Original host of MTV News. Kind of a nerdy-looking guy who took delivering news about pop music way too seriously.

I tend to like the Fleetwood Mac songs with her on lead vocals best.

Re: Breaking News from Kurt Loder: Music in 2014

Kurt Loder is/was a pretty darn good investigative journalist/rock writer who co-wrote a really good memoir of Tina Turner that became the source for her acclaimed hit biopic, What's Love Got to Do with It?

He left all that to become the director and primary host for MTV's Music News, which --- while definitely improving MTV's brand --- just as definitely hurt his brand, and made him look sort of toolish, with his older newsman's gravitas, while surrounded by the young and adorable.

The definition of "tool" in the context of MTV has certainly evolved in later decades, and Loder would probably be a breath of fresh air.

She's my favorite Mac member, just as George is my favorite Beatle, and I've come to realize that my favorites probably have a lot to do with me being third in the pecking order among my childhood friends.

I think that works for girls too. If a circle of girls from my high school got into Duran Duran together, the alphagirl would be take Simon Lebon as her fantasy boyfriend, the betagirl would get John Taylor, and gammagirl would get a pick from all that remains.

Re: Breaking News from Kurt Loder: Music in 2014

According to my trusty Casey Kasem reporting from the American Top 40 rebroadcasts, Toni Tennille was the first woman to appear in the Beach Boys touring band, as it started becoming bloated in the early-to-mid-seventies. But she would get flagged by security every afternoon. Being a "girl" in a band of "boys," security would never believe she was with the group, pegging her for a groupie, until the tour manager would be called and she'd get waved into the stage area. They'd complete the setup, she'd go back to her room, and when she'd return for the show in the evening, the same routine would start all over again.

I'm thinking (1) the Beach Boys had groupies in the seventies? And (2) had nobody heard of the "All Areas Access" badge? Was this one of those things I can only assume was invented by or for Led Zeppelin? I'm already convinced the tour shirt was a Led Zep innovation.

That'd be a fun book to write. Take one trait of the rock tour and figure out who was first.

First all-hockey-arena billing.

First band to travel with their own lighting tress.

First laser show. (Believe this credit belongs to Wings.)

Dry ice clouds. (Sabbath, is this you?)

First tour shirt.

First tour shirt with dates on back.

First all-areas-access badge.

First extended rock guitar solo that allowed the other members of the band to leave the stage.

First extended rock drum solo that allowed the other members of the band to leave the stage.

First de rigeur encore.

First recorded stage greeting that asks the city if they are prepared to rock.

First guest appearance by an old blues dude.

First destroyed hotel room.

Hello again, everybody. Kurt Loder reporting from in front
of famed Radio City Music Hall, where the Grammys used
to be held back when they were cool. Fame veteran hair
metal band Mötley Crüe have announced their retirement
from the music industry. When asked if this announcement
is timed to generate an interest in a so-called "farewell"
tour, and creating a new financial premium on the band
for any futurer dates beyond their upcoming tour, front-
man Vince Neil high-fived bassist Nikki Sixx. Drummer
Tommy Lee noted that the street value of umlauts has
already tripled since the story first leaked on gossip site
TMZ.

In an aside, it should be noted that guitarist Mick Mars is
frankly looking awful (and that says a lot, coming from
this reporter) and it might be a workable plan for the band
to take advantage of the farewell tour's sense of nostalgia
to perhaps consider returning to the bands early, KISS-style
kabuki makeup.

Very awful indeed. And of course, we will give you all
the facts just as soon as they become available.

In other news, veteran seventies Hall of Fame rockers
Queen will be returning to the road this summer, minus
deceased vocalist Freddie Mercury, of course, as well as
retired bassist John Deacon. Filling in as front man will
be former American Idol competitor Adam "Don't Call Me
Miranda" Lambert, who should bring some of the vocal
range and shameless showmanship that previous fill-in
Paul Rogers lacked, while being young enough to call
drummer Roger Taylor "Gramps."

Asked about expected ticket prices, famed promoter
Crumley McEvilstein laughed and said, "College is SO
over-rated. Your kid would probably be better off paying
his own way anyhow."

Kurt Loder here with some family reunion news.

With Tommy Stinson re-joining Paul Westerberg and taking
a version of the Replacements back on the road, the
question of who would play bass for Guns 'N' Roses on their
upcoming tour of South America was on the minds of fans.
As many as six fans, to be more specific.

Well, let them wonder no more, because this reporter has an
exclusive source (his Twitter feed) informing him that the
answer is none other than Duff F. McKagan. The bassist from
the band's glory years, McKagan is long sober and founder of
a wealth management firm. He was also one of the last
people to see Kurt Cobain alive.

Can a man return to Axl Rose's orbit and stay sober? We'll let
you know as the story develops. I hope he hangs in there,
because it might make for more illuminating interviews than
I've gotten in the past.

Re: Breaking News from Kurt Loder: Music in 2014

Hi, I'm rock reporter and scenester Kurt Loder. Fans of
iconic Australian hard rock band AC/DC are palpably upset
this morning over rumors that the veteran group is packing it
in at the twilight of a long and insanely lucrative career.

Prior reports had fans anticipating a new album and a tour to
follow, so the leaks comes as a particular kick in the gut to
the band's raucous faithful.

The unconfirmed reports suggest that founding member
Malcolm Young has gone home to his family, either unwilling or
unable to continue to play, triggering a supposed pact among
members to never replace each other. One imagines that the
band make more money from residuals of their back catalog's
appearances in Iron Man trailers and relief pitcher entrances,
so the motivation to tour again wouldn't be particularly financial.

Has the band done their last dirt-cheap dirty deed? At this point,
the answer is unclear. Be rest assured, that when that answer
does come to light, it will come to light here at Kurt Loder's Music
News. In the meantime, enjoy this review I wrote about them in 1982.

I dunno. I've actually been going through my beaten-up copy of the Rolling Stone Record Guide, the original 1979 edition, and its shocking how brutal Dave Marsh and His Pompous Pals were on AC/DC (and a lot of other bands that have far outlived their critics -- like KISS, Rush, etc). I don';t think any of AC/DC's records got more than a one star and most got a bullet "worthless."

AC/DC's website is both confirming and denying
swirling rumors about the status of the band.

CONFIRMED is that guitarist and founding member
Malcolm Young has returned to be with his family
while contending with an unspecified illness.

DENIED is the notion that Young's absence spells
the end for the iconic Aussie metal outfit.

Many factors remain unknown. Among these are
the gravity and nature of Young's illness, whether
or not his hiatus is permanent, and whether the
remaining band members intend to record or

I suppose that the composition and business philosophy of Warner Bros could have changed over 20 years. Or Prince's goals and recording philosophy have changed over that time. Or a little of both.

Or they drove a dumptruck of money to his house. Or he's desperate to get exposure any way he can at this point. Or a little of both.

Seems that Paul Simon and wife Edie Brickell got into a small spat the other day and had the cops come to the house and get it all straightened out.
Both say in a hearing that it was a temporary thing and neither has reason to feel threatened by the other.

Maybe he's just doing a really long distance dedication from some undisclosed location.

We're getting reports now of a new supergroup, comprised of former members of Blondie (drummer Clem Burke); The Romantics (singer Wally Palmar); The Cars (guitarist Elliot Easton) and the Chesterfield Kings (bass player Andy Babiuk). Known as the Empty Hearts, this 60s inspired band of 760s and 80s musicians have a debut record coming this summer. Be certain you aren't the only one on your block not to miss this momentus event.

You had me at Clem Burke and owned me at Elliot Easton, but... Wally Palmar?

Dave Herman is not the only legend tapdancing on the
brink of infamy this evening, as punk rock icon Exene
Cervenka of the legendary LA band X is out there
proclaiming the Santa Barbara killing spree is a hoax.

Exene, purveyor of one of the weirdest solo albums ever,
featuring her extended excerpts from The Unabomber
Manifesto
over a background of meandering acid jazz,
joins the ranks of "truthers," who frequently use social
media to proclaim that various widely reported violent
events are created by the government, media, or an
even shadowier organization/conspiracy, for the
alleged purpose of manipulating the populace, perhaps
to get them to accept stricter gun control laws.

Exene has in recent years been diagnosed with MS, and
upon remaining mostly a-symptomatic, has proclaimed
that she may have been mis-diagnosed.

Her tweeted claims of hoaxes being what they are,
Crane Pool poster Edgy MD --- long a fan of X and the
Knitters (a side project featuring three fourths of X plus
Blasters guitarist Dave Alvin) --- has declared himself
embarrassed and chagrined, and has publicly stated that
a more accurate diagnosis for Ms. Cervenka might, in
fact, be "koo-koo."

X is back out on the road this summer, performing classic
albums in their entirety. We at "Breaking News from Kurt
Loder" will be following this story further should any further
whack-a-doodle details develop.

After much debate and anguish among the community
of consequenceofsound.net (who? what?) it has been
established, to the surprise of nobody, that the greatest
drummer of all time is... Rush's Neil Peart.

Yes the Canadian godling takes the crown after besting
Led Zeppelin's late skinmaster John Bonham, and while
the result should shock few, the ferocity of the
beatdown might, with Peart taking 87% of the vote and
Bonzo only 13%.

While the advancement of the players through the draw
might beg the occasional nitpick, the real controversy
may lie with who made it into the draw in the first place.
Ringo Starr and not Charlie Watts? Phil Collins and not...
I don't know... Tony Thompson? And do we really want
to compare the apples of the rock era to the oranges of
jazz?

We'll have more on this as the story develops including a
few (absolutely vulgar) words from Mötley Crüe's Tommy
Lee.

With a small set of drums, you really can't beat

Rumors continue to swirl of a possible Kinks reunion.

Four years after the death of bassist Peter Quaife, the
only band member who hasn't assaulted guitarist Dave
Davies, Davies has hinted as much, saying the ball is
in brother Ray's court. Ray, for his part, has said the
idea would be to do a new album to support on tour.

This reporter recently listened to "Waterloo Sunset" and
found it remarkable how much young Ray Davies, in all
his flower, sounded like Paul McCartney... sounds today
at 72.

Kinks should get back together.

How about this thing?

Re: Breaking News from Kurt Loder: Music in 2014

I'm a big Kinks fan. I saw Ray Davies at the Beacon back in the 80s, but don't remember loving the show. Around that time, he had made a 1-hour music film for the BBC, which was basically one of the first ever long-form music videos, called RETURN TO WATERLOO. I think he was touring that album (a solo project) at the time. It's got great music (the video is cool, too; it starred a very young Tim Roth), but he wasn't great in performance; his voice was ragged, he seemed disinterested.

You can watch the video on hulu: http://www.hulu.com/watch/403831

I saw the Kinks back in the '70's (Schoolboys In Disgrace tour) and have seen Ray Davies twice in recent years. While in theory it would be nice to see the Kinks reform, Ray's solo shows lean heavily on Kinks material and he has had a great band backing him. Do we really need to see the Davies boys fighting it out all over again? Maybe the answer is yes and I'd certainly like to see them if they do.

I'm reporting today live from the set of a new video by OK GO, a band as famous for its creative videos than for the music that accompanies them, where they try and out-do themselves again. Let's have a look.
