2014 IPP: Jacob deGrom

It was moderately popular last year, so we'll try it again this year. IPP stands for Individual Player Predictions. These will be threads where we share our expectations of how a player will perform in the current year. Feel free to make your predictions as specific or as vague as you like. (You can find a listing of the 2013 IPPs here.)

One more for today. I think Jacob deGrom will spend most of the season at Las Vegas, making some spot starts for the Mets and joining the team for good in September.

I think deGrom gets packaged for a SS.

I think DeGrom will wind up in the pen, and we won't see him in Queens until 2015.

Mostly-successful late-season cameo.

Subs in for Niese when his shoulder goes bad again and Syndergaard/Montero aren't quite ready. Goes away then comes back when Gee goes down with season-ending shoulder trouble.

Goes 2-4, 5.05, mixes in a couple good starts with a couple bad ones.

Doubt we'll see much of him this year. Cool last name.

We all did a really good job with the predictions for this guy. Whatever happened to him anyway?

This is great. When was the last time someone came out of the blue like this?

Harvey came with a good amount of fanfare.

There have been out-of-the blue seasons by vets, certainly (Ojeda, Gilkey, Dickey, Hundley)

But among unheralded yoots coming in and making an unexpected splash, the main precedent I can think of is Cone.

We were like 0-10, now I know how Granderson feels
in home series.

Re: 2014 IPP: Jacob deGrom

Here's the Baseball Prospectus entry from its 2014 annual, released just before last season began:

It didn't look good for deGrom as a ninth-round pick who almost immediately underwent Tommy John surgery, but his consistency over just two minor-league seasons since his recovery makes him a contender for the fifth starter's spot in 2014. The power righty's strikeout numbers took a hit with his graduation to the high minors; that can be expected with such a rapid rise, but further acclimation might be useful before the big jump [to the majors]. One added plus: His power arsenal - a mid 90s fastball with sink and a hard slider - would translate well to the bullpen if need be.
