Re: Round One, Game Four (2013-14 CPKC)

behold, my ike-davis themed song, song to r.e.m.'s losing my religion.

...

Unlike that big hulk
That big hulking Du-
da who can not field
the leftfielder with no glove
the distance in his eyes
he doesn’t say too much
I’ve said enough

Some say I sucked harder
I say this is not right
Losing my position
Two thousand ten I was huge
And I still know that I can do it
I thought I hit enough
I haven’t hit enough

I want you to see the apple
I want you to see me swing
And hit the ball and watch it fly

Every player
On terry collins’ squad
Is looking my direction
hoping to see what I can do
I’m a hurt lost and blinded fool
Fool
I thought I hit enough
I hadn’t hit enough

Remember this.
Remember back to my ankle injury
It upended the ship
What happened to my season there
Where did all my abilities go
Flailing about
I can’t hit a curve

I want you to see the apple
I want you to see me swing
And hit the ball and watch it fly

But that’s not just my dream
I should make the team

Some say I sucked harder
I say this is not right
Losing my position
Two thousand ten I was huge
And I still know that I can do it
I thought I hit enough
I haven’t hit enough

I want you to see the apple
I want you to see me swing
And hit the ball and watch it fly

And I’ll be on the team
Try, try, I try
I should make the team
Make the team
Make the team, team.

SAUL KATZ IN THE CRADLE

My son asked me just the other day
If he could have a new toy with which he could play
So I borrowed some cash and got Saul to pay
We teamed up with Nelson Doubleday
We owned the Mets ‘fore I knew and as young Jeff grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you, Dad
You know I'm gonna be like you”

And my Jeff, he was born with a silver spoon
Likes to eat cereal and watch cartoons
“Can I have the Mets dad?”
“I don't know when, but we'll run a great team then, son
You know we'll have a good time then.”

My son came from college just the other day
Got him drafted by the Expos even though he can’t play
“Can I have the Mets?" I said "Not today
Instead here’s the Cyclones of low Class A”
And as he jammed the team with aging ringers to win
He said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

And my Jeff, he was born with a silver spoon
Likes to eat cereal and watch cartoons
Help me build a replica of Ebbets Field
And we’ll demolish Shea Stadium, yeah
You know we’re gonna knock down Shea

Well, I got some bad news just the other day
Bernie Madoff was caught in a financial squeeze play
"Son, we’re flat broke now unless we steal from the team,
We can’t make money by legitimate means.”
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow 200 G’s
Just cut scouting, can I have it please?"

And my son, he was born with a silver spoon
Likes to eat cereal and watch cartoons
When we teamed up to buy out old Nelson
We had a good time then, son
You know we had a good laugh then

Now I’m semi-retired, my son rules the Mets
Attendance is bad, and there’s millions in debts
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Fred, if I could find the time
You see Rubin wants a whisper and there’s a player to smear
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dear
It's been sure nice talking to you.”

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And that Jeff he was born with a silver spoon
Likes to eat cereal and watch cartoons
“Let’s build a new mall on the Shea-plate site
And we’ll get together then, Dad
You know we'll have a good time then.”

Definitely the toughest choice of the four, but I went with Katz.

Wow!
Both of these are worthy of winning the the whole contest.
Shame they had to go head-to-head.

Both great ... but Katz is legendary!

Props to "Losing my Position" for the high degree of difficulty.

I went for it.

Didn't like where the writer broke the lines, but, yeah, difficulty. And stripped-from-the-headlines immediacy. And urgency. And vulnerablity and heart. Bravo.

I admire a high-wire act, I do. But "Katz" just works.

In my mind, that's enough for the edge.
