IGT 04/25 - Fishsticks at Metropolitans

d'Kong76
Apr 25 2014 09:52 AM

Henderson Alvarez, RHP
1-2, 2.66 ERA

Alvarez was perfect for five innings in his last start. He ended up throwing a two-hit shutout against the Mariners.
The right-hander needed 90 pitches to become Miami's first starter to go the distance this season.

Zack Wheeler, RHP
1-2, 4.63 ERA

Wheeler entered this season hoping to improve his control and efficiency, but he has struggled in both areas through
two starts. Still, the righty has kept his team in the game each time he has pitched, with three quality starts and one
near-miss.

Granderson – 9

Murphy – 4
Young – 8
Duda – 3
d’Arnaud – 2
Tejada – 6
Wheeler – 1

Re: IGT 04/25 - Fishsticks at Metropolitans

Ugh. Wright with an error on a wicked liner that hits off his heel in the 1st. That had to hurt. The Fishy lead off batter ends up on second.

Wheeler don't let it bother him. Ks Ozuna.
Gets Stanton on a ground out. Man on third.

And then a walk. Bad! Bad Zack! We don't want you throwing a billion pitches to get to the 6th.

1st & 3rd, 2 out.

Ks Salty!yay!

For a slider-speed bat, Travie's doing a heck of a job turning around fastballs of late.

And added bonus: stealz!

Hmm, that was some energy there. Travis powers one over the infield for a single and then steals second. Niice.

Random quotes of the game™:

Murphy's stolen base was his 26th consecutive attempt without getting caught, tying the second longest streak in #Mets history. #NYMvsMIA

Thanks to back-to-back RBI hits from Wright and Murphy tonight, the #Mets, rather improbably, have held a lead in 20 of their 23 games.

I suppose that's a bullet dodged with the loud Stanton out to end the inning. But this lead suddenly feels a lot more tenuous... not just because of the run scored, but because of the way Wheeler's gotten shaky this last frame.

Like his hitting, Ike's fielding didn't seem as good in recent years as it was at the beginning.

WOWZERS!!!

THOUGHTS ON THE GAME!!!!

1) Someone asked when Q got in there: he was double-switched in when Germen came in the game

2) Did Germen get rattled at the strike three/3rd-out call he didn't get on Salty? Kinda looks that way, huh?

3) d'Arnaud bunting? Not my favorite move but it's tough to say it was the wrong one and it did make more sense because of Abreu being on the bench

4) Abreu: That's the EXACT situation you got him for and his AB there was perfect ... only the result wasn't.

5) Sending Duda: I'm not so sure he would have been safe had Yelich not fallen but you gotta send him there regardless. Yeah he had to go a bit sideways to get the ball but he still got it on just one hop and wasn't very deep when he was about to unleash

6) PH-ing Kirk for EYJ: I liked it. EY would have had to hit LH where he's not so good, plus his specialty this season has been getting on base but not necessarily via a hit which is what we needed there. Plus better chance for power.

7) NOT Sending Q: Right move IMO. Yeah something could have gone wrong with the relay but on balls that don't even get to the wall and then are right back into the cut-off that's a tall order. Also, once the game was already tied you're in a less desperate situation.

8) Five straight LHBs against side-arming Cishek is certainly the way you want to do it. Only d'Arnaud that inning wasn't and that's another argument for him Sac-B-ing

9) The Yanx are losing by like two touchdowns to Anaheim

Yeah, credit to Terry on this one. He also bunted with the righthanded d'Arnie. I would have pinch-run Nieuewie for Duda (would I ever), but by not doing so, Terry avoided having the fake lefty (Young, Jr.) up there with the winning run on.

He also dodged the prospect of scoring the tying run but having to going to extras with Young at second.

Nieuwie really seems to have a lot of big hits in the ninth and later.

I wondered what he was doing so shallow too, but I guess daring a 40 y/o who's been out of the game for over a year to go deep to the opposite field isn't such a bad play on the Marlins' part.
Certainly staved off their execution ... even if only temporarily (heh, heh, heh)

Re: IGT 04/25 - Fishsticks at Metropolitans

I hadn't realized Niuewenhuis was a pinch-hitter. Big move by Terry, and a terrific turn at bat for Niuewy, whom I might not have even had on the team but seems to be always in the middle of late-inning stuff.

Apr 25 2014 08:35 PM
Re: IGT 04/25 - Fishsticks at Metropolitans

I tend to poo-poo lefty/righty stuff a bit, so I'm okay with leaving Germen in, but I feel like Collins goes to the lefty there 18/19 times and that's basically why. As good as Germen's been lately, I don't know that he's earned the trust to go after lefties in tight games?

But the 9th? I definitely would've pinch run. I don't know that I would've done Kirk though, because of the weak hitters coming up. I'm always tempted to use a pitcher in those situations. Maybe Colon?

Omar is crap anyway so I don't think there's any situation you can credit putting him in, but I wonder if Terry was thinking about the possibility of Cishek and getting the lefty in there, or if it was all just about getting Germen the second inning. That probably means he'd already determined Germen was going to face the lefties.

But, LolMarlins. they're now 2-11 against the NL East and 1-9 on the road.

Re: IGT 04/25 - Fishsticks at Metropolitans

When that ball jumped off Abreu's bat I was sure the game was tied. I too, with little trust in Granderson coming through, would have sent Quintanilla home. Things turned out okay. I was surprised at how much faith I had in Nieuwenhuis when he was batting.

Re: IGT 04/25 - Fishsticks at Metropolitans

I immediately thought about PR-ing for Duda (although was resisting) but credit to Terry for seeing far enough ahead that he preferred to have a PH on hand for the pitcher's slot (Abreu) and again for EYJ since he had to stick with Q
Those moves were more important than the PR

Re: IGT 04/25 - Fishsticks at Metropolitans

I've been thinking in my post-game tubbie and I got the impression that Terry and his coaches have put a LOT of thought into how they would go after Cishek.

I mean, he not only had a pile of lefties lined up there, but at least three of them (Duda, Nieuwie, and Granderson) with a classic lefthanded loop swing that can go down and get the low pitch and negate the sink from the sidearming righty. Duda, Nieuwie, and Abreu all went the other way.

I was OK with leaving Germen in there too - he actually got hit harder in his first inning than in his second (at least up to the point where the HRs started flying).
My only question was that why was Rice even up and throwing if not to shut down the inning with 3 straight LH bats coming up. Decoy?

And, yes, Q was in there strictly because the 9th slot was leading off. It would very much surprise me if he was thinking about Cishek there (although maybe as a bonus reason).

I see your act, Ceets. "Optimistic" Mets fan when they're doomed, Pessimistic when things are looking up.

Omar was a double switch which allowed Germen to get that second inning. I think if Salty had got on base in any other manner than a home run, he would have switched to Rice for the the next guy. I thought Salty was struck out for sure and lost a bit of my energy when he wasn't too.

Yeah, playing matchups with the bases empty is usually overkill (unless it's an All-Star homerun hitter up there). I guess it would have been right tonight, with hindsight, but generally, it's overkill.

Say what you will about our offense, but, well... we certainly do seem to have read the book on this division's closers, haven't we?

Mark Simon reports that Cishek had face 17 lefties so far this year and allowed hits to exactly none of them.

Until tonight.
