CANCION DEL DIA 2014

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jan 16 2014 09:15 AM

This guy is a LA singer-songwriter who tends to do more "serious" stuff, but he snuck this in at the end of an album where he wrote songs about people who funded his work, based on their responses to a series of questions (economics of the record industry or something). Anyway, as a means of finishing the project up on a silly note here's a song based on one person's favorite phrase. As dumb as this is it's almost funnier that someone hasn't done this already.

We never built a 2014 version of this thread, but I'm building it NOW!!!! just for the purpose of hosting this stumbling, bluesy, marimba-fueled track performed by The Both, co-fronted by Aimee Mann and Ted Leo:

I've been geeked about the Aimee Mann-Ted Leo pairing for a while and dig the song. The album doesn't come out until Tax Day. Waiting is hard.

That was the Atlantics, with "Loneyhearts" from 1981.

Next up, Scotsman Roddy Frame of Aztec Camera with his first new material in 6 years. It's Old Man pop in the vein of recent Nick Lowe stuff, moving if you're not too careful.

I finally got around to watching the series premiere of HBO's THE LEFTOVERS last night (I know, different thread) and this song played over the closing credits. I was interested enough to look around on Google about it and found this guy's website. It turns out that he is playing in my town in two weeks, so this morning I snatched up tix to go see him (I know, different thread).

Musically, he seems to be a cross between a poor-man's Jeff Buckley and a poor-man's Jimi Hendrix. From this footage, he reminds me of Trent Reznor at that one rainy festival in the 90s.

It doesn't look like he has ever released any albums but is releasing singles from time to time.

Ehh. Clever choreography and interesting cameras angles only take one so far, especially when the music is barely interesting. Does this group even exist if they had to depend on their music alone?
Fun to watch for a time but I was bailing halfway through.

As far as the G-O-K video, I'm surprised anyone was able to convince Dave Grohl to go in front of a camera.

Ditto and pretty much my first thoughts. Worth clicking. The others on it over-balance it to the good side of the force. I love how Brian was in it. I'd still rather hear the original song, but that vid is just visually beautiful.

OK Go is OK. A little bit on the cute end of the powerpop spectrum for me (and that song is a disco-y even for them) but I'm pretty sure they're one of the few bands that's cracked the code of success in this century, so hats off to 'em.

Having a visual image in addition to the music is one thing. With the OK Go stuff (based on limited exposure I admit) it seems as if the visuals are the main, if not the only, attraction.
'Help' the movie certainly helped 'Help' the album, but people still listened to (and still listen to) 'Help' the album without the movie to follow along with. Now maybe there are all kinds of people with OKG songs on their IPods bopping around to the tune even though they don't have the highly choreographed vids in front of them, but I wouldn't bet on that population being very sizable.

OK Go certainly has a large catalog of music produced for it's own sake that people enjoy for it's own sake. They were already up to their seventh single, "Here It Goes Again," when they became associated with their video innovations.

More sizable than the population listening to music on iPods (or other only-music-listening devices), prolly.

And if they're pretty significantly involved with the video generation-- and they certainly seem to be-- then, well... they've got more of a creative stamp on their video product than, say, the Beatles did, don't they?

On another note... part of what's amazing about that new video is envisioning the process of making it as you watch the result-- I mean, that one-take business with a gigantic crowd and drone-cameras, good gravy.

Only for a few seconds. All the performers who make guest appearances on this little deal here are just on very briefly.
And being clueless as I so often am, I don't even know who half of them are.
Going more or less in order:

Pharrel

Elton
Lorde
?? Guy lying down
Brian w/Tiger on piano
?? Redhead in forest
?? Chick in bubble
Stevie
?? Woman w/opera wig on carousel horse
?? Piano guy
Brian May on guitar
?? Boy group
?? Guy on ladder
?? Girl on swing
Chrissie
?? Guy in balloon
?? African? singer
?? Soprano
Dave Grohl
Sam Smith??

Yeah, that was really cool. If the Stones were gonna film a video in a tight little amphitheater, they'd send out to every modeling agency around to pack their audience with beautiful but hateful aloof twenty-somethings with $250 haircuts. AC/DC pads their audience with... AC/DC fans.

Old, fat, Aussie AC/DC fans.

I agree that it's not a home run. Considering their circumstances, though, a double is pretty impressive.

Denny's a little off the beam both ways-- in the Gilmore vein and the Orbison vein-- and doesn't quite come off for me.
