A Crap Do You Give?

Folks out there roasting the Mets for inviting Mayor De Blasio to throw the opening day pitch.

Is this something I should be animated about?

Who roasting? Why?

Mayors always throw out the first pitch.

I don't see why there should be any controversy about this.

I guess the Met blogosphere are big charter school advocates?

Tracky with the shametweet:

Andy Martino ?@MartinoNYDN 12m
#Mets fans on a roll. Booed mayor, apparently forgetting he was on mound with 6 small children affected by East Harlem explosion. Nice.

I get the feeling that if there had been no vocal reaction, there might have been a smartassy hizzoner Tweet there in its place. Tracky is as the wind blows. (Or, rather, the pithiest counter to said wind-blowing.)

saw one or two tweets before hand a little pissy about it. But first pitch was invented for politicians.

that said, had no idea he was so disliked. Perhaps it's not unreasonable to not subject fans to someone they hate? but then, this isn't Rivera.

He's a Red Sox fan, and that's the problem. I don't think this was much about politics.

I would rend to agree , he has not done much wrong since taking office I think, with the amount of snow he did good.....trying to fix the schools, free UPK, all good things....shit, Boss Tweed would get booed nowadays.

It's pretty reasonable to ask fans to be decent gracious for a few moments. Doubly so since there were children entering the field with him who just had a chunk of their neighborhood blow up. Tracky's being priggy here but he's not wrong.

Looks like he's gearing up to throw the old 'palm ball'.
Or, seeing as how he's a politician, it's probably a greased palm ball.

Re: A Crap Do You Give?

FWIW, he threw a hell of a strike. (Outside half of plate, not-at-all-grooved.)

Also, according to the public-radio crowd I had on in the car this morning, virtually EVERY mayor we've had who's done this has been booed at some point during their tenure.

Certainly. So fanzz decrying that the owners don't recognize the history of the team are, in this case, failing to recognize that history themselves.

Re: A Crap Do You Give?

I forget who said it at the tailgate that I was at, that
it would have been nice to have someone from Kiner's
family to throw out the first pitch.

Being mayor of anything sucks. They vote you in and then
hate and blame until your ride is over.

Re: A Crap Do You Give?

Still... booing in esse is just kinda dumb and, in this case, misplaced. Booing isn't for mayors (that's what disinterested, half-assed applause is for). Booing should be reserved for when you're drunk, and it's the seventh, and our guys are losing, and there's somebody five rows ahead wearing a Braves hat and JESUS CHRIST WE'RE NOT EVEN PLAYING THE BRAVES.

Not a big boo-er ... funny that it sounds like boor, maybe
for a reason.

It certainly would have, but the pre-game festivities were drunk with Kinerliness. Many (not in your party, I imagine) tried to frame it as a slight.

Mleph.

Gerrie Coetzee --- that guy was a big Boer.

props to the guy in the Mariners Cano jersey though. Because clearly, Mets Opening Day is where that's needed.

Re: A Crap Do You Give?

They booed Giuiliani relentlessly every year. Didn't help that he made no bones about the fact that he was a died-in-the-wool Yankme fan. Some even booed him in the first game after 9/11.

If I saw Rudy on the street right now I'd be tempted to boo him.

Re: A Crap Do You Give?

I think some just boo politicians because they think they should. Saying, in effect, 'I think this guy suxx' makes them feel better than saying 'I have no opinion'.
It's like the people who never vote but then justify with the motto that 'Both sides suck' - as if they actually examine the evidence in each and every race and not only find the major candidates wanting but also decide that both a vote for the lesser of evils or one for a minority candidate aren't even the slightest bit better than none at all. Non-voters never bothered me (I sometimes think fewer people should) just the ones who didn't do so while acting as if they're somehow above such silliness.

Well, I am attempting to track first-pitch throwers all season, and so far we're 0-1 with the mayor, so..

Re: A Crap Do You Give?

Least he didn't break his catcher's ankle. Oh, dear.

Opening day pitchers:

City: New York
Opponent: Washington
Pitcher: Nu mayor Bill de Blasio, accompanied by children from East Harlem whose neighborhood was damaged by an explosion.
Reaction: Boos
Pitch: Steeeee-rike
Result: Mets lose, 9-7

City: Pittsburgh
Opponent: Chicago (N)
Pitcher: Scott Kiner, son of Hall-of-Famer Ralph Kiner
Reaction: Cheers (boos saved for Barry Bonds' return)
Pitch: Hard to say, but he threw from the rubber.

Result: Pittsburgh wins, 1-0 on a walkoff homer by Neil Walker.

What went down in Detroit?

Re: A Crap Do You Give?

My main problem with De Blasio throwing out the first pitch was it didn't follow the distribution of World Series rings.
