Yancy predicted in this thread.

Me, I'd bet (and this can go in the Prediction Forum) that Bret Boone never plays a single game for the Mets. That's why I don't care much one way or the other about this move. I'm hoping that, if he makes the team, he does it on merit, and instead of blocking Keppinger and/or Hernandez, he can serve as a mentor for them.

Good call, Yancy.

What I'm wondering is what would have happened if Boone, instead of announcing he was burnt out, passionless and steroidless in early March, had gone through the motions, eked out a few hits, and waited for the Mets to see that he no longer had the fire or the 'roids? He did the Mets a huge favor by self-assessing with such brutal frankness, but could they have told the difference between a passionless vet and a useful vet? I will go out on a limb and predict the Mets will break north with at least one veteran who is as devoid of passion, steroids and talent as Boone, and the Mets will spend at least half the season defensively claiming that this guy will come around, give him time ,he always gets off to a slow start, bbbyyy...They're far more comfortable trusting the long list of past stats than trusting their own lying eyes.
