I think he'd probably tell you today that announcing baseball was his calling, at least following his career as a player.

I guess it says something about how the Mets have been run these last few years that top-level jobs with them are the last the person serves in the industry.

I'd be very surprised if Jerry Manuel, Willie Randolph or Art Howe got hired against as field manager.

Phillips, Jim Duquette and Omar Minaya appear to be viewed by the larger baseball world as insufficient candidates for the same job with their squads.

Re: On the air

Duke had a sweet role as VP of baseball ops with Baltimore. I think that was below the GM chair, but who knows who is ever in charge with the bloated Baltimore front office.

Rick Peterson went on to become pitching coach with Milwaukee. He was let go with a year left on his contract, but that wasn't as much a reflection on him as it was a nu manager bringing in his own staff. He's now in the front office as director of pitching development with (you guessed it) Baltimore.

With Willie and especially Jerry, I think they dug their own graves. But Willie is mostly a decent act with a love of the game, and I bet he gets at least an interim job eventually. He's kind of like Carter, though, in that he doesn't see the value in keeping his ambition under his hat, and guys like that end up as pawns in somebody else's big game.

Re: On the air

I suspect Willie gets a job. Baseball-lifer type, has certainly been coaching and around since, his time here wasn't bad, made the playoffs, lots of it could be brushed off as rookie mistakes.

ChickenEggChicken. Did the Mets kill their careers or are the Mets in the habit of hiring shucks I'm just glad to be here type guys that don't have the clout and won't stand up to eff Wilpon or Prince Fredo? A zillion things hadda happen for the Mets to sign Sandy.

Re: On the air

Long Island Mets radio network affiliates emerge way the hell out in Seawolf territory, reports Neil Best.

The HOPE Radio Network announced Tuesday that it has reached an agreement to simulcast WOR's Mets broadcasts over the next two seasons to its five frequencies across Long Island: 107.1 FM on the East End as well as 94.9, 96.5, 96.9 and 104.5 FM.

Rich Anderson, president and owner of the network, said the games would be presented under its Champions Radio division, which also includes Jets games and Stony Brook football and men's basketball games.

Last summer HOPE switched over from a Christian format to an all-sports format in affiliation with ESPN, supplemented by local shows. Anderson said that formula proved not to be economically viable, and the network parted ways with ESPN and reverted to a Christian format last month.

But Anderson said he still wanted to retain some sports presence, and hopes to return to carrying Rangers and Knicks games, as the station did before severing its deal with ESPN.

Part of the point of carrying ESPN programming into the East End was because the network's New York station has an FM signal that struggles to reach that far.

WOR, the Mets' primary new home, has a strong AM signal, but by adding WLIR, fans on the East End should have access to a clearer sound.

Re: On the air

Metsmerized Online says it has the numbers that sent the Mets from 660 to 710 without stopping at 880.

After the decision was made to bring the New York Yankees to WFAN, CBS Radio Inc. who owns the station, still wanted desperately to hang onto the Mets and have them switch to the Yankees’ previous home WCBS 880.

However, WOR, still fuming that they couldn’t sway the Yankees to go with them, set their sights on the Mets and they didn’t care how much it would cost them. They made an offer that Fred Wilpon couldn’t refuse.

When CBS put their final bid on the table, it included $6 million dollars guaranteed plus a whopping 50% revenue share on all advertising. The brass at CBS thought they had clinched the deal.

However, WOR swooped in with a counter-offer estimated to be around $9 million guaranteed, but without the revenue sharing. Given their still unstable financial state, the Mets simply couldn’t resist the extra $3 million in guaranteed dough.

It was that whole bird in the hand thing…

The numbers were told to me by a very reliable inside source and was confirmed by another. Take it with a grain of salt, but I’m inclined to believe both of them.

The suits at CBS seem to think the Mets walked away from a much more lucrative deal. This is not my area of expertise, so I can’t tell you if they are right in their assertion.

This is really interesting. Particularly interesting to hear that the Mets actually had some choices and leverage through this all and weren't just fired and sent crawling to the only partner that would employ them.

I would hope that this is a chance to see a new broadcast entity built around the the team like WFAN was. Hard to believe that something like two baseball generations never heard the team on any other carrier.

Just glad there'll be a buffer between that fine 'OR syndicated programming and the game.

He follows in the footsteps of Howard Cosell, Marv Albert, Bob Brown, Bill Mazer, Al Albert, Howie Rose, Todd Kalas and Ed Coleman to name a few full-timers on the pre-/postgame beat. Directly before Howie invented Mets Extra, it was just Bob Murphy coming on maybe 15 minutes before first-pitch and interviewing somebody. That worked, too.

Mets Extra is mostly commercials though, or at least it was. "Here's today's starting lineup" commercial. "Here's the pitching matchup!" commercial..

so we might not be as buffered as you think.

Re: On the air

If I tune in at 12:45 or 6:45 and I hear a half-dozen commercials that aren't the midday or afternoon drive-time hosts, that will be sufficient.

The original Mets Extra was, as the WHN promos put it, "a Mets fan's dream come true". Howie really threw himself into it and produced what we would today called premium content. The Mets Extra of the Coleman years was less vital, particularly in the context of the current information age. But nice to have that prologue and epilogue nonetheless.

I suspect you'll hear at least a half dozen commercials that ARE for the midday drive-time hosts, but I guess we'll see. My goal when I'm radio bound is to aim to turn it on just before the 30 second highlight clips in the inbetween point of Mets Extra and 'pregame'.

That 10 minutes or so post/pre game with the hosts still are usually all I need given the current information age, but i admit I'm probably not a representative sample. If you don't follow Mets news from 4-7 it's probably nice to get an update on the lineups, who's hurt, what Terry said, etc.

Byrdak still a Met at heart, which isn't the worst thing to be. He sounds like with practice he could be a decent analyst. That's what Spring Training (even the last of it) is for.

Of the five auditions I heard, C.J. Nitkowski and Scott Graham impressed me most. Wonder if Graham was lurking in Clear Channel's thoughts as they dragged their feet in announcing the return of their dynamic duo of Rose and Lewin. Nitkowski came off as not just a player but a person. Even John Franco flashed the potential to be a tolerable homer, though the rough edges would take some sanding. Byrdak once did shtick with GKR in the middle of a ST broadcast, pretending to announce, so he was comfortable. I'm not the least bit in love with Steve Phillips' approach but he was smooth (or so the ladies say).

I could deal with any of these guys who isn't Phillips on those dozen or so dates when Howie or Josh isn't around and not cry HAGIN!

Heard CJ on one of the WFAN shows. He was just signed by FOXSports as a baseball anylist (Not sure if it is in studio or in the booth). Knows his stuff, good voice, good sense of humor. He said the biggest problem facing Japanese players coming here is the travel across (three) time zones. He said they don't do that in Japan, and it will take them time to adjust. Never heard that before - good point, from someone who played in Japan.

hawking fish oil pills. Sorry, I'll stop.

Lewin closes out a preseason NFL broadcast taking an anti-Jewish crack right on the chin.

"Love ya, too, Buddy."

Ouch. Wonder what that booth sounded like once they went to commercial. Josh handled it like a pro, though.

What a pregnant beat that was.

"Somebody dropped a penny between Josh and his (oh-my-God-I'm-never-going-to-land-this-I'm-going-to-come-across-as-a-huge-asshole-and-my-wife-told-me-to-stick-to-one-beer-until-the-broadcast-is-over-and-I-pray-no-one-is-left-listening-but-somebody-probably-is)... family member."

His wife was right.
And, any advertiser that pulls its ads from their broadcasts until he is suspended or fired will be right, too.

Re: On the air

Bauer draws a suspension, although apparently it's just for the last pre-season game. I could be misreading that.

Tellingly, it's not the station or the team or the league issuing the suspension, but Clear Channel, just so we know who's running the world these days.

Re: On the air

Is this Nitkowski I'm hearing?

He's good. Sharp and on top of the game. Not as funny as Wayne. And doesn't make the effort to engage Howie when he's on play-by-play. Howie is polite enough to wait for openings, but they don't come that often, so Howie can disappear for several batters at a time.

Yeah, I caught an inning or two of him last night.
Sounds like a natural.

Re: On the air

Nitkowski needs some work but he wasn't too bad. Needs to tell you whether it's a ball or strike before describing the pitch, though. That 's OK on TV but not on the radio. A minor quibble. And yes, he had no chemistry with Howie.

CJ's the best of the guests who fill in for Josh. Not that Phillips, Byrdak and Duquette are all that hard to top. But yes, CJ could do this regularly if he wants.

Re: On the air

So, has anybody else found John Franco's act to be as awful as I have? Mumbles half-baked jock cliche platitudes in New Yorkese with no regard for the pacing. "What I've notice this year, Howie, is de Mets are afraid tuh brush people back."

Franco is very Jeteresque in that he always seems so conscious of a certain pre-constructed image in projecting his personality that he has very little personality left.

Re: On the air

Agreed. Franco might be worthy of a spot on the post-game show but he is not a good color man, even with Howie's guidance.

Franco is flat-out awful. But he's a Jeffy favorite, so I suspect we'll be hearing more from him, unfortunately.
