We've been getting reports here that it will be darkest before the dawn. CF, can you confirm these?

That is correct smg. It is expected that the darkest periods will be just before dawn, but of course, there may be other very dark periods as well. Darkness is very unpredictable. However, we can say for certain that it will be darker before dawn, as compared to after dawn. Smile and nod.

NWS again. Well, they mean well.... I asked my daughter (age 30) yesterday if she remembered it ever being below zero in her life (it has, several times) and she said no, so I guess there are some people out there that this is an adventure. Though I am pretty sure she knows enough to wear a hat and gloves. And parka and scarf. She even wears them when it's 40 degrees, bless her heart.

Ceetar Jan 07 2014 11:05 AM Re: Happy Polar Vortex!! |

Well, 10 years ago, maybe 15, we had a January of frigid temperatures like this. I remember specifically because it was sorta pre online ticket sales and I spent 6 hours in Shea Stadium's parking lot and briefly in the not much warmer ground level inside the doors. I think this was also the year Buffalo got 8 feet of snow while I was gone and it all melted by Spring semester.

If a part of the polar vortex gets pulled south, that means that warmer air is getting pushed north somewhere. I can remember this time of year in 1994, when the highs in New York were in single digits, parts of Siberia were experiencing temperatures in the 60s.
|
Frayed Knot Jan 08 2014 07:05 AM Re: Happy Polar Vortex!! |
Listening to some newscasts last night, their guy on the street was forced to admit that, even though it were still quite cold, the wind wasn't quite as bad as expected in some areas and therefore the 'wind-chill factor' expectations weren't nearly reached. At one point they admitted that the wind had diminished to just about nothing at that moment making the air temp and WC-temp essentially even. At which point they sent it back to the studio weather guy who went right back to talking about the wind-chill factors.

The geeks at the Weather Channel have apparently named this storm 'Janus. Not sure if it's because we're in the midst of January, or because they see this storm as somehow two-faced. Or maybe it's that the gulf moisture associated with it came up from the vicinity of Port Arthur, Texas; I'm still investigating.

I didn't really hate him until his hand-picked staff pulled this sociopathic stunt and he acted like the last guy to know. Yeah this looks like the lamest blizzard ever where we are. I went into the office today to gather crap in case of a school closure but that looks like a very long shot now.

I hate it when my prospective blizzards fizzle out. Damnit I was looking forward to a snow day. And unlike in school, I don't have to make them up during spring break.

despite no longer getting them due to 'work at home' I was definitely looking forward to 'working' while watching the Mets game today.

Good weather is anything I don't have to shovel.

themetfairy Mar 03 2014 08:51 AM Re: Happy Polar Vortex!! |
The storm just skirted us, for which I'm grateful. It's nice to have finally caught a break during this never-ending winter, and MK didn't lose any further days from his spring break.

The funny thing is, the stupid polar vortex actually

It didn't look too bad but it's not exactly good. We got around 6-8 inches. Good snowball snow but all the fun of snow has left me.

Zvon Mar 16 2014 06:22 PM Re: Happy Polar Vortex!! |
Whoa, can't believe I need to bump this one. They are calling for 6-8 here. It just started. I've decided I could never ever live in Alaska. And possibly Maine.

How did it go Zvon?

Sorry Coob. Didn't see this. We got around 8 inches then. Was gone pretty quick as it got warm the next few days. Calling for 3-5 tonight. This is totally ridiculous.

cooby Mar 26 2014 01:09 PM Re: Happy Polar Vortex!! |
We got a dusting last night too. Onion snow
|
themetfairy Mar 26 2014 01:42 PM Re: Happy Polar Vortex!! |
We also got a dusting. No shoveling or school delay, so I can live with that.
|
cooby Mar 26 2014 02:13 PM Re: Happy Polar Vortex!! |
What would have been a sure two hour delay last November they didn't even bother to plow this morning lol
|
Zvon Mar 26 2014 02:36 PM Re: Happy Polar Vortex!! |
Got about four inches by 2am but it was all slush by 10 this morn. Roads clear. Grass still snowy white. The wind is wicked out there today. Very glad no shoveling was necessary.

d'Kong76 Apr 15 2014 07:30 PM Re: Happy Polar Vortex!! |
Sleet and freezing rain, yay!
|
MFS62 Apr 16 2014 07:31 AM Re: Happy Polar Vortex!! |
Thank goodness that the phone system at work was fouled up last night. They sent us home an hour early. The rain was just turning to sleet and snow when I got home.
