February 1st

Let's face it, February suxx. Ok you already knew that (well, maybe not if you're in the southern hemisphere but you know what I mean) but I try to compensate by looking at the positive side of things.
- as months go, it's short
- the amount of daylight has been increasing for about six weeks now and has reached the point where the rate of increase is picking up and the change is clearly noticeable in the mornings and/or as you get out of work.
- the average temperature has started to rise as well. OK this is all of like one degree so far so it isn't noticeable yet and there are shirley some cold days still ahead. But I enjoy the mental knowledge that the average daily min and max has bottomed out, that its headed up, and will be some 6-8 degrees higher by the end of the month than they are right now. It's a start.
- And finally, there will be baseball this month. Yeah, the old 'Pitchers & Catchers' thing is more fluff than anything, but there will be ballplayers in Florida and Arizona this month, there will be news, there will be photos, there will be video, and there may even be some player movement to discuss.

That's all I got.

It's Black History Month! Should we start a George Washington Carver thread?

I don't mind February much. It's not too hot. It's light enough for the evening commute which means people drive a little better and saves me some commuting time. Valentine's Day is a good excuse to go out or stay in or just to have chocolate. mmm...chocolate. It marks the end of Football.

Re: February 1st

Having a February birthday helps. Plus, college basketball, and pitchers and catchers report.

Days are getting longer too, which means more weeknight dusk running and less running in the dark, compared to December/January.

Also, who doesn't love to get fucked-up and cruise for easy chicks who'll show their wares for plastic necklaces on Lincoln's birthday?

I have to say, I like February better than January, which has always been my least favorite month.

I'm a sucker for Valentine's Day, and right after that is my son's birthday.

And just a little after the hitters get to Spring Training, the Winter Olympics will descend upon us.

Re: February 1st

I like January better than February: Christmas is over (finally) and mostly you can just sit back and cruise for a few weeks.

However February has its obvious charms....you know that spring is going to finally show up soon (look at your trees -- there are buds on them). Also my mom, sister and brother have their birthdays this month :)

Valentines Day is a delight! Surely the prettiest holiday of all.

Weather is probably the worst of the whole year but if we have a house with heat and warm food on the table, I don't think we can really complain about that...

I feel like March is the worst because by then I'm well sick and tired of the cold weather of the previous months but it's still not "nice" out. Plus: Rain. Plus: No real baseball. Plus: 31 days.

March has got my birthday in it though, and sometimes Opening Day, sometimes Easter. You get your first nice days in usually, without it being too hot. St. Patrick's Day, a lame holiday but you get silly green things and an excuse to drink Irish Stouts and Whiskey so..

Re: February 1st

I always disliked March as well. In the winter it pretty much doesn't matter if the day is a handful of degrees above or below normal because it's not like you're going to be coin things outdoors anyway. But when March (or April for that matter) days are seasonally lousy you feel cheated out of a good day for walking, biking, etc., that you'll never get back. And the handful of good days are more like a tease than a sign of leaving winter behind you.
I don't mind winter, but when I'm ready for it to be over I want it over NOW!!!! and, unlike how things ran in CAMELOT (the musical, not the JFK administration) winter around here rarely exits March the second on the dot.

Re: February 1st

I'm fine with February. College basketball is in full swing. It's the best month for skiing, and Christmas carols are, thankfully, a distant memory.

Spring training starts, which gives hope that summer is not far away. Presidents' day is cool. And there is still the possibility of a blowout snowstorm (I'm from upstate NY. I love snow.)

Days are getting longer. All good stuff.
