Farewell Farnsworth
Mets Guy in Michigan Mar 23 2014 12:24 PM |
I don't know if spring training guys get "Memories of..." threads, but apparently he exercised his option for free agency after being told he wouldn't make the team out of camp.

Just as well as far as I'm concerned.

Humorist Will Rogers once said that he never met a man he didn't like. He would have punched Farnsworth in the mouth. Later

I think they're trying to re-do his deal as a minor league thingy.
|
G-Fafif Mar 24 2014 08:40 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
Rubin reports such a deal is done. Farnsworth will be a Vegan of the Las variety.

the follow up now has his agent denying that.

Just a guess: Shayla Farnsworth's okay with a temporary move to Vegas.
|
Edgy MD Mar 24 2014 10:15 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
Oh... Shayla was part of the cast of Baseball Wives. How... about that?

G-Fafif Mar 26 2014 08:32 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
Farnsworth officially back in whatever fold he was reported coming back to.
|
MFS62 Mar 27 2014 02:46 PM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
He pitched the last inning of today's game. He gave up a run on a wild pitch.

Indeed. Imagine how many children would ask in horror, "Mommy, what's that goddamn Kyle Farnsworth still doing on the Mets?"

He's awful.

Frayed Knot May 11 2014 06:25 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
1) There is no "arbitration milestone", not a specific one anyway. At best it's an estimate that hovers around the late May/early June time frame but even that only matters if the player you bring up stays up continually for at least three seasons.
|
Mets Guy in Michigan May 11 2014 01:14 PM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
Who do you think would be the first one out?

Frayed Knot May 11 2014 01:26 PM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |

Personally, I have less faith in Valverde than Farnsworth. Beyond that a lot depends on what they do with Mejia. - Is he going to be demoted from the rotation to the pen, or to AAA, or not at all? - If so, does his replacement come from Vegas or from Dice-K? - Are they even willing to consider Montero and/or DeGrom as relievers? - At some point I'm sure they'd like to get a second LHP up here - Will Black or Thorton or someone else currently in Vegas get their act in gear? Black's been better lately - which means he's only walking Half the ballpark.

And now Valverde goes matching Farnsworth by allowing 9th inning run(s?) after starting with 2-out/none-on. oe: and if nothing else, I'm reminded while sitting here watching Valverde that he doesn't have any kind of swing and miss stuff. At least Farnsworth can be counted on the occasional K in between hits allowed/ But Valverde's problem is that the hitters keep fouling stuff off all day long off him to where they're almost certain to find something they like eventually or at least run up his pitch count and shorten his outing if they don't.

Cold Mets released him days ahead of the deadline by which they'd be on the hook to pay him all year.

I was just reporting what I heard on tv. What was bitter about it? It was expected.
|
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr May 14 2014 10:19 PM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
That the release came despite his being one of the more nominally effective Met relievers this year (read: lucky 3.18 ERA).
|
Lefty Specialist May 15 2014 06:18 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
So are we now in the dreaded 'closer by committee' zone?

Put your faith not in closers and no dread shall you know.
|
Benjamin Grimm May 15 2014 06:51 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
I like the idea of closer by committee, if it means you have several good choices. I like the idea a lot less if it means you only have a variety of bad choices.

Well, we cut one of the bad choices. The lack of adherence to one guy though allows a good one to rise from the ashes. There's some talent floating around out there.

Yes Kyle, we all hope you get to pitch against the Mets too.
|
Frayed Knot May 15 2014 07:51 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
I wouldn't expect him to be happy about it, but jeez Kyle, you're 38 y/o, in your 16th ML seasons and your 5th team since 2010; you were picked up via a minor league deal, were cut once already then got back in through an injury and pitched up and down in the meantime - so this really couldn't have come as a total shock.

Edgin likely. Reported to be on the Taxi Squad.
|
Edgy MD May 15 2014 08:09 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
Ah, the "second lefty." In previous years, it had been Jerry's answer to Jerry's "eighth-inning guy" --- his white whale, his bęte noire. Haven't heard the cry for a second lefty much of late.
|
Ceetar May 15 2014 08:15 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
|
I think that's because they've all more or less sucked, but I'd have to look it up.
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket May 15 2014 08:51 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
I sort of like the idea of the Mets finding a bullpen by stashing their worst pitcher in the closer role. It's led to a poor rate of conversion (we have more blown saves - 8 - than saves as a team - 7 - but we're not far off the leaguewide mark (64%) and the influx of arms and competition I think will eventually hit upon the combo that can produce that league average. If they don't there's always the trade market.
|
Edgy MD May 15 2014 08:54 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
What must Valverde be thinking? "How did I wake up this morning with a job? What's that on the back of my neck? Smells uncannily like the breath of Vic Black."
|
RealityChuck May 15 2014 09:39 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
Since everyone seems to agree that the closer's role is overrated, why do people obsess about closers?
|
Edgy MD May 15 2014 09:45 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
Is it possible that everyone can agree that something is over-rated? Isn't this a paradox?
|
Edgy MD May 15 2014 10:09 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
Josh Edgin is official. Mets bulk up on lefties just in time for... the Nats, who are pretty righthanded-heavy with Harper on the DL.
|
smg58 May 15 2014 11:39 AM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
Not that I've been particularly impressed with Farnsworth, but I don't see how swapping him out in favor of a guy with a 2.13 WHIP (not ERA, WHIP) in AAA benefits the team.
|

|
Frayed Knot May 15 2014 01:47 PM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
I never particularly liked the guy, mainly because he just struck me as a big, dumb, jock, meathead. Of course if I were to eliminate guys based solely on that criteria I'd probably have to put half the league on my shit list, but he just seemed like a particularly prime example.
|
Benjamin Grimm May 15 2014 02:01 PM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |
Of course, this story won't really be over until the Mets leak nasty comments about him.

|
smg58 May 15 2014 04:49 PM Re: Farewell Farnsworth |

Lefties are even more overrated than closers. Especially if they have reverse platoon splits and, well, a 2.13 WHIP in AAA.
