CPF Annual Spring Training Meeting

KC
Jan 06 2006 01:53 PM

It's time to start thinking about the annual cpf meeting again, boys and girls.
We need to pick a date in mid to late February and a place to tie on the ol'
feed bag and swill a few pints. A little backround, the spring training meeting
originated as the holiday meeting and then changed a few years ago. It's held
on a Sat or Sun afternoon and has been located at both Virgil's BBQ (off of
Times Sqaure) and The Acme Bar & Grill (in Soho). I think it would be nice to
try something different so feel free to throw ideas out. Everyone is invited, es-
pecially newer posters. We have yet to bite any attendees (without asking
permission first). There's usually a Mets related raffle and good chatter about
how the Mets will kick ass this year (except for Sal who will remind us the
pitching staff if old and there are too many old bench players taking up AB's
from the young pups) and a pleasant time is had by all.

Let's keep this thread active so it doesn't have to get a sticky. I hate stickys.

I'm outta town the weekends of Feb 18-19 and 25-26. School is out in NY (and NJ I think) so I would think it might be hard on a lot of people those weekends. Howabout the weekend of March 4-5?

ScarletKnight41
Jan 06 2006 02:12 PM

I'm good any weekend past President's Day. I'm supposed to run a 5K on March 18, but I can skip that in favor of meeting up with you guys. March 25 is bad for D-Dad, but I can make it that day.

TheOldMole
Jan 06 2006 04:24 PM

Don't suppose you'd consider having it upstate?

Willets Point
Jan 06 2006 04:34 PM

In all likelihood I won't be able to attend due to the travel involved, but if youse agree upon a date I'll see if I can make it.

Later in March is better for me, with baby due in mid-February. Perhaps MiniWolf will even join us, if he's up to it.

I'm in Boston March 1-5 for our Annual Conference.

Mid to late March is best for me too.

Mole, we should cook up some kind of summer get together up there. I
have yet to see Opus. We stopped in on a whim once and found signs that
there was a private party that day so wandered off to Woodstock for lunch.

ScarletKnight41
Jan 06 2006 05:23 PM

Kase - that's a great idea for a summer weekend.

Mole - are there any nice hotels near Opus?

If you make it in late in March sometime I might just be tempted to swing by.

ScarletKnight41
Jan 07 2006 12:40 PM

March 4th is now a bad day for me.

The rest of March is still good, though.

TheOldMole
Jan 07 2006 01:15 PM

We could do it at Mohonk.

I can probably make it into the city. If we do it the end of March we can combine it with my birthday.

I must be sick. I briefly started checking my schedule to see if I could attend and make a weekend of it. Then I came to my senses and realized that it's roughly a 10 hour drive to New York.

I'm afraid I'll be with you in spirit only. I'll save my northward venture for a game and hopefully some tailgating at Shea.

Edgy DC

Heavy agreement on the idea of a gathering at Opus 40.

Wow, and I was discouraged by a measly 4 hour drive

Well, if Mole is cooking at least there won't be any Lebanon Bologna Crepes.

There is a place on 7th ave, around 48th St, called TONIC, aka THE MET LOUNGE, and its got pretty good pub food with alot of big screen TVs tuned to sports. They've got a 2nd floor with an area good for large groups.

I'd recommend it, for one of the mid-late March weekends (3/18-19 or 3/25-26).

How about Sun 3/20 - the day before SPRING officially begins. 1pm at TONIC.

Or anybody else got any bright ideas?

sharpie
Jan 09 2006 02:45 PM

Sunday is the 19th. I've been to Tonic for a corporate party. Not a bad space but I didn't get to try their usual food.

Vic Sage
Jan 09 2006 05:54 PM

their food is slightly-above-average bar food.
i meant sunday 3/19

KC
Jan 09 2006 07:17 PM

3/19 is perfect for me and I'm cool with trying Tonic - since it's two months
away maybe I'll check the joint out. There seems to be a decent interest in
late March - maybe this will be the quickest decision made for a meeting.

Chime in people, if there isn't a large problem with posters with 3/19 we
should probably roll with it.

ScarletKnight41
Jan 09 2006 07:23 PM

March 19 works for me.

Willets Point
Jan 09 2006 11:04 PM

I have an obligation on March 19th so I can't come. Otherwise, I'd love to come down and make a weekend of it and go to the parade on Friday. Alas.

Johnny Dickshot
Jan 09 2006 11:23 PM

3/19, Tonic. See yas there

ScarletKnight41

Bring your friend. It's a long way from Tipperary - he could use the diversion.

Jan 11 2006 10:07 PM

Holy crap, I had a couple of $7 beers in that bar last summer. This is the place right?

Willets Point
Jan 11 2006 10:08 PM

Can you imagine it the other way around? You go visit your friend in Ireland and he says "Hey, Sunday we're going down to the pub to hang out with these people I know from the internet to talk about our favorite hurling club." That would certainly be a diversion.

metirish
Jan 11 2006 10:10 PM

HAHAHA...true, I'm sure he would love to meet everyone, as would I.$7 beers?,well it's NYC.

KC
Jan 11 2006 10:19 PM

I can live with 20 oz pints of something good for $7, but if it's $7 bottles of
Bud there has to be pole dancing strippers.

Rockin' Doc
Jan 11 2006 11:29 PM

I can generally get two pitchers of Yuengling, Tecate or Dos Equis for $7 at my favorite Mexican restaurant. No wonder I need to lose weight.

Mar 09 2006 08:18 PM

Anyone else wanna chime in here or via PM? I know some people don't like
to commit a whole ten days in advance but it would be helpful if we can make
reservations a week in advance so we can get two or three tables without having
some hungover waitress having to figure out what to do with us that day.

Having her do tables means she ain't getting us beers.

I'm sorry that I haven't been able to commit to this yet. Problem is finding a babysitter (my wife is working on Sunday) for my soon-to-be three year old. I might be able to pull it off, but it doesn't look promising at this point. I hope to be there.

Count is 15-20. They said we don't need reservations for early Sunday. Let's

the first one there and will be in an orange Mets shirt.

Vic Sage

KC
Mar 17 2006 10:51 AM

that there will be some kids so we can try and get them to a table quickly.

It was a nice time at Tonic, despite the late scratches. In attendance were -

Kase
4 out of 5 Diamond Knights
Vic Sage & Family
Sharpie with son Lenny Harris
Rotblatt
JD and Mrs. Dickshot

We had to scramble and push together some bar tables when we learned that the upstairs lounge was closed for brunch, but ultimately everything worked out. The menu was diverse, and everyone seemed to have a good time. Thanks to Kase for organizing the event :)

KC
Mar 19 2006 06:35 PM

Always good to see CPFr's in person - and great meeting new ones in Rot-
blatt and Lenny (who was sporting a Ramones shirt). Sorry the others who
were on the fence couldn't make it (I hope Edge and LF aren't on the DL long).

Sam Ash being around the corner from the restaurant was a plus too - a wind-
fall practice amp purchase day as well - I'm a happy clam - KB's thrilled too
that I'm in distortion mode.

ScarletKnight41

It only went on about 15 minutes more. Lenny Harris and I both had a swell time. He was a last minute attendee (his Mets shirts were dirty so a shout-out to the Ramones was the best option). The Mets game coming on to the TV above the table was a plus.
