VHS Capture/TV Tuner?

Anyone have any experience with this process? I'm working on getting some old Sony Hi8 magnetic tapes converted to viewable storage. Finally got enough working camera parts to get the output to the TV working, so now I need to figure out the best answer to capture the video.

There seem to be a lot of different cables and such that work, and even cheap ones, but the TV tuner option seems reasonable too if I can then use it to capture live TV (say, for example, my parents like to watch Mets games out in the backyard)

so yeah, anyone have a TV tuner they use? Capture live tv/convert old magnetic tapes?

Not sure what you're trying to do, but if you can get a picture
on the tv you could buy a cheap dvd recorder on ebay now that
they're kinda obsolete and make your tapes into discs.

That basically, although I'd rather convert them to mpeg or something. but I can always pull off the disc too afterwards. Basically home videos from a Sony Video8 camcorder from like 88-95.

The caveat being that it seems like some of the same devices will also allow me to pick up over the air type broadcasts, or even to basically stream the signal that's going to my TV to my laptop. i.e. can turn the game on inside and my parents can watch on laptop outside.

Most cable and fios now lets you watch on other devices.
Don't know much about it, feel like a dinosaur sometimes and
I used to be the geeky answer man.

oh duh, good point.

Although it's usually app devices and my parents are resistant to that. And not sure it works for SNY. but yeah. fuck it, i'll buy the cheap $15 cable that transfers to mpeg.
