Re: Liver/Crane: I'm Not Half the Championship I Used to Be

HE SAID, HE SAID

He said "I know that I’ll like being a Met
I know that I’ll never be sad"
And he's promised to give us a tour of the Bronx

We said "Why’d you put those plugs in your ears
Plugs so you can drown out the boos
And we’re still waiting on that tour of the Bronx"

He said "You won’t wipe the smile from my face"
We said "No, no, no, you're wrong
When you were a boy
We smeared Tommy Seaver
We smeared Cleon Jones"

We said "Even though you know what you know
Pittsburgh ain’t like playing at Shea
And we’re making you feel like Kitty Genovese"

He said "You don't understand what I said"
We said "No, no, no, you're wrong
When you botched that play
Way out there in right
You called up and cried"

We said "Even though you know what you know
We’ll make sure you’re ready to leave
'Cause you're pissing us off and you’re not very good."

He said "I know thatI I’ll like being a Met
I know that I’ll never be sad
I know that I’ll like being a Met..."

Re: Liver/Crane: I'm Not Half the Championship I Used to Be

Player: Johan Santana
Song: A Day In The Life

A Shea in the Life (September 27, 2008)

I went to Shea today once more
Stadium near the Fair since Sixty-Four
And under skies quite overcast
Johan just had to last
Given our pitching staff

They blew big leads both left and right
There was no confidence they’d save a game
From far above I watched the pen
Praying the gate stayed shut
Everyone was really sure they couldn’t handle Heilman

I hoped at Shea today once more
The slumping Mets could defeat Florida
Up in my Deck I found it nice
That old Scott Scheoeneweis
Had not warmed up twice

They must not
Touuuuu-uuuuch
Jooooo-oooo
Haaaaa-aaaan

Short rest
He didn’t care
Gave Ayala such a stare
Admonished Joe Smith and Brian Stokes
“Go and take a seat with those other blokes”

Achy knee
But he threw fine
Strode the mound for the full nine
Limited the Fish to scattered hits
Jerry kept his wits and didn’t make a switch

Aahhhh...
Aahhhh-aahhhh

Aahhhh...
Aahhhh-aahhhh

Aahhhh...

Aahhhh...
Aahhhh-aahhhh

Aahhhh...
Aahhhhhhhhh!

I cheered at Shea today once more
Santana kept our playoff hopes alive
And though our hopes are rather small
The Mets are not yet done
Now there’s good reason to be back at Shea tomorrow at one

They did not
Touuuuuu-uuuch
Jooooo-oooo
Haaaaaa-aaan

That She Said She Said/Good Day Sunshine photo is one I've never seen.

Great job by both.

We said "Even though you know what you know
Pittsburgh ain’t like playing at Shea
And we’re making you feel like Kitty Genovese"

This was the lolest line but Shea gets my vote. Writing about Bobby Bonehead is a thankless task.

Re: Liver/Crane: I'm Not Half the Championship I Used to Be

I liked the Kitty Genovese line, too. But the old-timey, Casey-at-the-Batness woven throughout the "A Day in the Life" one-- "Short rest/He didn't care/Gave Ayala such a stare"-- won me over a little more.

One more time-- as always-- Johan carries the day.

Congrats G-Fafif!

Good job to all - there were some inspired entries here written within quite limiting constraints.

What was so limiting? In the old school contests, you'd start with three, four or five players, and if you were lucky, you'd get one star or one player with a rich or colorful history. Here you had like a dozen or so players to choose from in the first round and an open category in the second round. I think a few others said that there weren't enough categories in the first round, which I didn't understand.

What am I missing?

Re: Liver/Crane: I'm Not Half the Championship I Used to Be

I think it's difficult having both a limited number of subjects and a limited number of available tunes.

Obviously G-Fafif and sharpie rose to the challenge; I'm tipping my cap to them.

Re: Liver/Crane: I'm Not Half the Championship I Used to Be

I had actually thought about using "A Day in the Life" (about Pat Zachry, though) but then reverted to my original thought that I would only use less familiar songs for this particular challenge.

Grats to the G-Man.

Re: Liver/Crane: I'm Not Half the Championship I Used to Be

Not to criticize as I truly lurve Liverpool to Cranepool a lot, but with a finite set of tunes to select from having a fininite set of topics caused a little bit of a creative issue, I think that was all pointed out above.

Also, scheduling it so soon after the other tourney may have increased the burnout rate. In retrospect we should have gone right into the Scrabble Invitational or something.

Criticize all you want. What would be the point of having this forum if you couldn't criticize anything?

Totally agree. People barely even voted, let alone competed.

I see your point (and TMF's), but I'm not so sure that I agree. I thought it would've been mainly the available topics, both in number and in type that would've determined difficulty. I thought that it would've been just as easy to choose from a few dozen songs as from an unlimited amount, especially when the few dozen songs are as well known as the Beatles catalog.

The selection business, even with limitations, were not a problem for me (easy to say since I bowed out of the last one, I guess). But the one-two punch got me in the gut.

Thanks all. Fab work from sharpie (whose talents are worthy of more Grammys than his namesakes the B Sharps collected in their heyday) and those who were on hand in the first round. Novel and appropriate concept from batmags, whose execution of this and the previous parodistic contest deserves its own round of applause.

Happy 50th, Lads and Shea, wherever you are!
