2014 IPP: Carlos Torres

It was moderately popular last year, so we'll try it again this year. IPP stands for Individual Player Predictions. These will be threads where we share our expectations of how a player will perform in the current year. Feel free to make your predictions as specific or as vague as you like. (You can find a listing of the 2013 IPPs here.)

The Mets seem to have more options this year, so Carlos Torres is a lot less likely to be called upon to be a starting pitcher. I could see him as a long reliever, like Tom Gorman or Pat Mahomes, but in this era of too-frequent pitching changes, relievers rarely go three or four innings, unless it's extra innings and the closer is being "saved" for "save situation". I think he'll be less reliable than he was in 2013. 40 games, 4.60 ERA.

Terry seems to like him an awful lot. I do too, but it seems kind of silly to announce in mid-March that a guy's made the team as the last reliever/swingman. Gotta keep guys motivated.

Re: 2014 IPP: Carlos Torres

He's out of options, and they like him.

You forget, though, Grimm... he was REALLY good as a reliever. Last year, he pounded the hell out of the strike zone (1.77 BB/9), and stuck to what works more often than in past years, so while some BABIP variance might be in order, he probably won't be unreliable. And there are a lot of starting options, but most of them come with innings restrictions, injury-recovery, or iffiness attached. I think Torres gets his starts, and gives us something like last year's numbers.

39 G (10 GS), 102 IP, 3.71 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 85 K, 7.5 K/9, 2.6 BB/9, 12 HR allowed

Re: 2014 IPP: Carlos Torres

I thought he had the "middle inning/long man" spot locked. But then they stretched FArnsworth to 2 innings recently, so Carlos may have to battle him for that spot.

I hope Carlos wins. He pitched well last year. But his role is the kind that makes you say you don't want to see him too often.

41 G, 63 IP, 3.16 ERA, 1.32 WHIP.

Re: 2014 IPP: Carlos Torres

Terry's already announced that he's got a spot nailed down, so any battling is going to be for which seat he gets in the pen.

Besides, Farnsworth's done. He's only really ever had velocity and a decent slider to recommend him, and both seem to have left town.

Torres and Lannan will be rock-paper-scissor-ing for opportunities, though, I suspect.

I barely remember him from last year. Definitely the best Torres on the team, but not the best Taurus (that'd be Dillon Gee).

uh, about the same as last year.

I'm bullish on him. Gives us 70 solid innings out of the pen. 3.00 ERA and a 4.0 K/BB ratio.
