Adopted: Carlos Muniz

A while back I adopted Carlos Muniz, a right handed closer out of Long Beach St., and he's bounced around the bottom rungs of the Met organizational ladder since he was drafted in the 13th round of the 2003 draft.

He started last year at Hagerstown and finished at St. Lucie. He's now got 3 full season under his belt and has put together some good cumulative numbers. He's 13-7 out of the pen with an ERA of 4.02. You don't really want your closer in the neighborhood of 4 when discussing ERA, but it's understood that one or two big innings can seriously bloat the ERA and it's hard to shave back down.

That said, the rest of his numbers look great.

112 IP in 93 appearances (all relief). In those 112 innings, he's allowed only 93 hits, walked just 44, and struck out 124 batters. That equates to an impressive 6.8 hits/9, 3.5 BB/9, almost 10 K/9 (9.96 to be exact), and a tidy 1.22 WHIP.

I said this last year and say it again this year. With his age (25 in March) and experience, I expect to see him start at Binghamton and hopefull see some action in Norfolk.

Lastly, he's a cool dude, and did a Q&A with me last April with the help of Jason Gordon, the gracious Manager of PR/Broadcasting for the Hagerstown Suns.

Before we had Frank Thomas or Steve Zabriskie, we had C-Los.

Here's that Q&A:

Crane Pool Forum 15-ish Questions with the 'Los

1) I read you were recovering from thumb and hand injuries sustained last year. How are both? Any lingering effects?

CM: I fully recovered from both injuries. I’m looking forward to a healthy season.

2) You saved 13 wins in your first year at Brooklyn. Did you get the feeling that the Mets were grooming you to be a closer specifically, or just an effective overall reliever who could handle any role? Do the Mets as an organization differentiate between the two?

CM: I feel the Mets are grooming me to be a late inning reliever (closer or set-up) Yes, the Mets differentiate between setup and closer.

3) Were you ever a starter?

CM: Yes.

4) As a player who's played for 3 different teams at different levels of the minors for one organization, have you gotten a feel for an overall philosophy the Mets may have for the development of their pitchers?

CM: Yes, the Mets have an excellent philosophy on the development of their pitchers. It’s more of a mental philosophy.

-For example, how important do pitch counts seem to be (may not necessarily apply to you as a reliever, but still...)?

CM: Pitch counts are important early in the season. Later, when pitchers arm is in shape, pitch counts are just a number.

-Have your off-day throwing programs been consistent from team to team?

CM: Yes. All teams have the same throwing program.

-Are there any philosophies that Pitching Coach Rick Peterson may have introduced at the Major League level that have filtered down through the minors?
CM: Rick’s mental aspects of preparation, and understanding the strike zone have filtered down.

5) Recently, a lot has been made of SABRmetrics (in-depth statistical analysis) being more commonly used by various organizations to help evaluate talent. Have you seen anything to lead you to believe that the Mets lean one way or another with regards to the importance of statistical analysis? Have any of the teams that you've played for employed a stat geek that you know of?

CM: The Mets pay close attention to stats. It’s very in depth! It’s unreal the information they have on the players.

6) What's your own personal time-table for getting to the show? Do the Mets have a time-table for you? Or do you get the impression they're more concerned with refining all aspects of your game now, and when you get there, you get there?

CM: I feel the Mets have a time-table for every player. I’m looking forward to excel as quickly as I possible so I can get to the show.

7) Who's been the most influential manager/coach you've worked with in the Met organization? Why?

CM: The most influencial coach I have worked for is Blaine Beatty (Capital City). He really helped me when I was coming off my injury.

8) Do you follow the progress of other pitchers in the organization with roles similar to yours?

CM: No.

9) When you played for Brooklyn (or any other time for that matter), did you check out a game at Shea? What'd you think?

CM: Yes, It was awesome. The organization took the Cyclones inside the clubhouse to meet the players and the front office staff. I’ll never forget that day.

10) I think every closer in the majors enters the game with an intimidating song blaring out from the stadium PA. What song would be blasting from the speakers when you enter a game to close it out?

CM: I really don’t have one. I’m still trying to find “that one songâ€

My dude recently pitched in the Long Beach St. pro alumni versus the current guys game, and was the losing pitcher, getting shelled by the kiddies. He pitched one inning, giving up 4 hits, and 5 runs (4 earned). Don't know where he's slated to start this year. I still love you, C-Los.

C-Los made an appearance in an exhibition game for the B-Mets. Given his age (25 as of about 2 weeks ago), his success last year (almost 10K/per 9 IP, led the Mets minors in saves), Bingo seems a good spot for him. Maybe I'll try to get in touch with him again and ask him.

Hopefully he rocks the AA ranks for a bit and earns him a ticket to Norfolk sometime this year.

Shea in 2007 or bust!

Or '08, whatever.

Go C-Los!

My kid got held back and is repeating St. Lucie this year. He got a save in his first inning of work and even if he's not accelerating as fast as the other boys, I might just get me a "My kid was Player of the Month at St. Lucie" bumper sticker for the Astro van if he keeps this up.

C-Los is killing so far in St. Lucie.

4 appearances, 4 saves.

4 2/3 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. Get him to Binghamton to setup for Henry Owens NOW!!!

Muniz was just named to the FSL All-Star Team.

His numbers don't exactly scream All-Star, so I'm suspecting his 11 saves has a lot to do with it.

He's 2-2 with a 4.05 ERA (1.65 WHIP). He's given up 20 hits in 20 innings, striking out 17 and walking 13.

I did a Google search for "Carlos Muniz" images and came up with some hits and some misses.

Not my Carlos Muniz:

It looks like C-Los' development into a fearsome closer has continued as planned this year in high-A ball.

He's saved 30 St. Lucie victories in this, his All-Star season, and his numbers go like this heading into the home stretch:

4 wins, 3 defeats, 48.1 IP, 39 H, 17 BB, 44 K, 3.17 ERA, 1.16 WHIP.

Homeboy's gotta be in Binghamton next year. Gotta be.

A Boy Named Seo

Muniz finished with 31 regular season saves and then saved all five St. Lucie victories during their Championship run.

That's pretty fantastic.

Send him direct to Queens. Screw the already high Carlos Factor.

Carlos Muniz showed up at the pro alumni versus Cal State Long Beach game again this year. Last year he was torched and was the losing pitcher. This year he tossed a quiet scoreless inning, striking out one. New Met Jason Vargas also threw a scoreless inning for the alumns. The Pro's beat the Joe's 1-0.

Alright, alright, alright.

After a completely dominant spring for the Mets (one IP, zero runs, baby), my dude's now listed on the AAA Zephyrs roster. Coming off a 31-save season, I'd guess he'd enter the season as the closer and might get hisself a cup of coffee this year if all goes well.

He just turned 26 a couple weeks ago, so it's time to make a move.

Go, C-Los, go.

A Boy Named Seo

Not to be.

He's starting at B'ton, a jump from St. Lucie, where's he's spent most of the last 2 seasons. 6 K's in 3 IP so far.

C-ya soon, C-Los.

Muniz picked up his second save in as many chances tonight as the B-Mets shut down the Thunder of Trenton tonight in Eastern League action.

He had the Scarlet Knight family backing him in person tonight as he shut down Trenton in they house. Thanks again for the email update, SK!

Solid. Again.

He's consistently allowed less baserunners than IP and has almost a 3:1 KK/BB ratio. He's saved 76 minor league games now (not including his crazy playoff run last year, I don't think).

At 26 now, I don't think it's crazy to think he could provide a Juan Padilla-like surprise if called upon.

A month later and his numbers are just as sick. What's the dillio, Mets? Call this guy up... NOW!!!!

07 Splits.

Fares better against the righties, but still gives up less hits than IP against lefties and still K's lots of dudes.

By my count, he's got 170 appearances and 204.1 IP in 5 minor league seasons including this year. Turned 26 in March. Seasoning just right.

Tuesday, August 28, 2007 BREAKING: Muniz called up to Triple-A B-Mets closer Carlos Muniz was promoted to Triple-A New Orleans following Tuesday night's victory. Muniz was 2-4 on the season with 23 saves. But his numbers don't do him justice. For about a month span, he was absolutely dominant, recording 10 consecutive saves. He was automatic, the way Henry Owens was automatic for the B-Mets last season. He's also a genuinely good guy, one of the best in the clubhouse. "I'm exited - surprised and excited," Muniz said right after getting the news from manager Mako Oliveras. "I'm excited to go up to that level and play against that kind of competition." Why surprised? "I just figured I'd end the season here," Muniz said. "There's only seven or eight days left in the season, so I figured I'd finish out the year here. That's what I mean by surprised." posted by Brian Moritz at 10:29 PM

A handful of B-Mets will have to restock New Orleans in the post-season, to replace the Zephs called up to the Mets.

I know the Mets don't go crazy with the September call-ups, but I wouldn't mind seeing Muniz's stay in N.O. be just a layover on the way to NY. I think they could really use him. Either way, this is the highest spot on the organization ladder he's been to, so I'm happy for him.

Getting primed for another go at the big club, sez Daily News.

C-Los is kicking ass like he does.

20 IP, 14 H, 4 ER, 8 BB, 17 K, 1.80 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 5 games saved.

Whose spot, you ask? Aaron Heilman, they say.

We'll see.

A Boy Named Seo

A year since my last update. C-Los has already had a few stints with the big club, but just 'cause he graduated and I kicked his ass out already, doesn't mean I don't still love him, and he can't come back home when the world out there gets a little tough.

Back in AAA Buffalo, he's gotten rocked like never before and sent to the DL with a strained pitching shoulder.

Take it easy, son. Rest up. Regain your strength. Then get dudes out again like you do and we'll see you in Queens in September.

Chin up.

Good boy.
