I was so bad at seeing movies in 2013. If I watch I'm just going to root for American Hustle for everything since that's the one I saw.

Re: All Purpose Academy Awards 2014 Thread

I've only seen 3 of the best picture nominees so far (GRAVITY, HER, AMERICAN HUSTLE). Of that small group, i was most impressed with GRAVITY. While i appreciated HER (particularly Johannson's vocal performance -- when is that going to be a category?), i did find it meandering after a time, even though ultimately moving and worthwhile. I'm just not a big Joaquin Phoenix fan. But i did like Amy Adams more in this than in AMERICAN HUSTLE, which i think is entirely overrated. The performances are fun, in a cartoony, garish way, and its entertaining enough, more or less, but its mostly about hair... bad hair. I was not moved or particularly interested in any of it. And that the low-level scumbags figure out a way to get over on the high-level scumbags doesn't give me quite the uplift one might think. But Bale is certainly incredible (once again). But GRAVITY was masterful in every aspect; the beautiful cinematography and design, the stellar performances, the taut direction, the powerful themes... its all there.

I definitely want to see WOLF OF WALL ST and have some interest in NEBRASKA, too, but no interest at all in CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, PHILOMENA, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, or 12 YEARS A SLAVE, . Well, I might catch up with SLAVE on cable, but the other 3 would require a "desert island"-type situation.

My one sure fire pick is Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor.

I skipped Captain Phillips in the theaters, but will catch it on On Demand when it comes out next week.

Re: All Purpose Academy Awards 2014 Thread

I've seen American Hustle and Gravity. Loved Gravity, was mildly entertained by American Hustle. (I agree with Vic, it's very much overrated.)

Of the others, I definitely would like to see 12 Years a Slave and Nebraska. And I'm kinda curious about Her. I may eventually watch Wolf of Wall Street but after The Departed I've had more than enough of Martin Scorsese. (Although I liked Hugo a lot.)

I knew Meryl Streep would be nominated for August: Osage County. I haven't seen the movie, but it was a completely predictable choice. I think I'll be rooting for Sandra Bullock in that category.

The Wolf of Wall Street is way more entertaining than The Departed.

Cate Blanchett is my choice for Best Actress - her performance in Blue Jasmine was fabulous.

Re: All Purpose Academy Awards 2014 Thread

Blanchett is always fabulous; she's one of the best around. But i hated JASMINE with a white hot passion. Woody has always had an inclination to populate his films with awful people, but this one may have set a new standard.

Re: All Purpose Academy Awards 2014 Thread

Nebraska and Philomena the only nominated ones I've seen. Might see 12 Years a Slave and/or Her this weekend.

Nebraska I liked less than I thought I would. Dern was great but the nominated actress playing his wife bugged me. It was also really predictable.

Philomena, which was mrs. sharpie's choice, was a lot better than I thought. Actually, quite moving.

Philomena is a lovely film.

12 Years a Slave is imperfect, but nonetheless impressive. Definitely worth seeing.

I didn't see that either. But I was talking about the nominations in the supermarket this morning, and the cashier was incensed that The Butler had been shut out.

I was thinking this also about Leto also...but...as a longshot relative unknown Michael Fassbender was awesome..Check him out in a 2008 British indie backwoods horror "Eden Lake" The guy is possessed..

Saw 12 Years a Slave and Captain Phillips over the weekend to bring my total to four of the nine. My order so far:

1. 12 Years a Slave
2. Philomena
3. Nebraska
4. Captain Phillips

It's really not even close. 12 Years a Slave is a very impressive movie. The others were all fine. Captain Phillips was good for that kind of movie, that is to say not the kind of movie I really care about.

Re: All Purpose Academy Awards 2014 Thread

what's been a neat benefit of new technologies is the development of actual distribution channels for shorts in recent years. in ye olden tymes, there was never a way to see these films, except sometimes movie theaters showed pre-feature shorts and cartoons. Later, the animated shorts would get compiled and released briefly in art houses. then video evolved, and more access. then cable tv and their specialty channels came along, hungry for interstitial programming, so more access. Now, VOD and digital downloads on all different platforms make these films available to everybody.

Sunday is the big night. Here are my picks -

Best Film - 12 Years a Slave
Best Actor - Matthew McConaughey
Best Actress - Cate Blanchett
Best Supporting Actor - Jared Leto
Best Supporting Actress - Jennifer Lawrence
Best Director - Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity)

I'm splitting Best Film and Best Director; Gravity is a technological marvel, but 12 Years a Slave tells a more compelling story. Jared Leto is my one sure bet - I will be in shock if he doesn't win for his incredible performance in Dallas Buyers Club. Best Actor is a huge tossup - I could see it going to any of the nominees.

I plan on hunkering down with D-Dad and a bottle of champagne and watching the festivities during our umpteenth winter storm.

A bore fest really, Ellen wasn't all that polished and her early dig at Liza was awkward to say the least, Samsung was the big winner.

I did like Leto's speech, but then I see on twitter some commentators not all that happy because he didn't mention transgender by name , apparently there was a lot expected from his speech, seems a bit much to me.

Eva Marie Saint - a one-time hot blonde with ties to Alfred Hitchcock (and an Oscar), turns 90 this year, claims (and looks) to have had no work done, and looks terrific.
Kim Novak - also once a hot blonde with ties to Hitchcock, is 81, has obviously had a ton of work done, and looks and talks like a train wreck.

Seeing Novak like that was sadder than the IN Memoriam montage and having to listen to Bette Midler sing "Wind beneath my wings". Goldie Hawn is on her way there, too. I hope these women are watching this closely and stop mutilating themselves.

The ironic thing is that Novak's career-defining role was as a woman who submitted herself to artificial transformation, and became a monster for it.

Re: All Purpose Academy Awards 2014 Thread

i don't know if VERTIGO was career-defining so much as career-capping; she had done PICNIC, MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM, PAL JOEY and BELL, BOOK & CANDLE leading up to it, and never really did another successful thing after it. It was pretty much a 5-year career, but the image of her in BELL, BOOK & CANDLE, petting and singing softly to her cat to put a love spell on Jimmy Stewart while staring seductively and hypnotically right at me, is the one that will stay with me forever. VERTIGO is an all-time great movie, but its much less about Novak than it is about Stewart. In VERTIGO she is the object, in BELL she is the subject.

And i would disagree somewhat with your characterization of the plot of VERTIGO; she is not turned into a monster by submitting herself to artificial manipulation; it is Stewart who becomes the obsessed monster, and Novak the sacrificial lamb to the power of the male gaze and killed by her inability to escape it. Stewart is the monster; WE as viewers, as voyeurs, are the monster in that story.

I watched Kim Novak just the other day in one of her much lesser known movies, Boys' Night Out, a kind of amusing little picture from 1962 with James Garner and Tony Randall.

I didn't watch the Oscars, so I didn't see what she looks like at 81. I'm curious, but don't know if I want to try to track down an image.

Going back 20 years, aside from '12 Years'--which I'm not avoiding, just haven't gotten around to yet--the only BP winners I didn't see were 'English Patient' and 'Lord of the Rings', but in the case of those two there's little chance that I ever will.
Of the others in that two-decade span, while you wouldn't have to beat me before I'd agree to see either 'The Artist' or 'American Beauty' again, I'm certainly not going to watch either one willingly.

Re: All Purpose Academy Awards 2014 Thread

Regarding the show last night:
The freaking show was going on its (seemingly) 25th hour when Ellen decided to order in pizza and waste even more time. (Why couldn't they have had Bette Middler sing while they were paying homage to the dearly departed, not after?)

The poduim partner of Anna Kendrick was the Academy's way of telling Anna, "You're not a big star-yet".

I wonder, if Gravity had been nominated for, and won, the Oscar for costume design, would they have awarded it to NASA?

yeah, if it's on a commercial station and I leave it on I'm gone by the first commercial or it's just background noise.

My wife does this and it drives me crazy, especially when it's a movie we have on DVD somewhere.

1929/1930 - "All Quiet on the Western Front"
1928/1929 - "The Broadway Melody"
1927/1928 - "Wings"

Would happily watch again:
Casablanca - one of the few movies I can watch again and again. I probably watch it every few years.
Wings - have only seen it once, but would like to see it again.
It Happened One Night - fun movie.
Mutiny on the Bounty - love it! Charles Laughton is fantastic in this. I'd guess I've seen it five times.
The Bridge on the River Kwai - terrific movie. I've seen it three times, I think.
The Godfather
Rain Man
The Artist - as a silent movie fan, I got a kick out of it.

Once was enough:
Gigi - I like Maurice Chevalier, but his "Thank Heaven For Little Girls" number is nothing but creepy by today's standards. And much of the rest is awful.
An American in Paris - Gene Kelly's most self-indulgent movie. The 17-minute dance number drained my energy.
West Side Story - not bad, but not worth a rewatch.
The Departed - a lot of style, but not satisfying. Jack Nicholson is on the other side of the shark in this one.
Gandhi - not a bad movie, but too long to sit through a second time.

Rian Shunter here.

I liked the way Ellen announced Idina's name TWICE after her performance, to try and make up for fucktard Travolta. It's amazing how self-involved these pricks are... if you are a presenter, you have one job, just one; to announce the person's name correctly. If you can't be bothered to do that right, don't show up. Send a native-american woman to give your speech. She'll be much more articulate i'm sure.

yeah, Ellen, was amusing enough but there was really very little entertainment value in this year's show. The pizza thing didn't work at all. And i lost the damn pool.

not because they all suck necessarily, just because i have little interest in re-seeing them considering how many others i've yet to get to.

anytime :
