I didn't see one already started, so I created a Crane Pool March Madness pool.

Password is Eddie7.

Apologies if someone already started it and I missed it.

Star athletes trend too want to be on television. Or at least in the tournament.

Most of the early games look competitive... with the exception of Syracuse, currently in the process of beating the snot out of Western Michigan.

Underdogs have won two of the first three, including #12 Harvard upsetting #5 Cincinnati.

The amount of pontificating, hear-say passed off as original knowledge, hedged declarations that can make one seem right no matter what the outcome, and just all around bullshit may be higher during this week of the sports calendar than it is in the whole pre-Super Bowl orgy week.

Um, no you don't.

That kind of thing is hardly unique to Golic. Since the popularity of this tournament (plus just about the entire football season) is based on gambling of some sort [straight up picks, fantasy, sheets, etc.] most of these self-appointed pundits spend most of their time hedging their bets:
I'm picking team A to win -- but don't go to sleep on B
C is the better team and should win -- but it wouldn't surprise me if ...
If team D can avoid third-and-longs, hold onto the football, and convert in the red zone they should have a good shot at winning (Gee, thanks, Ace)

One of the things I like about baseball is that the amount of time spent playing the games to talking about playing them is in a sane ratio.

The Warren Buffet-backed Billion Dollar prize for a perfect sheet is over as all entrants had at least one blemish by Day 2 of the tourney.
At CBS.com it took 21 games played to kill all shots at perfection.
And of the 11 million entries via ESPN's site, more than 99.8% were dead by the end of Day 1, then it took until game #28 overall on Friday to drop-kick the remainder.

GPA is a flawed measure because athletes at certain schools don't take the same classes that the "regular" students take.

Re: Bracket Maddness!

So, my post above is about Manhattan College men's basketball coach Steve Masiello reportedly bolting, according to several sources, for University of South Florida. But this morning's news tells a very different story. Apparently South Florida --- WHO KNEW?! --- has standards and does due diligence with regard to coaching hires, and discovered that Masiello never received his degree from University of Kentucky.

Masiello's mentor in all things --- including ship jumping --- is Louisville (for now) coach Rick Pitino. Pitino professed shock that Masiello never graduated, saying that he understood Masiello to be on track to graduate when he was a walk-on player for Pitino at Kentucky. This doesn't really shake out with me. (1) Masiello, if I have the timeline right, only played under Pitino as a freshman, before the latter bolted Kentucky (of course) for another job, and (2) like Pitino really cares about who graduates.

Anyhow, Masiello may emerge from this fiasco at least temporarily jobless. He had already told his players at Manhattan that he was leaving, and I'm not sure his return would be that celebrated by an administration that has now discovered he (a) is eyeing other jobs, (b) is a resume faker, and (c) made them look foolish by getting away with it.

Re: Bracket Maddness!

Between the way they are treated by their employers: have millions thrown at them for jobs they can simply walk away from for a better one at any point; and the way they are treated by the media that "covers" them: most sportscasters either are personal friends with most of the big time coaches or wish they were personal friends and treat them accordingly; there's virtually nothing to discourage most coaches from being bullshitters.

Edgy MD
Mar 26 2014 08:37 PM
Re: Bracket Maddness!

How about (1) the double standard of allowing them to profit handsomely from their job while their players wreck their careers if they so much as talk to an agent? How about (2) the absurdity of how much of their success can be pinned to their brand?

I mean, look at that. If you're an NBA coach, you may succeed or you my fail despite your best abilities, because the teams are pretty evenly matched as far as resources, and you can only control your team's talent so far. So you get fired, but you trade your NBA brand name for a job at a big time college program. The school is practically guaranteed 15 wins a season already, just based on their market position, with small schools to beat up on early in the season, and your pro pedigree gives you an additional recruiting advantage that's got to be worth at least five more. So, you're a 20-win team bound for the tournament before you diagram your first play. How sweet a gig is that?

All the while, look what these brand-name dipshits do when their bullshit can't get them any further and playing field is flattened. Rick Pitino has a .462 winning percentage in the NBA and only put up a winning record in ONE season. John Calipari has a .391 percentage. You're empty suits, guys, and men like you have created a generation of empty suits to follow you.

Re: Bracket Maddness!

There are too many double standards to even list here, not the least of which is the part where coaches walk out in the middle of a contract for a better one while the students they just recruited, in many cases with promises that the coach was there for life, can't transfer without sacrificing a year. Not that sitting out a year is a big deal when you're 18 y/o or anything.

But at the moment I'm just talking about how many of these coaches are treated by the media who are supposedly covering them. Especially with the veteran coaches, I'm amazed at the number of writers who just openly admit how much they like and/or are buddies with a particular guy as if such an admission has no impact on their supposed job description. And the talking-head set are even worse. ESPN is so in bed with college hoops & football these days [they don't merely televise the matches and dictate the day & time of most of them - the network often creates the match ups in the first place] that most act as if it's their goal to become friends and/or promoters of either the big time coaches or the up-and-comers who might one day be. I can't remember, for instance, when the last time I DIDN'T hear John Calipari referred to as "Coach Cal". At what point was it decided that he became your favorite uncle?

With treatment like that it's no wonder that these guys think they can bullshit their way through life and rarely if ever get called on it.

My nephew is a graduate assistant for the men's team; we watched the games this year just so my wife can call out "there's David!" whenever we spot the short white kid in a suit sitting on the bench among the large black men. So the family connection gave us a rooting interest this year. Plus, my daughter is thinking UConn will be her first choice for college as she begins the application process, so this reinforced that... which is unfortunate because, without some financial aid, she's going to a SUNY -- so thanks for nothing, Huskies!
