Wasn't Watching

It's been a busy few months. New job. Travel. A foot injury. Family stuff. Life. The only baseball of any kind I've seen since 2013 was Thursday night, when I was in North Carolina for work and saw the Delmarva Shorebirds eat up the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Other than that, nuthin.

Also, I've cut my cable cord. I may give in and rewire, but for now if it's not on PIX and I'm not at Citi Field, I'm not watching it.

I've been looking at the box scores. I see that Lagares is our best hitter but he's on the DL. Wright is struggling a bit. Murphy is hitting .280, all singles. The free agent pickup is on the interstate. So's Tejada. So's d'Arnaud.

Mejia is our best pitcher, but he's missing his next start. Niese and Gee are Niese and Gee, Wheeler is wild, Parnell is gone, and the rest of the bullpen sux.

Ike was traded for another guy named Zack.

And, I think, the more things change...

So, you've been watching. Well, some of you have. Maybe you went to sleep halfway through the West Coast games, but you've seen more than me. What do these guys really look like? Are they improving? Shot at .500 for real? Is Duda cutting it at first? Are the hitters really that bad? Is this the year that Mejia emerges? What's going on behind the boxscores?

I try not to make too many judgements about the a season until around Memorial Day, but this sums up the first three weeks IMO.

So far, they don't look too much different than the teams of the past few seasons. Streaky...an offense that can completely disappear...lots of strikeouts at the plate...trouble winning at home...decent starting pitching...suspect bullpen...many guys with a little promise...stars on the DL...the lions share of hope is still in the minors...free agent acquisitions scuffling...YYYBBB.

If you're going to games at the Citi, let me know if you want to go together some time.

And Welcome Back!

They have a shot to be OK and maybe more than that. Consider they've won a few series without any real contributions ft Wright or Grandyman and still haven't gotten the full complement of guys out there yet. Bench looks useful. Bullpen scary as usual. Really I'd be ready for any combat if they could somehow upgrade Tejada.

Between the strikeouts and the holy-hell-how-did-he-miss-that-hanger missed opportunities, the hitters have been worse than you've imagined; for long stretches of time, it's actually been eyebleeding anti-fun to watch them when they're batting. Duda's a notable exception.
