snow as bad as the cold. When it snows at around 32 degrees, light wind if any, it's really not too cold and it is beautiful outside. But these next few days coming up, when its gonna be like 5 to 15 degrees, that's what I hate. I think anything below 25 I become a real wimp.

We got 2'" of snow last Tuesday evening which was a mild annoyance and forced our office to operate on a 2 hour delay. Most patients (roughly 65%) either called to cancel their appointment or simply failed to show up.

Last night and early this morning we received 5" of snow. Not much reason for our office to open this morning. Virtually everything is shut down for the day (schools, courts, local government buildings, the malls) as southerners don't handle snow very well. The sun, our primary snow removal equipment, isn't expected to be of much help until late tomorrow afternoon.

My daughter's school district waited until 5:40(!!!!) to finally call off school; honestly I was on my way in to the bathroom to get ready to go babysit. I think they were trying for the suspense award.

Gonna go shovel soon but it's a delicate process since it's still sleeting. Do I get it over with or wait? Don't want ice on the car and the snow cover helps to prevent that...

Our district cancelled at around the same time. I told MK to shut his alarm last night - I knew he wasn't going in this morning.

Not that the alarm would have mattered, because we woke up without power. But luckily it was restored at about 8:30 am.

We woke up to the sound of rain, which was falling on top of the ice that fell overnight.

D-Dad drove into work and reports that the major roads are fine, but the local police department reports a lot of road closures, power outages, etc.

Saw the picture above. Be sure to knock those icicles off and ice out of your gutters. When the melt happens, the water could come into your house. It happened to me with the storm earlier this (or was it last?) week.

Every time I look at the gas (or electric) bill I'm convinced it's all confusing just to trick us out of extra money and that they purposely mis-estimate readings to screw with me.

145.160 therms @ $0.3657344
63.574 therms @ $0.3584799

and then there are balancing charges, and delivery charges versus service charges blah blah blah.
