Things You Didn't Know Until You Learned About Them in 2014

There was a tv show inspired by Jim Bouton's Ball Four, created by and starring Jim Bouton himself. It aired on CBS in 1976 and was cancelled after 5 episodes. I feel that I should know about this since I've read the extended editions of Ball Four and he probably would've mentioned it in there, but if he did, it didn't leave an impression.

Re: Things You Didn't Know Until You Learned About Them in 2

Bouton has written about the show, as has famed Newsday TV critic Marvin Kitman, and they both consider it to be an unambiguous disaster, and since they co-created the show, and the former starred in it and the latter wrote for it, that's saying a lot.

They even got Kitman's fellow Long Islander Harry Chapin to do the theme song.

Because it was about skirtchasing. May have been novel in the book but on seventies TV, guys with fruity heads of hair and proud of their chest hair laying lines on young women were sort of everywhere.

Do you remember Tug McGraw's short-lived comic strip that appeared in Newsday? I forget what it was called -- might have been "Scroogie" - but I think the team in the strip was called the Pets.

I had the same experience as Cooby, re: BALL FOUR tv show. Much anticipation, then "wow this sucks".
TV Shows with a baseball background have not worked (or even been tried) very often, other than the recent EASTBOUND & DOWN.

EASTBOUND & DOWN (2009-2013) - 4 seasons; 29 episodes
BACK IN THE GAME (2013) - 12 episodes
BRONX IS BURNING (2007) - 9 episodes
CLUBHOUSE (2004) - 11 episodes
HARDBALL (1994) - 9 episodes
BAY CITY BLUES (1983) - 8 episodes
BAD NEWS BEARS (1979-80) - 2 seasons; 26 episodes
BALL FOUR (1976) - 5 episodes

Re: Things You Didn't Know Until You Learned About Them in 2

I remember watching one episode of BALL FOUR (probably just part of one in fact).
What I remember was a set so cheesy that a JHS prop committee could have made a more realistic looking dugout with about 40 bucks and some leftover paint. The plot was one adapted directly from the book where a pitcher hits a HR thus winning a prize for some random fan, and before he was able to make his trip around the bases his teammates concocted a scheme where they'd fake a letter from the winning fan promising a cut of the prize to the player. To make it more convincing, the players throw in the touch where the fan mis-spells the recipient's name.

It would have been bad even if you didn't know the plot going in.

Re: Things You Didn't Know Until You Learned About Them in 2

I mostly enjoyed Bay City Blues. I mean, it was promising, but only four episodes aired and I doubt I got through more than one complete one*. Steven Bochco show bringing Hill Street Blues' realism to the sticks. Even had Dennis Franz as the hard-boiled pitching coach, and you don't get a bigger Bochco signature than that.

Sharon Stone played a baseball Annie, and Bubba from Forrest Gump played a prospect.

The Mary Tyler Moore logo featured the cat in a baseball cap.

*Don't believe I made it any further into Ball Four than any of youse either.

I think I watched 1 episode of Bay City Blues. It was all going OK until some ballplayer's father got cancer or something and he was morose and crying and stuff and I was like, "there's no crying in baseball"*.

Re: Things You Didn't Know Until You Learned About Them in 2

Yeah --- two episodes coming back to me. One has a ballplayer with all arm and no control getting taken out for a party with the Annies, with perhaps the coaching staff hoping it'll loosen him up. He takes the mound afterwards and throws two or three hummers in there before puking in his glove.

The two or three pitches are enough to impress the organizational scouts, and he gets called up to the bigs --- which is weird, because they try and impress on you that Bay City is Nowheresville Like getting callled up from Savannah or something --- if the Mets Sally League Team wasn't in Savannah but in Lakewood.

Anyhow, he gets called up, gets shelled in his first appearance, and then dies. I don't remember how.

The next episode features the guy's funeral, and the coaching staff goes out for a drink, and Dennis Franz says something sardonic to the manager, like, "It's a shame about the kid dying and all, but he's still our best arm for Tuesday."

The manager answers that the organization has a surprise, and indeed they do. They've signed an old MLB vet and they're sending him down to Bay City to get his arm in shape. The guy's an asshole who big leagues everybody, including his son who is on the team and YOUWERENEVERPROUDOFMEDAD!!! The guy wins a game but I think you're right, and cancer comes next.

Three things you might not have known until 2014 about about the movie BREAKING AWAY:

1. The actors who played Dave Stollers' parents, Paul Dooley and Darbara Barrie, are both still alive & in their 80s.

2. Dooley & Dennis Christopher had previously played father-and-son in an earlier movie, A WEDDING.

3. The actress who rats on Kath to her fratty boyfriend during the serenade scene, was married offscreen to Dennis Quaid, who played Mike.

I knew Dooley & Barrie were still living, but did not know of the 1st Quaid marriage.
Looking it up, it was his first marriage but her, P. J. Soles, second. They had met the previous year filming THAT WINNING SEASON.
Both, not surprisingly, were playing older than their supposed 19-ish characters in BREAKING AWAY, Quaid was 25 when the movie came out, Soles was 29.
They divorced after five years, no children.

Might as well split it off, this is one of those endless-discussion internet things isn't it? How To Watch Star Wars.

I'd probably just default to release order, since that's the order I watched them in. (Theoretically anyway, I don't actually remember when I watched the first ones prior to their re-release in the 90s)

I've got quite a few years before I deal with this anyway, And will have to factor in 7.. and 8/9?

Might there be logic to watching 7/8/9 first and then watching 4/5/6 as a prequel of that? I guess it depends if they're good or not.

There's publication order, there's the order Lewis wrote them in, and then there's an internal chronological order, so you've got three options of which order to chose from.

Coney Island Creek was filled in about 50 years ago or so with the construction of Shore Parkway. They used the dirt from construction of the Verrazano bridge to fill it in, making the island a peninsula. Now the western part of the Creek opens into Gravesend Bay and the eastern part into Sheepshead bay. The west end stops at Shell Road before the east end starts again in the Manhattan Beach area. It can be crossed into Coney by bridges on Cropsey Ave and Stillwell Ave, and Ocean Parkway and Coney Island ave both run right over the landfill, straight into the middle of the island.

http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/coneyi ... rk/history
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coney_Island_Creek

We locals referred to the western end as "shit's creek", not only because of its sludge-like composition, but because that's where the mob often dumped bodies. We could see the cops dragging the creek every once in a while, when i was attending Mark Twain JHS (the creek ran behind the school, which was next to Kaiser Park). But it was mostly a ship graveyard. I remember there used to be a yellow submarine stuck there; it was said to have been built by somebody around there, but eventually abandoned.

what happened to the home repair thread? did we have one?

Dishwasher replacement yesterday. Took the old one out Sunday, installed the new one yesterday. and it works! hah. I just need to redo the water connection because I've got crazy water pressure and it drips a little. need some of that connection-goop. Also need a strain relief thingy for the junction box. The previous dishwasher was hardwired and wrapped in a ton of electrical tape, and the wires were stripped a little too far imo, want to cover that up.

Aretha Franklin is very much associated with Detroit, and lives in the area. I've been spending a lot of time in the city this year, and thought I'd make a cool Motown mix iTunes playlist for the now-frequent two-hour drives.

I've been renting from the library a bunch of Motown compilations -- and kept thinking "Hey, where's Aretha?" Finally did a Google search on her name and Motown -- and discovered she was never part of the Motown team! She recorded on Columbia then Atlantic.

Whoa. Mind blown.

So in all my research for this, I learned that the Motown operation was pretty neat. Berry Gordy had songwriting teams that would come to work each day, write cool songs and decide which of the label's artists would record them. There was lots of competition between the songwriters also between the artists. Smokey Robinson was of course and artist, but also wrote a ton of songs for others, especially the Temptations.

Cool stuff. The Motown Museum -- Hitsville, U.S.A. -- is just north of downtown and I'll have to check it out.

Please do, and post about it!

Meanwhile, I found out recently that Doc McStuffins is voiced by the actress that plays Director Vance's daughter on NCIS. I looked it up because Doc has such a cute giggle

Funny, the shows we watch when we're watching the grandkids. Doc McStuffins is one of them. :)

When goldfish swim with their head pointed downward and their tail upward that is an indication of constipation.

Remedy : Feed the constipated goldfish canned peas. It works as a laxative.

My auto insurance rates were increased when I reached 71 years old. Allstate does it whether or not your driving record is good. That new rate stays in effect for 5 years. My agent told me the newer policies can increase every year after 71.

The lyrics Elton John sings on "Circle of Life" are not the same as the ones in the movie.
