KTE -- Marlins -- 4/25-27

Despite the Marlins being a division rival, I don’t really know the them too well.

What I do know

* Giancarlo Stanton & Jose Fernandez are REAL good - although we’re going to miss Fernandez in this series

* somehow this year’s Marlins are 2nd in the NL in RS/G after not just being dead last in 2013 but so bad that they were behind the team in 14th place (Cubs) by the length of a Giancarlo Stanton HR (more than 1/2 R/G)

* Erratic team so far in 2014: Won 5 of first 6, then lost 8 straight, then followed that by winning 4 of 5

* Just finished up losing 2 of 3 during a tough series in Atlanta: a 1-0 win via a 2-hit, 14-K game by Fernandez was sandwiched in between a 4-2 loss as the result of a 10th inning 2R HR by Evan Gattis, and a 3-1 loss due to an 8th inning 2R PH 2B by Evan Gattis

* They got to enjoy a a Thursday off in NYC while the Mets & Cards were finishing up their business

So what else do I need to know??

I thought this was my baby.

Um, Jose Fernandez is really good. We're gonna miss him. But not miss him, you know?

I thought we had talked about in-division opponents all being group projects due to the volume of them, but if you want to take this one and run with it, go for it.
I was merely attempting to kick things off by pointing out that I DON'T know much about them.

Re: KTE -- Marlins -- 4/25-27

OK, let's try it this way:

What they got, they got a catcher name-a "Salty"!
Supposed to be an all-star but predictions turned out faulty!
He's got a bunch of walks and he's hitting kind of decent!
But he's probably not as good as what he's done for them of recent!

His thoughts have been in Boston, but he's playing where he comes from!
A chance to go back home, well then you take that chance, you dum-dum!
He grew up in Palm Beach and now he's playing for Miami!
The park has lots of seating for his Papi and his Mami!

Stick with the nineties vein.

They were down on their firstbaseman
Staring at this yellow-shirted guy
Garrett Jones struck up a conversation at the winter meetings
He took grounders while his agent made a pitch
He's suddenly beautiful
And the Fish need something beautiful
Convinced themselves he was beautiful
Last year's numbers should be a warning
Sha la la la la la la la yeah.. uh huh, yeah...
Shut up, Maria!
Garrett Jones is a disciple of the Ultimate Warrior
He plays full-throttle, Mr. Jones
Believe in him
Fish believe in anything
'Cause the Fish they want a fan base who believes
Yeah...

Mr. Jones and me
Tell each other fairy tales
And we stare at the scouts from better teams
"He's looking at you.
Ah, no, no, he's looking at me."
Dreaming now of the bright lights
While living down in the barrio
When Pittsburgh doesn't you
You sure can't be a Yankee

Re: KTE -- Marlins -- 4/25-27

Pitching Match-ups

Friday - 7:10
Henderson Alvarez (24 y/o) - Zack Wheeler
Alvarez is part of the contingent that came in from Toronto in the big Jose Reyes/Josh Johnson deal.
He's coming off a terrific start vs Seattle (a CG 2-hitter), but his other three starts this year were nothing to write home about: 14-2/3, 25 Hits, 12 Runs (7 earned)

Saturday - 7:10 (Gee, and no one's coming to our games because it's so cold!!)
Kevin Slowey (30) - Jennry Mejia
Also a former Blue Jay, although Slowey came to Florida via a one-year deal as a FA prior to 2013 after missing off a 2012, and then re-upped w/the Fish again this off-season.
This will be his 2nd start of the year to go with 4 relief outings.

Sunday - 1:10
Tom Kohler (27) - Dillon Gee
New Rochelle HS and Stonybrook U product is off to a good start this season: 2-1 in 4 starts; 2.13 ERA; 1.05 WHiP

Not me. I wish Fernandez was pitching this series. Especially since I don't expect these Mets to win half their games anyways. If Fernandez pitched, then maybe I'd watch a whole game. In fact, if Fernandez pitched, I'd even pay to see that Mets game in person.

No, no, he don't walk
The English, he don't talk
Look for power, you look in the wrong place
But the glove on this Cubano!
And, ho, this boy can throw
Got range like Maytag, but yo,
He can't steal a base

Here comes the Adeiny, shortstopper
Cuba's Hechevarria, shortstopper
Excuse the slappy-battiness, shortstopper
You can't walk off the isle, shortstopper

Re: KTE -- Marlins -- 4/25-27

The Miami Marlins were tied for the worst road record in the majors last year, and so far they're the sole owners of that dubious distinction in 2014.
A comeback victory may have them feeling they can change that.
A day after the Marlins completed an impressive rally, Tom Koehler looks to continue his strong start and help Miami win its first road series of the season Sunday against the New York Mets.
Miami (11-13) finished at the bottom of the NL East at 62-100 last year, partly due to a 26-55 mark on the road. The Marlins have been even worse on the road so far in 2014, dropping nine of 11.
They seemed headed for another road defeat Saturday, but a five-run sixth inning combined with a homer from Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the 10th gave them a 7-6 win.
"We haven't felt the pressure of, 'Hey, we're on the road, we're out of this,'" Saltalamacchia told the team's official website. "We haven't felt that, which is a good thing for this team. We keep battling. We've been swinging the bats real well."
The Marlins, though, are hitting .223 while averaging 2.9 runs on the road compared to .293 and 5.8 at home.
Koehler (2-1, 2.13 ERA) is surely aware of that difference.
The right-hander has been backed by 18 total runs in his victories -- both at home -- but has received just two in his other two outings, which resulted in road defeats for Miami.
That was the case again Monday, when Koehler allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings while not getting a decision in a 4-2 loss at Atlanta.
"He gave us exactly what we needed," manager Mike Redmond said of Koehler, who's limited opponents to a .198 average. "We needed a good start, and he gave it to us. ... It was a great effort for him, and we weren't able to get him the win. He deserved it."
Poor run support is precisely why Koehler is just 1-1 in seven games -- four starts -- against the Mets. A Bronx native who attended nearby Stony Brook, Koehler has been backed by seven total runs in those meetings, undermining his 2.35 ERA and 18 consecutive scoreless innings over his last three starts.
He held the Mets (13-11) to just three hits in eight innings of a 1-0 win at Citi FIeld on Sept. 15.
New York will counter with Dillon Gee (1-1, 3.58), who can empathize with Koehler's lack of support. The right-hander only allowed two runs in the fourth inning before leaving after the sixth Tuesday, but he was charged with the 3-0 loss to St. Louis.
"I was happy with the way I limited the damage in that inning," Gee said of getting out of the jam by getting the final two outs with runners on second and third. "That could have gotten pretty ugly, and in the past it has. I think it was a big step for me."
Gee is 2-0 with a 3.09 ERA in four career starts against the Marlins, going 1-0 in two home meetings while holding them to one run while fanning 14 batters in 13 1/3 innings.
Bobby Abreu will try to build on his two-run homer from Saturday, his first in the majors since 2012.
