When banners first appeared at the Polo Grounds, fans who hung them over the railing of the upper deck were asked to remove them. IIRC, safety and/or blocking the view of people in the lower deck were given as the reason. Maybe that's why these fans went to the last row of the upper deck.
Or, they got their tickets from Bob Uecker.

Re: The Livepool to Crane Pool Song Parody Contest

I read George Weiss, a former Yank GM, thought it was undignified.

From The Team By Team Encyclopedia Of ML Baseball:
" As an expression of their enthusiasm, [Mets fans] began to bring posters and banners to the ballpark, some made out of bedsheets. At first, ballpark security quickly removed the banners under direction of George Weiss whose Yankee sensibilities were stunned by this undignified behavior. However, under pressure from the press, Weiss relented, and eventually the practice of displaying banners at the ballpark became encouraged. The Mets even initiated MLB's first ever Banner Day."

This book also says the 73 Mets were world champs, so......

Beatle scores point for vegetarians

Paul McCartney has won an 18-month battle against McDonald's and points from vegetarians everywhere.

The long-time herbivore was angered that the chain was displaying pictures of The Beatles at one of its Liverpool, England, locations, according to the British newspaper Daily Star. Managers have since removed the offending photographs.

"Paul's famous (for) saying, 'If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian,' " PETA's president, Ingrid Newkirk, said to TODAYshow.com in an e-mail. "PETA alerted Paul to the photos of himself in the McDonald's restaurant, and he objected to the photos being put up in a place that sells the remains of slaughtered animals between two halves of a bun."

Newkirk added that McCartney has been extremely involved with PETA, starring in one of PETA's first "veg testimonial" public service announcements and narrating a video this year called "Glass Walls" for the group.

McCartney became a vegetarian with his late wife Linda decades ago. He continues to only serve vegetarian meals to his touring staff and ensures there is a vegetarian option for fans at every concert venue he plays.

Then sign up for the Liverpool to Crane Pool. It's coming. Improve your ranking. And for those unranked shirkers, join the ranks of the ranked. This year's Liverpool will be hosted by New York Met Ambassador, Rickey Henderson, who will bring his third eye from the planet Mercury, all the better to identify John Olerud with. That's right -- one of the Hendersons will all be there. And of course, Doctor K will challenge the world. Sign up now. Details to follow. It's a condensed matchup free, free for all, two rounder. Just two rounds. Just two songs. Goo goo guh joob.

Re: The Liverpool to Crane Pool Song Parody Contest

Here's a sneak peek at some of the Liverpool to Crane Pool rules:

It's a two round tournament, with no head to head matchups. In each of the two rounds, all of the song parodies will be placed in one thread. There will be one poll per round. The first round parodies receiving the most votes will advance to the second and final round. Almost half of the contestants will advance to the second and final round. The tournament championship will be awarded to the contestant whose second round parody receives the most votes.

More than one. I'll have a better idea of how many first round votes each contestant gets when I know how many people entered the contest, and thus, how many contestants will advance to the next round.

The 2014 Liverpool to Crane Pool Song Parody Contest is officially here and underway. And because you've been such a lovely audience, without further ado, here are your first round topics, celebrating the 50th anniversaries of the Beatles stateside arrival and the opening of Shea Stadium. You may choose one of the following players, who either played for the 1964 Mets or were born in the year 1964:

[fimg=218]http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SiGHiG_PwXs/Use91FrIyyI/AAAAAAAAKzo/YZ1gFLyD2Zc/s400/64tCharlieSmith.png[/fimg][fimg=222]http://img.comc.com/original/86893db6-23c3-4c33-b454-abfe5235b71a.jpg[/fimg][fimg=223]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O0s-fjP3PtQ/UjKKb696fLI/AAAAAAAAECE/NwvBGKM_PS8/s400/64tFrankThomas.bmp[/fimg] [fimg=222]http://img.comc.com/original/90626609-f850-43ef-8a8b-84d216dce5d7.jpg[/fimg][fimg=222]http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EJYQVXMPpPU/Uso3goS_eiI/AAAAAAAALI4/P1C0ceypwPM/s320/64tRon+Hunt.png[/fimg][fimg=222]http://img.comc.com/original/488a6c8c-3b79-480e-8774-36084e6d38cd.jpg[/fimg][fimg=222]http://img.comc.com/original/a0ceb009-f795-422b-82fd-fb1fefd990ec.jpg[/fimg] [fimg=222]http://img.comc.com/original/c3d13f9d-73df-4ecf-b965-6242fa1195fa.jpg[/fimg]

The Liverpool Wrinkle - Your song parody must be based on an original Beatles song. Eligible songs are original Beatles songs that appeared on any of the Beatles albums shown here:

Your song must parody an original Beatles composition. Thus, other artists' songs covered by the Beatles, like, for example, Roll Over Beethoven (Chuck Berry) or Long Tall Sally (Little Richard) may not be parodied.

There are no head to head matchups in this contest. 40% of the field will advance to the final round. Any forum member who wants to compete, but still hasn't signed up, may still do so. Since there aren't any matchups, we can squeeze anybody in. Just submit your song parody to my private mailbox before the deadline and you're in. You know my name. Look up the number.

And on behalf of our corporate sponsor, I hope you all pass the audition.

Song parodies are due on or before March 17, 2014, 11:59pm.

Re: The Liverpool to Crane Pool Song Parody Contest

Yeah, I think we should be able to write about any players or subjects named John, Paul, George, or Richard.

Possible wrinkle: if we write about George Altman (for instance), it has to be a song originally sung by George. (That may not work.)

Topps notwithstanding, Duke Snider didn't play for the 1964 Mets. Sold to SF just before season started.

Like the '64 played/born motif. Do wish it was widened to include more players who fit the description.

The 2014 Liverpool to Crane Pool Song Parody Contest is officially here and underway. And because you've been such a lovely audience, without further ado, here are your first round topics, celebrating the 50th anniversaries of the Beatles stateside arrival and the opening of Shea Stadium. You may choose one of the following players, who either played for the 1964 Mets, were born in the year 1964 or share a Beatles' first name:

There are no head to head matchups in this contest. 40% of the field will advance to the final round. Any forum member who wants to compete, but hasn't signed up yet, may still do so. Since there aren't any head to head matchups, we can squeeze anybody in. Just submit your song parody to my private mailbox before the deadline and you're in. You know my name. Look up the number.

And on behalf of our corporate sponsor, I hope you all pass the audition.

Song parodies are due on or before March 17, 2014, 11:59pm.

Nevermind, there's no audition ...

Soakies

Bath time isn't quite the same without your cartoon buddies!

The most well known bubble bath container's name, Soaky is now generally applied to bath soap containers from all manufacturers. You'll find some great character items in this category and it is a must browse for any completist collector worth his/her salt!

"Soaky" is actually a brand name (Colgate-Palmolive) that has been used freely as a general term for any figural (usually cartoon) bubble bath/soap container.

These containers had their heyday in the 60's though there are examples from the 50's as well.

The containers are figural and usually made of plastic with the head of the cartoon character hiding the screw cap. Exceptions to this design include those with just a screw cap at the top of the container above the full body and those with figural rubber sleeves in the shape of the body that simply slipped over the generic bottle.

These are indeed a collectible in their own right but also cross over in many areas due to the massive amounts of characters represented.

As with every collectible, condition plays a role as does original packaging and, to a lesser extent, soap contents in tact.

Bath time isn't quite the same without your cartoon buddies. Includes Palmolive and other figural soap containers depicting classic characters.

Two of the most sought after and collectible Soakies are Colgate's Paul and Ringo bubble bath bottles. (There are no Colgate Johns or Georges)

the other contest which was one of our best ever imo.

Jeez, we'll never get McDonald's again. At this rate, not even Amway.

I submitted two songs, because I like to overachieve when it comes to utterly wasting perfectly good time. Put d'Kong's name on one of them and we're good.

Not for nothing but expanding the subject pool would also serve the contest well.

Re: The Liverpool to Crane Pool Song Parody Contest

Some of us have at least managed to come up with something (not a clue, I didn't use "Something.") Was harder than I had thought since I'd used Beatle songs three times in past contests so those songs were out for me and had written about one of the subjects so he was out for me.

An open field would be glorious.

[list]Dear Fred or Nelson
Will you cut loose Cook?
It's been years and years
Now he needs the hook

A lefty specialist
Is no big deal
You can demote John Franco
And bring him on in relief of Al Leiter
RELIEF OF AL LEITER!

My two-cents: It would not be fair to those who have labored
successfully to give the others who have not more content to
chose from at this late juncture.

Oh soitenly. But in general, subject pool was too small from the start and should be opened up wider for the following rounds.

Down with rain delays. Post what has been submitted. If 4/9 or 4/7 of the songs move on, then so be it. It has been extended once and that is enough.

Re: The Liverpool to Crane Pool Song Parody Contest

Limping along here, I'll post the tournament thread early Monday. Anybody who hasn't entered the contest can still do so, provided they submit their parody before we go live with this furshlugginer contest. sharpie musta read my mind. There are only six entries, so far. But four will advance to the final round. The final round topic will be open. But with a coupl'a wrinkles or two thrown in, just for fun.

Re: The Liverpool to Crane Pool Song Parody Contest

Rules for the Final Championship Round.

1. Song parodies are due on or before April 6, noon.

2. The topic is open. You may choose, as your parody subject, any Met player, coach or manager.

3. The Liverpool wrinkle remains in effect. Your song must parody an original Beatles release, just as in the first round.

4. [u:he374bng]The 1964 wrinkle[/u:he374bng] - your song parody must reference at lease one of the following noteworthy news items, events, people places or things from 1964:

LBJ
MLK
The 1964-65 World’s Fair
The Beatles
Clay/Liston
Kitty Genovese
The Civil Rights Murders in Philadelphia, Mississippi
Mary Poppins
The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge
James Bond

Your 1964 reference may be as brief or as lengthy as you feel comfortable with.

The contestant whose second round parody receives the most votes will be crowned Champion of the 2014 Liverpool to Crane Pool Song Parody Contest.

Good luck.

One thing I can tell you is you got to be free.

This will have the same limiting effect that the small subject pool of the prior round had.
