Building Miniwolf's Music Library

ScarletKnight41

seawolf mentioned that he's building a music library for his baby-on-the-way, so I thought we should start a thread with suggestions for him (this way, the regular music thread won't be overrun by kiddie choices).

I'll start with this -

Golden Slumbers - A Father's Lullabye

Some really great smooth jazz artists contributed to this CD - you can check out samples on the link.

Thanks for the help. I also got the complete oeuvre of Schoolhouse Rock, along with "No!" (TMBG's first children's album). The second -- "Here Come The ABCs" -- is on its way.

Keep in mind that any song that your kid likes is going to be heard over and over and over. At home and in the car.

Don't buy anything that's likely to drive you insane.

My granddaughter is three, and for a year has liked the music from Wizzard of Oz. She hasn't gotten tired of it yet (but we have)
To broaden the child's musical horizons, I'd suggest a good narrated Peter and the Wolf.

Get to know Laurie Berkner's cd catalog.

If you've never heard of her, you will. Trust me.

Upon understanding and belief, the greatest kid music band in history is Trout Fishing In America. They're a folk duo consisting of a really tall guy and a really short guy.

Check iTunes for "18 wheels on the big rig"

That's why I'm staying away from anything in the following categories:

1) Anything sung by kids.
2) Anything involving large purple dinosaurs.
3) Anything that starts with "W" and rhymes with "Jiggles."
4) Any song with the word "Bitches" in the title.

Things that are generally okay:

1) Ballady songs sung by rock bands (I'm going to burn a disc or two of these).
2) Anything involving Jim Henson (Muppets, Fraggle Rock, Sesame Street).
3) Meet The Mets.

I got one of those They Might Be Giants CD/books for my Godson last year. He's 3 1/2 and doesn't like bed time, so I hooked him up with "Bed, Bed, Bed". It's got 4 different stories with illustrations by the band IIRC, and 4 songs to go along with the stories, including the show-stopping finale "Bed, Bed, Bed!". I read the book to him and we sang the bed time song and he got psyched to go to sleep exactly once. It's still a cool book. This kid just doesn't like bedtime.

For what it's worth, my four-year-old daughter heard the Temptations singing "My Girl" on Letterman the other day, and she said it was "beautiful" and, "it made my heart dance."

She never says stuff like that, so either she heard somebody else say something similar earlier in the day, or it really made her heart dance.

That was because I didn't join them in singing it that night. When I did sing it with them one night many years ago in Connecticut, my voice nearly cleared the place out.

Don't be so sure (well, at least about the first three). Certain CDs were like valium for my kids, including one by the dreaded purple dinosaur, and another one from the dreaded "KidSongs" series. Believe me, you'll take all the peace and serenity you can get...Wiggles, Barney or not.

I shudder at the memory that my daughter loved a Raffy Songs for Kids CD. But it kept her calm. Now, at age 6, she bounces around the room to "Vertigo".

This successor series to the Tiny Toons had funny, funny stuff.

Come for the sentimentality of "Load Out." Stay for the David Lindley falsetto on "Stay."

The kiddies dig the falsetto.

3rd Generation Mole is partial to "Purple People Eater."

Well, if its a lil boy,chk this out.

I used to sing this to my son when he was a baby, and I recorded a version of it.

Its called Little Cowboy. Songs about a minute long.

Not only am I singing that and playing the guitar, I also did all the ooooooo-laaaa-laaaas and the horsey hoofs(with my tongue, lol).

How about this line of clothing from metalbabies.com?

If nothing else, I have to get the AC/DC one. I also have to get the "Toys In The Attic" one that Hot Topic sells.

My assistant's wife had a baby this summer. Since they live in Queens I thought it appropriate to buy the little tyke a baby-sized Ramones t-shirt. Apparently, it was a big hit.

I can't find my other "gonna have a baby" thread, so I'll stick this here.

We finished Miniwolf's room. Photos here:

The "art wall." Note the Geneseo pennant (go Blue Knights!), Mets bear, and "PEANUT" blocks.

The baseball card frame. Top row: Mookie, Mex, Kid, El Sid, K-Mac. Second row: Wright, Floyd, Pedro, Beltran, Reyes. Third row: Seaver, Harrelson, Mazzilli, Kranepool, Ryan. Fourth row: Nails, Piazza, Leiter, Fonzie, Franco. Looking for a Tug McGraw card to replace Mazz. Eventually this will be surrounded by pennants and other baseball memorabilia; I don't have any pennants yet, though. Soon.

Mets blanket, Mr. Met Mobile, and a perfectly-drawn Home Run Apple and Mets hat on the chalkboard-paint closet doors.

Anyone else have one of those little Mets squeaky puppets back in the day? I loved that thing. Unfortunately, (a) it doesn't squeak any more, and (b) it's pretty mangy, so Ms. Wolf won't let me play with the baby with it. So Met Mutt is up on a shelf.

One song Mini-Field will never hear is "My Grandfather's Clock".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Grandfather's_Clock

I remember learning this song in elementary school and feeling depressed by it. I mean, we are talking about a really depressing song if you can make an 8 year old start thinking about his mortality. I didn't even know the last verse until I looked it up on wikipedia. What a terrible song.

sharpie

I think we had to suffer through it on a Pete Seegar album. Yes, "My Grandfather's Clock" is an awful song.
