Re: IGT, Game 7, 4/8 NYM@ATL

ATL to honor Henry Aaron's 715th tonight on the 40th anniversary of the home run that passed Babe Ruth. Lord, that was a big deal. With the possible exception of Ripken supplanting Gehrig with 2,131, I'm thinking there was no chase of a record or milestone in my now 46 seasons as a baseball fan that elicited more attention and awe.

Others that come to mind in terms of massive scale:

• McGwire surpassing Maris (Bonds taking both HR records didn't quite have the same snap)
• Hershiser surpassing Drysdale
• Carew and Brett pursuing .400
• Brock surpassing Wills for SBs in a season, Henderson passing Brock for everything SB-related
• Rose surpassing Cobb
• Rose chasing DiMaggio (imagine somebody getting really close)

Maybe a little less overwhelming, at least to my thinking: Ryan striking out more than Koufax; Cabrera nailing down 1st Triple Crown in 45 years; Ichiro supplanting Sisler...probably harder to impress the nation today given that there are fewer readily identifiable "forever" numbers like 714 and 2,130; less of America is aware of everything (or anything) going on in baseball; and the cynicism that makes nothing particularly impressive to too many people.

But Aaron topping Ruth -- wow. It's still amazing to consider.

Re: IGT, Game 7, 4/8 NYM@ATL

Good summary. Only one I might add to the list (to the bottom, maybe) is Rickey's 130 stolen bases.

Rod Carew and George Brett entering September with a real crack at .400 was something. Boggs and Gwynn made runs, but they were climbing up from the .350s as August faded. Carew and Brett were up there in the .400 stratosphere and it was just heroic watching them try to hang in there.

Re: IGT, Game 7, 4/8 NYM@ATL

Don't forget Ripken passing Gehrig.

When I was a kid, after Aaron had passed Ruth, I decided that there were three more Yankee records I wanted to see broken in my lifetime: Gehrig's consecutive game streak, Maris' 61 homers, and DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak.

Two of the three have fallen.

Re: IGT, Game 7, 4/8 NYM@ATL

The fact that the hype over it carried over the offseason in time for Topps to make a series of "Hank Aaron Specials" and for ABC to arrange a Monday Night Baseball broadcast and stuff helped to pump it up. Elements of it were very forward-y, as baseball marketing would go, but it seemed genuine.

Maybe this and not the 75 World Series was the first real "Night Game" victory.

Knowing what we know now the two yahoos who catch up with Hank at third base must have been terrifying. Could you imagine how we'd react to fans interfering with a baseball scene like that today.

I remember being excited about Rod Carew possibly hitting 400.

That it carried over--Aaron had ended the previous season with 713--also gave rise to a controversy about whether the Braves should be allowed to rig it so Hank broke the record at home.
Atlanta made it clear that they had every intention of having the record broken in Fulton County but the Braves opened the season with 3 games in Cincinnati and the pre-announcement didn't sit well with Bowie Kuhn. After much back and forth, it was decided that Aaron would be in the starting lineup for at least 2 of the 3 games in Cincy. Hank HR'd for record-tying #714 not just on opening day but in his very first AB of the season making even Atlanta's compromise plan look kind of dicey. He then went 0-2 + a walk for the rest of game 1, sat out game 2, and then went 0-3 in game 3 as Braves execs let out a big sigh of relief -- remember that that franchise didn't draw flies in those days.

#715 came in Game 4, the Atlanta home opener, in Hank's 2nd AB (4th inning).

Safe!!! Suck it braves!!!

That took about 3-4 minutes... i see some absolute shit challenges coming in the near future from managers who just took the lead and want to buy time for the closer to warm up

Yea, w/o this review bidness I'd have wanted him to yell until he did get tossed. These first two, nice, but I fear the bite someday.

That's probably a big part of why challenges late in the game are at the umps' discretion.

Nice to get five pitchers into the Braves' pen in game one.

Mets have lost Pedro Beato twice (not signing him after the draft and then trying to get him thru waivers). Both times it was the cause of intense wailing from Met fans, but they've yet to be burned by it.

Im more inclined to push my starter with a smaller lead if he is pitching well. No reason to stretch him up 4runs, even our clownpen need to be able to hold that lead for 2 innings

Can't say enough about the hugeness of that RBI hit off Beat-O. I believe it was an 0-2 count.

Also, Terry KILLING it in the replay booth. That's a part of our biggest rallies!

Re: IGT, Game 7, 4/8 NYM@ATL

- Murphy was at least partially to blame for Valverde's error. That's the SS play there and I think Murph being on the base also screwed him up a bit. First he double-clutched, then he threw wide and to the wrong side of the base.

- What scares you about this Braves offense, especially in a game like this, is that, as streaky as they are, EVERY ONE of the guys in their lineup (and several on the bench) have not just the ability to hit the ball out of the park but have double-digit/year type HR power. That's quite a weapon to have as Yanx fans are going to find out due to their LACK OF that weapon after taking it for granted for so long.

Oh, and I need a drink!

I never thought it would play out like this.

It's like a game show, The Call Is Right, and we kinda think we know the answer, cause they show us, and then we wait on the real answer, which in both these cases, I think, were actual close calls that even on replay might have gone either way.

At least before we saw the Atlanta feed replay. But even that..

Re: IGT, Game 7, 4/8 NYM@ATL

Personally, I wouldn't have overturned that call based on what I saw.
But there's no harm in Terry asking (since he couldn't force the issue as it was past the 6th inning)

The first call we got overturned I was jumping up and down screaming for the replay as it first happened. That one was a lot more obvious.

Re: IGT, Game 7, 4/8 NYM@ATL

You think if it looks like a tie, the home office is supposed to defer to the runner (as is traditional), or the ump on the field (like a court of appeals deferring to the lower court in the absence of clear evidence demanding an overturn)?

I wonder what their guidance is at the home office. It would be kind of cool if it wasn't the latter. Or even if the guy making the final call doesn't even necessarily know what the original call was?

Re: IGT, Game 7, 4/8 NYM@ATL

Supposedly there should be convincing evidence that the call was wrong before you overturn it. Tonight's example was so far from convincing that I didn't think it would be reversed.

But that's part of what's proven to be a problem with replay as it's existed in other sports: you can say all you want that it'll only be used for 'X', or that it's purpose is only to overturn obvious incorrect calls, or that reviews will be limited to a certain amount of time; but that's all like trying to stay slightly pregnant. Once you get into that box then it's only natural that it starts to be used as if a microscope to examine the smallest minutia.
I only hope we don't get to the place where football is now where the refs acknowledge that the receiver has the ball in his arms but they then spend five minutes trying to determine whether it's moving around within his arms too much and therefore he never has "control". If some replay determines that a runner was safe on 1st because, even though the ball hit the mitt prior to the foot hitting the base, because the ball was moving from the pocket to the web when the foot came down they're going to rule the runner safe, I'm going to have a problem.
