Schaefer 2014: YEAR TEN!

Voting for the 2014 Schaefer Mets Player of the Year Award will begin on Monday, March 31, the Crane Pool Forum has announced. This will be the tenth season that Crane Pool Forum members will be participating in Schaefer voting. The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year Award was established in the 1970's, and Schaefer points were awarded by Mets broadcasters Lindsey Nelson, Ralph Kiner, and Bob Murphy. The award was re-established by the Crane Pool Forum in 2005. Third baseman David Wright has been the winner in in six of the nine years of the revived prize. The other winners were Johan Santana in 2008, Jose Reyes in 2011, and Daniel Murphy in 2013. A voting thread is opened in the forum at the conclusion of each regular season Mets game, according to CPF spokesmodel Benjamin Grimm. Voting generally stays open for two business days, after which the votes are tallied and the results are posted in the voting thread. In addition, says Grimm, each month a Schaefer Mets Player, Pitcher, Relief Pitcher, and Bench Player of the Month will be named. Voters are asked to adhere to a specific format, which is outlined at http://archives.cranepoolforum.net/6200/f9_t6278.shtml Also, please remember that we have two players named Young this year, so votes for Chris should be CYoung and vote for Eric should be EYoung. in the 3 april game against the cincinatti reds, m.e.t.b.o.t. calculated a total of +0.178 WPA for metropolitan right fielder curtis granderson. based on the total allotment of +WPA in the game, this would have resulted in a total of 7.12 schaefer votes. an adjustment of -0.028 WPA was applied to metropolitan right fielder curtis granderson, resulting in a limit-friendly 6.00 vote. no adjustments were made to other players as the total unadjusted +WPA for the game was +0.229.

The most frequently misspelled names so far this year are Nieuwenhuis (not suprisingly) and Tejada and Farnsworth. I think the name that, historically, had the most challenging spelling was Francoeur, but that hasn't come up recently! I had to dip into the database tables to break that tie between Dillon Gee and David Wright, and while doing so I noticed that some games in 2006 had as many as 35 voters participating! Given our typical vote count this year, that was kind of discouraging, but then I ran some numbers... Average number of Schaefer voters per game, by year. [list:wzgul28t] 2006 13.1914 2007 12.5988 2008 10.8025 2009 10.3086 2010 9.1420 2011 10.3704 2012 8.0617 2013 7.9074 2014 9.1351[/list:u:wzgul28t] We're only down by fewer than two voters since 2008, so it's really not all that much of a drop. But it does seem like the pool of non-voters has dropped dramatically. Maybe as an experiment we can have a game where we ask EVERYONE to vote, just to see how high the number can get.

I wonder if, during the Citi Field era, voting declines as the season nears end. Maybe if you take out the second half of the season, those historical numbers (post 2008) are even higher --- which would mask the fact that voting might be down.

I don't think he's going to get a lot of suds, but this seems to be the thread for this. (Maybe it should be separate?) I believe that over the last two years, Carlos Torres has been the glue that has held the staff together. He has been used as a starter, middle man, setup man and closer.
