Re: Where Mets Rank (2014)

Wow, this thread has had very little activity this year.

Time to post some updates.

Daniel Murphy has been moving up a few of the Mets all-time lists.

DOUBLES
Murphy has bumped Mookie Wilson out of the top ten and is only one behind Darryl Strawberry.

1. David Wright 371
2. Ed Kranepool 225
3. José Reyes 222
4. Howard Johnson 214
5. Edgardo Alfonzo 212
6. Carlos Beltran 208
7. Mike Piazza 193
8. Darryl Strawberry 187
9. Daniel Murphy 186
10. Cleon Jones 182
11. Mookie Wilson 170

HITS
Murphy recently passed Lee Mazzilli to move into 14th place. If he plays a full season with the Mets in 2015, the Mets may finally reach the point where it requires 1,000 hits to be in the top ten. Meanwhile, David Wright looks like he'll get to the 1,700-hit mark this year. The big 2,000 looks to be about two years away.

1. David Wright 1680
2. Ed Kranepool 1418
3. José Reyes 1300
4. Cleon Jones 1188
5. Edgardo Alfonzo 1136
6. Mookie Wilson 1112
7. Bud Harrelson 1029
8. Mike Piazza 1028
9. Darryl Strawberry 1025
10. Howard Johnson 997
11. Jerry Grote 994
12. Keith Hernandez 939

14. Daniel Murphy 802
15. Lee Mazzilli 796
16. Kevin McReynolds 791
17. Felix Millan 743
18. Rey Ordóñez 720
19. Rusty Staub 709
20. John Stearns 695
21. Wally Backman 670
22. Wayne Garrett 667

AT BATS
Murphy is in 18th place right now, but he can still move up a couple of more notches this season, and, if he's with the Mets through all of next season, can pass Keith Hernandez and move into 12th place. David Wright apparently became the all-time at-bats king this season, and nobody seems to have noticed.

1. David Wright 5621
2. Ed Kranepool 5436
3. José Reyes 4453
4. Bud Harrelson 4390
5. Cleon Jones 4223
6. Mookie Wilson 4027
7. Howard Johnson 3968
8. Darryl Strawberry 3903
9. Edgardo Alfonzo 3897
10. Jerry Grote 3881
11. Mike Piazza 3478
12. Keith Hernandez 3164
13. Carlos Beltran 3133
14. Lee Mazzilli 3013
15. Rey Ordóñez 2937
16. Kevin McReynolds 2910
17. Wayne Garrett 2817
18. Daniel Murphy 2742
19. John Stearns 2679
20. Felix Millan 2677

25. John Milner 2389
26. George Foster 2389
27. Wally Backman 2369
28. Dave Kingman 2323

Also, Jonathon Niese has been around for a while now too. Let's see where he is on some of the Mets all-time lists:

2. Dwight Gooden 157
3. Jerry Koosman 140

17. John Franco 48
18. Jesse Orosco 47
19. Tug McGraw 47
20. Johan Santana 46

STRIKEOUTS
Niese just moved into the top ten yesterday! And nobody knew it! Probably not even Craig Swan, who is currently clinging to a tie for 10th place. Next up is Bobby Jones (the one from Fresno), and then Jon Matlack, still far in the distance.

1. Tom Seaver 2541
2. Dwight Gooden 1875

Would be funny if Swan did know it, watching at home and cursing every strike. "No, dammit! That pitch was outside!"

Re: Where Mets Rank (2014)

Look at that tier behind Matlack. There's as much distance between him in eighth and Jones in ninth as there is between Jones in ninth and Jim McAndrew in 31st. It's like, "Only the gods may enter this stratosphere, son."

Makes a small but decent case in itself for Matlack as Mets Hall-of-Famer.

Re: Where Mets Rank (2014)

Interestingly with the exception of briefly sharing No. 44 (Cone, Darling) and 16 (Gooden, Cone) the Top 18 Met strikeout hurlers all have unique uni numbers (19 & 20/21, Glavine & Orosco, were both 47s.

Re: Where Mets Rank (2014)

One thing this increasingly lost season for Wright is doing as far as 'Where Mets Rank' is concerned is to postpone the previously assumed 2015 season as the year David was to pass Straw as the all-time NYM HR leader.
After starting 2014 32 HRs away from tying the mark, he's still 24 back as we head to September and has hit only 26 over the last 1-3/4 seasons combined. In fact he's only hit as many as 25 once in the last six seasons meaning that what once seemed inevitable by late 2014/early 2015 is now looking like 2016 at the earliest.

Mejia takes sole possession of the coveted 17th place all-time career list. Any prediction as to where he will finish? That projection I post isn't particularly helpful, because it's based on his rate over the course of the season, for much of which he wasn't yet the go-to save guy, or even a reliever.

Re: Where Mets Rank (2014)

Saves are a a funny thing to track, because by a curious tradition, unlike any other statistic, only one guy is allowed to purse them at a time. So two seasons on the job as a designated closer and you have a reasonably good chance of joining the team's all-time top ten.

Team Wins in a Season vs. the Mets
...
T4) Florida Marlins, 2004: 15 (11 saves by Benitez)

I remember this stat/year specifically for a conversation that WFAN yakker Jody McDonald had with a Miami writer/broadcaster (I forget which) telling him how much they were going to regret having Benitez on their team.
- and then when he got off to a good start Jody Mac had to revise he prediction about how he'd fall apart when he faced the Mets, that seeing 'New York' on unis was going to be more than he could handle
- and then when he was near-perfect in a series in Miami he got revised further to he'd fall apart as soon as he pitched a series IN New York

And on it went. But even though he gave himself about three different ways to say 'I told ya so', Armando skunked him at every turn.
