Mike Piazza Update

Where's he going? What's he worth? To whom? Is he done? Things have been quiet regarding the new ex-Met, but some media outlets are staying on the case to get the most recent poop.

He's a traitor to his country.

He's a big fat pig.

Well, there is one deep thinker who compares him, and not unfavorably, to Jesus Christ.

]Having already been hit in the head, Piazza would have been well justified in charging the mound after Clemens threw the bat, yet he chose to walk away. At possibly the most emotionally charged moment of his life and on the biggest public stage imaginable, Mike Piazza chose to turn the other cheek, putting the good of his team ahead of any personal need for vengeance.

Instead of being applauded for this act of selflessness, stemming from one of the tenets of his own Catholic upbringing, Mike Piazza has been soundly villainized to this day; called every name in the book and had his manhood questioned.

"Soundly villainized?" Wow! How did I miss that?

On this rendition of the CPF, I've lost track of "Who is who they used to be"...I know that I am me...cooby is cooby...soupcan is soupcan...and a few others...

I'm starting to "guess" that Bret is "Sal"....based on the last 2 Piazza links that he provided...

not bad cooby...it's been warm but snowing today...how snow sticks when it is almost 40 degrees, I don't get but it's sticking and melting at the same time...We had something weird 2 days ago, called "Frozen Fog" according to the radio...it was foggy and then it got cold before the fog disapated so the trees looked like giant icicles...not looking forward to tomorrow morning when it's supposed to be about 10 degrees and the driveway will probably be a sheet of ice...

Thanks for the link of who's who...I'll check it out in a minute...first I want to try to figure out a few in my head before finding out the real answers...

we all have to be thinking it....
feeling it. (brets excused)

How when next season starts, and Piazza isnt there, we have begun a new chapter in Met history.

I might have missed it...but weren't there 2 different posters at metsonline that used a derivation of "jb"? I know the one was "old original jb" or "original jb"...but wasn't there someone using "jb" who was actually someone else?

old original jb
Jan 05 2006 10:23 PM
There was another jb

There was another jb with whom I got into some stupid argument which I now don't even remember what it was. I also have the vague sensation that it might have been someone here or someone who is still on the mofo under another name. Maybe it was you vt.

Anyway, I added "original" to jb, (just as we have Ray's, Original Ray's, Famous Original Ray's and Ray Bari--all of which don't hold a candle to real brick oven pizza.)

What a surprise....

Ms. Kelly's selective memory seems to have conveniently overlooked Piazza's altercation with the Dodgers Guillermo Mota in the spring of 2003.

What other player can say they have had a ball, bat and glove thrown at them from the pitchers' mound....

I remember that fight. D-Dad didn't feel like watching spring training, but I was baseball starved and we kept the TV on. That was surreal - Piazza looked like he was possessed or something!

Yet oddly, no punches have been thrown at him.

NEWS ITEM: Where is Mike Piazza?

That's the question a lot of GMs are asking this week. The assumption was he would have signed somewhere by now, but the Met catcher turned free agent is still looking for a job with spring training just six weeks away.

Piazza's best hope is with the Orioles, who are looking to trade Javy Lopez or else move him to first base. That would create an opening at the DH spot. The A's also are considering Piazza, but their first choice at DH is still the rehabbing Frank Thomas.

News Item from me: Where is Sam Champion?

I've not seen him on ABC news doing the weather in a while.

Yancy Street Gang
Jan 07 2006 10:12 PM

Carlos Beltran didn't sign last year until January 11, so I think it's a little too early for the tongues to be wagging about Piazza not being signed yet.

I bet that girl that Bret has been stalking is hoping that he's still unsigned on May 1.

I'm not surprised...I couldn't believe how many posters at various forums that I go to, thought that Omar should have offered Mikey 2 years for $10-12 Mil total...IMO, after the past 3 seasons, he's not even close to that value...JT Snow just signed for 1 year at 2 mil, while JT never had the power that Mikey had/has, right now, IMO he brings more value to a team...other than dingers, what does Mikey really offer? Before Mikey went on the dl, there was about a 6 week stretch where we had a much better winning percentage when Shrek was our starting catcher over when Mikey was our catcher...and it wasn't because Shrek was the world's greatest complete catcher, just that he had less "achillies heels"....

metirish
Jan 08 2006 10:16 PM

How easy we forget what Mikey did for this team, JT Snow should never be mentioned in the same breath as Piazza.

vtmet
Jan 08 2006 10:23 PM

We aren't talking about a 30 year old Mike Piazza...we're talking about a 37 year old catcher that was weak defensively when he was young and healthy...and hasn't been healthy enough in over 3 seasons to be productive offensively, other than hitting HRs...

metirish
Jan 08 2006 10:25 PM

True,Snow is no health freak either though, I agree he's a good pick up for Boston though.

Edgy DC
Jan 08 2006 10:33 PM

J.T. Snow will be 38 next season himself. And earned fewer win shares than Piazza, health or no.

I don't know who advocates offering Piazza $20-24 million, but that's not been going around here.

cooby
Jan 08 2006 10:34 PM

Prolly Ms. Kelly

metirish
Jan 08 2006 10:34 PM

Hell maybe Piazza goes to play in Italy or goes to Japan and plays for Bobby V.

vtmet
Jan 08 2006 10:37 PM

Edgy, that was $10-12 over 2 years, not $10-12 per season over 2 years...but still, IMO, way too much money...especially when based on his last 3 years production, I can't say that he earned that $45 mil that he made in that timeframe...

six weeks is a small sample size in that regard, besides which it might have helped that Piaza was catching Ishii while Castro was our best pitcher's personal caddy.

Edgy DC
Jan 08 2006 10:46 PM

Yup, you did say total.

But whether Piazza lived up to his last few year's salary is a very different question from what is a good price to offer him in 2006.

vtmet
Jan 08 2006 10:48 PM

she's not the only poster that I argued with over Leiter's & Franco's (lack of) value last year...between the buyout money and the Marlin's money, he was so far overpaid last year...especially when the season before he was talking about how shot his shoulder was and that doctors recommended surgery but he said he was too old for that...and then surprise, surprise Digger threw with the accuracy of a blown out shoulder...

actually last time that I went thru that sample group, Piazza was catching Pedro much more often than Castro was (and those were the games that the Mets were losing, despite Pedro pitching)...

cooby
Jan 08 2006 10:53 PM

Two points:

1) I am not about to start a Ms. Kelly bashing discussion, so calm down Edgy

2) I know I hate Al Leiter more than anybody else on this board does, for reasons even I can't pinpoint (except his pitching)

but anybody who championed for Leiter to return to the Mets after last season is just deranged.

Piazza, whatever, whether he stayed or left was okay with me.

merely coincidence? It's next to impossible to prove what results a pitcher would have had if a different "thought process" was behind the dish calling the pitches...one thing that I like about Castro and even when Jason Phillips would catch, is that their pitch calling wasn't as predictable as Piazza's was...I get so frustrated watching a Mets pitcher get a head in the count 0-2 or 1-2 and then Piazza would just keep calling for pitches low and away, at least 6 inches off the plate, until the count was full...whereas, Castro/Phillips would come after the batter a little more, calling for some inside pitches before going outside to keep the batters at a disadvantage...I don't know if you still have Pedro's opening day start from last year, but I just watched it about a month ago...in that first inning where Pedro gave up 3 runs, he was ahead in the count either 0-2 or 1-2 to all 3 batters that got hits that inning (and scored), and then after the bomb by Dunn, Pedro appeared to started throwing what he wanted instead of what Piazza wanted...

metirish
Jan 08 2006 11:29 PM

Pedro calls his own pitches, no matter who caught him he had problems with what they were calling.

vtmet
Jan 08 2006 11:40 PM

I seem to remember Jason Varitek doing Pedro's pitching in Boston...I think that first inning in Cinci., woke his ass up though...
