Looking for something else, I came across this blog in which various bozos give their list of. the best rock covers of all time.Well, I figure our bozos are at least as interesting as their bozos. So what about it?

Janis' "Me and Bobby McGee" is a cover -- that would have to go pretty high on the list. And Hendrix' "All Along the Watchtower."

My favorite cover ever was in about 1977, when Santana did a terrific cover of the Zombies "She's Not There", which time has forgotten, but I have not.

Then there's Grand Funk's "Locomotion", which beats out Little Eva. Don't even talk to me about that Kylie person.

Anybody who claims an allegiance to the Isley's "Twist and Shout" is lyin'.

The Clash's "I Fought the Law" is wunnerful, but so is the original.

Most covers today are ugly little things, because they're cynically little maneuvers aimed at market expansion.

Some songs, like "Knock on Wood," "Tears of a Clown," and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" get covered over and over without ever being hurt. These are called good songs.

Cake's version of "I Will Survive".
Social Distortion covering Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire".Mike Ness has a great voice for the song.
Red Hot Chili Peppers did a pretty awesome cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground".

"I Will Survive" does NOT work with a male voice. It just doesn't.

I like all the versions of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door".

I like Cake's version too, much better than the original.

The Sponges heard on the car radio yesterday, The First Cut Is the Deepest, a Rod Stewart song covered by Sheryl Crow. The Mrs. said that the cover was better than the original. I agreed.

I love "Me and Bobby McGee", too. Kris wrote a few great songs that got more notoriety when somebody else played them. Willie did a couple of great rendidtions of Kris' songs. "Help Me Make It Through The Night" might be my favorite.

Willie's done a ton of covers I loved (and been covered a million times, too). "Georgia On My Mind". Ray Charles made it famous. Louis Armstrong did it, too, and Willie's is right up there with both of them, if you ask me.

I agree with the Ryan Adams cover of the Oasis song. I hate those surly pricks from Oasis and Ryan (who's a surly prick himself) made me really love this song. And the Nirvana covers from the "Unplugged" album were all great. I guess I'd be partial to the Bowie and Meatpuppets covers.

Some of my other favorites:

Deftones - "No Ordinary Love" (Sade)
Wilco - "Be Not So Fearful" (Bill Fay) Beautiful song. Only heard it live. I've linked the original.
Gary Jules - "Mad World"(Tears For Fears) Off the Donnie Darko soundtrack.
Sun Kil Moon - "Neverending Math Equation" (Modest Mouse) I never really gave a good listen to Modest Mouse until I heard this album of MM covers. It's called "Tiny Cities" and it's super.
Iron & Wine - "Such Great Heights" (Postal Service) I think this became an M&M commercial, but I still like it.
Smashing Pumpkins - "Landslide" (Fleetwood Mac) Never liked Smashing Pumpkins at all, but loved this cover.
Rufus Wainwright - "Across The Universe" (a couple of guys named Lennon and McCartney). Got to be the toughest band to cover, but this one and a few others on the "I am Sam" soundtrack were pretty good.

Emmy Lou Harris also did a bang-up Beatles cover, "For No One" off her "Pieces Of The Sky" record. Only have it on vinyl, though.

She worked with one of my favorite peeps of all time, Gram Parsons, and they both did a bunch of covers that were remarkable.

They teamed up to do "Love Hurts", and I'm not sure who did that song first, but their version was my favorite.

On "Sweetheart of the Rodeo", Gram also covered Dylan twice ("You Ain't Going Nowhere" and "Nothing Was Delivered"), The Louvin Brothers' "The Christian Life" and Woodie Guthrie's "Pretty Boy Floyd" and they're all fantastic. Great performer, great freaking album.

Gosh, I love Gram. He also did a version of Cash's "I Still Miss Someone" with the International Submarine Band that is one of my favorites, too.

Stewart's version is also a cover of the original recorded by Cat Stevens.

In fact, Rod's made quite a career of covering other artists' songs: Downtown Train (Tom Waits), This Old Heart of Mine (for which he got sued), First Cut is the Deepest, and his last few albums (Great American Song Books)

Good catch, Doc. That's what made me think of "Another Saturday Night"

Well if a discussion of Rod Stewart cover versions doesn't get GF212121 back here (he DESPISED Rod) then nothing will. I once told him that if he ever left again (he disappeared for a stretch at least once before) we'd just start trashing the alt-music scene to the point where his ears would start ringing and he'd be forced to respond.

Dylan covers are almost in a category all their own and could constitute their own thread

I also like the Santana version of 'She's Not There'

Tito Puente, after Santana covered "Oye Como Va," went through a period of being pissed off when people asked him to play "that Santana song." This period lasted just until he went to his mailbox and found the first royalty check for the Santana version. After that, he said, when someone asked him to play "Oye Como Va," he would say, "Oh, you mean that Santana song?"

I've never gotten the hullaballoo over Ryan Adam's cover of 'Wonderwall', it's terrible, I am biased as I really like Oasis...

Mary J Blige has a stunning version of U2's 'One' on her latest CD....

Somewhere in Answer/Ask (not that long ago) I did my top 10 Dylan covers list.

In only a few cases, however, Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower", Marianne Faithfull's "I'll Keep It With Mine", do I prefer the cover to the original.

The Bonzo Dog Band's cover of Monster Mash is way better than the original -- speeded up and sung by a certified madman.

Joe Cocker did some good covers, most obviously The Letter, Cry Me a River, With a Little Help From My Friends and Feelin' Alright.

The Who's cover of Summertime Blues.

The Allman Brothers doing Statesboro Blues. For that matter, Taj Mahal and Alice Stuart also did great versions of the song.

Lyle Lovett's version of Stand By Your Man.

Joe Cocker's "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" is also great, I like it better than the Abbey Road version.

Not a bad version, but I prefer the Youngblood's cover of it.

A "who would ever think of doing this?" but effective: Wilson Pickett's cover of the Archies' "Sugar Sugar."

There's a great country cover of Breakin the Law, by The Cooters?
