CANCION DEL DIA 2014
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jan 16 2014 09:15 AM |
This guy is a LA singer-songwriter who tends to do more "serious" stuff, but he snuck this in at the end of an album where he wrote songs about people who funded his work, based on their responses to a series of questions (economics of the record industry or something). Anyway, as a means of finishing the project up on a silly note here's a song based on one person's favorite phrase. As dumb as this is it's almost funnier that someone hasn't done this already.

We never built a 2014 version of this thread, but I'm building it NOW!!!! just for the purpose of hosting this stumbling, bluesy, marimba-fueled track performed by The Both, co-fronted by Aimee Mann and Ted Leo:

I've been geeked about the Aimee Mann-Ted Leo pairing for a while and dig the song. The album doesn't come out until Tax Day. Waiting is hard.

Wow. After all these years, a sequel to "Rock 'n' Roll Girls." And the video, once you include the COLA factor over time, is even cheaper.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Sep 10 2014 07:27 AM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
Cola factor? The song reminds me of Marshall Crenshaw's "Our Town"

Girls need to rock n roll, that's for sure. He just cranks out one after another of these as the first one is from a new album that came out yesterday.

Paul Collins and the Beat from L.A. Friends and close cousins of Peter Case and The Plimsouls. A terrific fun easy song to play on the guitar very very loud.

I don't know. I kept that "God Only Knows" at arm's length when I saw it. Me old fogey no trust high-end commercial quality design. I though they were going to push a Lexus or a Mac or something on me at the end.

Mets – Willets Point Nov 04 2014 12:32 PM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
Zvon, before I click, is that Pharrell Williams I see there? 'Cause I'm kind of sick of him.
|
Edgy MD Nov 04 2014 12:47 PM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
It is, but he is only the first of a few dozen performers.

Ehh. Clever choreography and interesting cameras angles only take one so far, especially when the music is barely interesting. Does this group even exist if they had to depend on their music alone? Fun to watch for a time but I was bailing halfway through. As far as the G-O-K video, I'm surprised anyone was able to convince Dave Grohl to go in front of a camera.

Ditto and pretty much my first thoughts. Worth clicking. The others on it over-balance it to the good side of the force. I love how Brian was in it. I'd still rather hear the original song, but that vid is just visually beautiful.

|
Edgy MD Nov 04 2014 06:23 PM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
Well, nobody contemporary. They either have a visual image or they don't have a very long career. Or at least not one lucrative enough to live off of.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Nov 04 2014 06:25 PM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
OK Go is OK. A little bit on the cute end of the powerpop spectrum for me (and that song is a disco-y even for them) but I'm pretty sure they're one of the few bands that's cracked the code of success in this century, so hats off to 'em.
|
Frayed Knot Nov 05 2014 07:34 AM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |

Having a visual image in addition to the music is one thing. With the OK Go stuff (based on limited exposure I admit) it seems as if the visuals are the main, if not the only, attraction. 'Help' the movie certainly helped 'Help' the album, but people still listened to (and still listen to) 'Help' the album without the movie to follow along with. Now maybe there are all kinds of people with OKG songs on their IPods bopping around to the tune even though they don't have the highly choreographed vids in front of them, but I wouldn't bet on that population being very sizable.
|
Edgy MD Nov 05 2014 07:45 AM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
OK Go certainly has a large catalog of music produced for it's own sake that people enjoy for it's own sake. They were already up to their seventh single, "Here It Goes Again," when they became associated with their video innovations.
|
seawolf17 Nov 05 2014 08:35 AM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
My favorite OK Go tune is actually their first single off their first record.

More sizable than the population listening to music on iPods (or other only-music-listening devices), prolly. And if they're pretty significantly involved with the video generation-- and they certainly seem to be-- then, well... they've got more of a creative stamp on their video product than, say, the Beatles did, don't they? On another note... part of what's amazing about that new video is envisioning the process of making it as you watch the result-- I mean, that one-take business with a gigantic crowd and drone-cameras, good gravy.

Only for a few seconds. All the performers who make guest appearances on this little deal here are just on very briefly. And being clueless as I so often am, I don't even know who half of them are. Going more or less in order: Pharrel ?? woman w/short hair and nose ring Elton Lorde ?? Guy lying down Brian w/Tiger on piano ?? Redhead in forest ?? Chick in bubble Stevie ?? Woman w/opera wig on carousel horse ?? Piano guy Brian May on guitar ?? Boy group ?? Guy on ladder ?? Girl on swing Chrissie ?? Guy in balloon ?? African? singer ?? Soprano Dave Grohl Sam Smith?? Brian to close it out

First time they use Brian, it sounds like they just took a sample of him singing when he was young. The second time, they seem to save him with processing and autotune.

It really does sound like its a double tracked 60's Brian that first time. There's a list of everyone in it (that was linked to me the first time I viewed it). I can go hunt up that list if youz get stumped.

My go to assumption for all things British pop culture is that if I don't recognize them, they're probably on EastEnders.

Do you want to boogie? Sure, everyone does! That's why I offer you this old videotape (good audio, though) of the Georgia Satellites doing Ringo. Rick Richards on lead vocals.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Nov 12 2014 09:22 AM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
Pretty good performance but the Satellites seem so quaint to me. Greasy Southern guys are so much harder core these days.

Weird song but yeah, a great voice. And I like his shirt.
|
Edgy MD Dec 08 2014 08:22 AM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
Yeah, his high range may be Orbison-esque, but that song doesn't have the Oribisonian gravity, even as it aspires to, so it comes out a little more jarringly.
|
Edgy MD Dec 08 2014 07:35 PM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
Meanwhile, the nu AC/DC gives you exactly what you came to the shop for: stomping blues riffs, strutting bravado, and lingerie football.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Dec 09 2014 10:04 PM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
I'm actually rooting for these guys now but this is not a home run for me. It has the bloozy edge but lacks the poppy punch of their best stuff. Also, Johnson sings like a 4-pack-a-day guy when he should probably be a 2-pack-a-day singer.
|
Edgy MD Dec 09 2014 11:02 PM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
Yeah, that was really cool. If the Stones were gonna film a video in a tight little amphitheater, they'd send out to every modeling agency around to pack their audience with beautiful but hateful aloof twenty-somethings with $250 haircuts. AC/DC pads their audience with... AC/DC fans.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Dec 10 2014 12:10 AM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
Denny's a little off the beam both ways-- in the Gilmore vein and the Orbison vein-- and doesn't quite come off for me. I could see him doing something more like what Antony and the Johnsons do... perhaps the songwriting just needs strengthening (the kid may want to become a Fullbright scholar on that front... am loving that guy since watching that video a few weeks back).
|
seawolf17 Dec 10 2014 07:31 AM Re: CANCION DEL DIA 2014 |
See, that's AC/DC's whole thing, though. They've never tried to be anything other than who they are. Thankfully, who they are is awesome, so they don't have to try anything else.

I don't think that was even a choice in the LRB DIMT challenge. Who the hell greenlighted a 9 minute song for those guys?

Well, there's a radio edit down to 4:15 which was the single (it was their first American top 40 hit, in 1976). But this long version is the tits.
