Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest 2014

From 156.8 lbs on January 1 to 153.4 lbs on February 1. I like it.

Going to bed an hour earlier on weeknights has helped, as has not drinking alcohol on those nights. I also upped my running and ran 155 miles last month.

125. One pound above goal weight.

Ideally I'd like to be 3-4 pounds trimmer. OTOH, I'm celebrating the fact that this was my 60th consecutive monthly weigh-in within two pounds of goal. Five years of not being fat anymore - it still doesn't feel possible.

This'll never be successful on the infomercial circuit.
Diet and fitness plans that sell have to involve a minimum of effort, take no more than 5 minutes per day, and not bring any deprivation, will power, or sweat into the mix.

I will get back in this. I gave up alcohol for Lent and am hoping that helps (like it has Fman).
I weighed 155 over the weekend and hope to get down into the mid 140s by the end of the year. And 140 or less eventually.
Total weirdness for someone who weighed 105 for most of her adult life

Great to hear Irish - yes, dropping weight definitely helps with running! And nice work coobster!

125 today. One pound above goal, and that gives me 61 consecutive months of weighing in within two pounds of goal weight. As always I'd like to shed another three pounds or so, but considering the fact that I was away this past weekend and that yesterday was Opening Day, I'm very happy to have been able to keep the streak alive.

Fortunately my mind is not a famous person and will not be drug through the mud for those thoughts, however true.

We're "pound pals." :)

I tend to do better during the week, which could be due to the fact that I only drink alcohol on weekends and I drink late in the evening. The snacks and alcohol weight seem to hang around from one day to the next on Saturdays and Sundays.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest 2014

Six years ago today I attended a neighborhood block party. I ate like a pig, was disgusted by what the scale said when I got home, and decided then and there to sign up for Weight Watchers Online.

That was one of the best decisions of my life. Today I am at a healthy weight, and I feel great. Because of that I was able to run the New York City Marathon, go off of Lipitor, and generally change my life for the better in many ways large and small.

Losing the weight and maintaining the loss require constant work, but the work is worth it. I feel better today than I did in my early 40's, and for that I am immensely grateful. Thank you Weight Watchers for helping me achieve a much better life.

I tell people this all the time. The key is finding something active to do that you enjoy, that you love, that you look forward to doing. If it's a chore, it'll be the first thing you blow off. The love of the activity is what creates the habit.

It was achieved through a diet that is REQUIRED by sickness, so i'm not sure how to answer that. Frankly, i'd take the weight back tomorrow if i could eat a burger and fries again. or chocolate. or ice cream. or fried chicken. or pizza. or chow fun. or a steak from Peter Luger. or anything they show on DINERS, DRIVE-INS AND DIVES.
I watch the Food Channel now like its fetish porn.

Great work Vic!

Not as much as i'd hoped; its ever present and ignites if i eat anything outside very rigid parameters, or eat in the evenings. Or step on a crack. or if its a day with a "Y" in it.

You make a lot of excuses, man.

Not to be a jerk, but, just noticing, you've always got some reason to not exercise. Yet you're also repeatedly holding out hope that you'd be able to create some kind of routine for yourself. If you didn't care I don't think you'd bother posting your intention or hope. Said with all due respect.

You're a parent now. Might be time to fix it.

no, be a 'jerk' that's fine. probably what I need. I apologize if I come off as whiny.

To be fair, I have the same problem with not getting to other things I want to do, mostly writing. So it's not just a "ugh, exercise" thing and more of a mental thing. It's becoming clear to me that I'm not going to succeed until I reach that breaking point (that metfairy mentions above for her) that makes it more of a priority than the myriad of other things I want to spend my time doing. On the other hand, I might be using that as an excuse itself. It's certainly a slippery slope.

While obviously getting healthier and slimmer and such is important, and valid, it's also not something that's really causing me issues. Life's short, and I'm gonna blow off say going to a beer festival with my friends and having a good time for something that's not even really bothering me?

Obviously there are all sorts of mental olympics going on here (hey, why doesn't my brain burn calories at the same rate as my heart? haha). I'm working on it.

There's time you can find.

You can do 5-10 minutes of core work 3-4 times a week. You can have hand weights around to use while watching TV. You can go for walks with the baby.

Carve out the time - you'll be glad that you did.

A person's priorities are based on what they do, not what they intend on doing or what they mean to do. Your actions define what is important to you. It's hard for me to believe you when you say it's important, but don't make any consistent effort to embody it. It's clearly not important to you, or you'd be acting upon it. What you mean when you say it's important is, "I know it's important to other people, just not to me, not right now."

And if it's not bothering you, why the repeated need to make people think it's on your list of things you hope to do? Clearly there's a discrepancy there.

Having said that, it should be noted that I spend PLENTY of time indulging myself in terms of the foods I eat, the alcohol I imbibe, and the leisure pursuits in which I engage. While I don't dine out for lunch 4-5 days a week like some of my (heavier) coworkers do, I do also join them from time to time. No one who knows me would accuse me of not living my life to the fullest.

Not everyone has to deprave themselves of all joys in order to get healthy.

I wonder, also, how much enabling happens in your home if there's no support system or there's the temptation of foods that the people you live with also want to have around them. I'm lucky, in that sense, in that the "treats" I keep on hand for my wife are not those that really appeal to me, and I do all of the grocery shopping in my home as well as the cooking, so I'm in control of these things in my environment.

Also, why wait until something "bothers" you -- you'd prefer to get healthy after you get diabetes? Or start to suffer from joint pain? Or respiratory problems?

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest 2014

The other thing about joys/deprivation is that... well... you enjoy the good stuff more. When I drink, it's not whatever-you've-got-man, it's the good stuff, or I'll discreetly have a water. When I indulge in a burger, I'm not eating a fast food hamburger or an Applebee's Colby-slathered thing... I'm eating a great fucking natural-sourced-beef, high-fat-content, medium-rare big-b Burger. When I feel like some fucking pork, I don't molest the crappy pulled-pork at a mall restaurant; I stick my boy-parts hip-deep in some roasted pig. Enjoy the good bad-for-you... just, y'know, don't have it as your staple. Make your daily fuel just that-- fuel, with some frills.

Also... I echo what tmf said about workout-lets adding up. I've been on a new job with funky, flux-y hours for two months now, with precious little time to train. But I've done isometrics for my abs and squats in the shower, arm work with my 30-40 pound bag while waiting for/walking to the subway, and raises/leg lifts while actually working; I look like a moron (it helps that I'm not traveling during rush hour, typically), but I've been able to maintain fitness without one visit to an actual workout facility.

Ceetar - here's another thing to keep in mind. It may sound really intimidating taking advice from some of us who have run long distances, etc. Just keep in mind that none of us started out running marathons. When I first started running I couldn't go more than 1/3 of the way around the block without stopping; it took me a very long time to work up to running 5K and longer distances.

Some people are natural athletes. I'm not - I was always that short, fat and uncoordinated kid who came in last in all school phys ed events. Six years ago I was 38 pounds heavier, on Lipitor, and heading straight towards middle age malaise. Getting myself into shape has had all sorts of benefits, including the ability to live without cholesterol medication, and hopefully it will keep me from developing the diabetes that runs rampant in my family.

Start with baby steps - a little bit here, a little bit there. Once you do, you'll find it natural to do more for yourself over time. But getting yourself into healthy shape is the best gift that you can give yourself and your daughter - you're going to need that improved endurance in order to keep up with her!

Oh, I definitely go stretches where I'm at least doing a little bit here and there. I can't do a 5k without stopping, but It's not like I get to the end of 30minutes of run/walking on the treadmill and think "OMG I'm going to die!" more like "okay, I've 'been good' can I go home now?" I haven't really gained weight, I've been within 10 or so pounds for the last 4 years. It's just that I never keep up my progression long enough to dip below, and then something happens, whether strict laziness, or a stretch of migraines, or simply something else going on that I focus on and any semblance of routine disappears and then I struggle to get back to it.

I'm the same way with food really. I'll go stretches where my only sins are really the portions and then I'll have stretches where I just don't care and eat whatever's there. Even if those stretches are shorter, they generally balance out the good ones.

There are other things going on of course. My life is on it's head right now and I'm petrified about daycare costs. I don't even know what my daily schedule is going to be like as we figure all that out yet, so it's hard to figure in exercise. I know, I know, gotta force it in but so far haven't managed to do so.

sure, there are ancillary things. but 90% of it is the simple calorie in, calorie out calculation.

Particularly where I'm concerned. my muscle tone is fine. It's really just the idea of the strain on my body of the extra 50+ pounds (And the corresponding cardiovascular endurance)

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest 2014

Calorie-in/calorie-out calculation is significant, but it most assuredly is NOT 90% of it.

Once you get a little bit of initial weight lost, muscle tone/lean muscle mass makes a huge difference in how your body processes food/produces energy, how your body weathers stresses, and how you lose more poundage/maintain any loss, long-run.

only because, get this, muscle burns more calories than fat.

The weight loss aspect of it is what helps your body weather stress, at least mostly. obviously you don't want to be flabby, but strictly muscle ain't great either. it's less flexible for instance.

but I have muscles. they're just covered in fat.

123.8. Back to being a little below my official goal weight.

This also marks the sixth consecutive year that for at least ten months I've weighed in within two pounds of goal. Thus, I earned the sixth little key to go on my Lifetime Membership key ring -

i usually sleep dreamless sleeps. but one time, i had a dream where i was wearing a pink bunny suit. and then as i was walking around my high school, suddenly, i wasn't wearing hte bunny suit. i was naked, and ernest borgnine. well, i think i was ernest borgnine; i didn't walk past any mirrors. so i got into airwolf and followed ET to the moon. when we landed, there were trees and a lake in a crater. the swimming was good, and when i got out of the water i woke up.

i don't really know how i feel about achieving that dream...
