Mets Count 2014

Benjamin Grimm
Mar 31 2014 07:55 AM

The all-time number of Mets players was 968 at the close of the 2013 season. We'll probably fall a little short of getting to 1,000 this year, but we're almost certain to get there sometime in 2015.

Unless I'm overlooking someone, there are five players on the big league roster who have never before played for the Mets: Chris Young, Granderson, Colon, Valverde, and Lannan, so we'll soon be at 973.

Re: Mets Count 2014

So what are the rules again?
Is it highest spot in the batting order who's considered "first" - or does the fact that they're the home team and who gets the ball hit to them first play a role?

Re: Mets Count 2014

I think it should go by the lineup position, but I don't think that's universally accepted. My feeling is that they're officially in the game when they're announced, and the pregame announcements go in lineup order. Fielding a ground ball doesn't put a player "in the game".

Re: Mets Count 2014

With Young not in the lineup, looks like that debate will be moot for now. I think it's been [crossout:2k9njvhr]a while[/crossout:2k9njvhr] since there was only one new Met debut in the starting lineup of a new season.

Edit: not that long actually. Met debuts in opening day lineups, recent vintage:

2013 - Cowgill, Byrd, Buck
2012 - Torres
2011 - Emaus, Harris
2010 - Barajas, Cora
2009 - None
2008 - Schneider, Church, Santana
2007 - Alou
2006 - LoDuca, Delgado, Nady
2005 - Mientkiewicz, Martinez
2004 - Gutierrez, Matsui, Cameron, Garcia

Re: Mets Count 2014

Actually, not that long at all. The last time there was only one new Met making his Opening Day debut in the starting lineup was 2012, with Andres Torres. In 2009, there was nobody!

Other years with only one:
2007 Moises Alou
1998 Tim Spehr
1997 John Olerud
1991 Vince Coleman
1990 Mike Marshall
1987 Kevin McReynolds
1982 George Foster
1980 Jerry Morales
1973 Felix Millan
1971 Bob Aspromonte
1970 Joe Foy
1969 Rod Gaspar

Other years with none: 2001, 1989, 1988, 1986, 1984, 1983, 1981, 1977, 1976, 1974

Re: Mets Count 2014

If the Mets are at home, and therefore opening on defense, their appearance is in order of the defensive numbers.

If they are on the road, and opening on the place, their appearance in the batting order should designate their debuts, until they take the field.

I predict we get to 1,000 by next Friday.

Met Count Central is predicting Binghamton righthander Cody Satterwhite, currently burning up the Eastern League with a 0.89 ERA in 20 1/3 innings.

Cody and Mallory got married in jeans and cowboy boots.

Re: Mets Count 2014

Figure on another handful this season, including September callups. That brings us to 985 or so. Add another handful in the offseason, and we'll probably hit 1000 some time late next season, probably with someone we claim off waivers in September for the playoff drive.

Re: Mets Count 2014

14 Mets made debuts from this date forward in 2013, 12 from this date forward in 2012, 8 from this date forward in 2011. Predicting Mr. 1,000 makes himself known to us no later than trade deadline 2015, probably before All-Star break.

He'll probably be some barely-hanging-on veteran. My guess is that number 1000 will be a 39-year-old relief pitcher.

That may be the best, if the cruelest, way to go. I was thinking they might stuff deGrom back down for a spin.

They kinda maybe oughta liberate Matsuzaka to return to the pen and give the start to Eveplum. Also a cruel solution.

Re: Mets Count 2014

In light of the two weekend promotions, Met Count Central is now projecting Bronx-born Binghamton righthander Jonathan Velasquez as the future [crossout:38q964rv]Met2K[/crossout:38q964rv] Met1K. Jonathan is currently 3-2 with a 3.52 in 23 innings over 19 games for the B-Mets. He has struck out 22 and walked only four, for a 0.91 WHIP that'll play anywhere.

Some solid Seaveriffic drop-and-drive form on the hill, too.

If he's gonna be the 2000th Met, then there's going to be a lot of churn over the next year or two.

I'd be way more impressed if Met Count Central accurately predicted as Mr. 1K a minor leaguer in someone ELSE'S system who we're going to pick up in trade (or sign as a minor-league FA) between now and 1000.
