Richard Nixon, Secret Weapon

With the opening of the exhibit Presidents and Baseball at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum, the Nixon Foundation published this blog post about the president's long history as a fan.

Included is this cool letter to Straw:

The two homers referenced in the letter were on September 8 and 9, both losses to Montreal. The team would win the final game of the series on the 10th, the day this letter is dated, before entering into the weird four-game losing streak that delayed their clinching the division.

He, of course, heeded the advice enough to save three more homers for the post-season, including a big one for game seven of the World Series.

Also in that blog post is a clip of Nixon being interviewed on the Mets post-game show in 1987, hosted not by Ralph, but by FX Healy.

That's pretty cool. I had a Sunday ticket plan back in the 80's, and I'd frequently see Nixon sitting in a front-row box just to the right of the Mets dugout.

The man was a fan. I always thought that he would have been an interesting choice for Baseball Commissioner.

And he was at the Terry Pendelton game....

I was at that game too. September 11 was a dark day, well before 2001.

I was sitting not all that far from Nixon at one game (late 80s I'm guessing) when he was sitting near Mookie's wife in a game where Mookie HR'd
The celebratory black woman in proximity to the ever-stoic Nixon was an amusing sight.

I saw Nixon walking on a relatively empty street. I was about three feet from the former President. This was about a year or two before he died.

I saw Frank Langella as Nixon in FROST/NIXON, both on Broadway and on film, Anthony Hopkins in Oliver Stone's NIXON, Jon Cusack in THE BUTLER, John Tobin in TRANSFORMERS: DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, Stuart Milligan in 2 episodes of DR. WHO, Robert Wisden in WATCHMEN, Dan Ackyroyd on numerous episodes of SNL, and Dan Hedaya in DICK.

Does that count?

I read a thread about Richard Nixon on the Pool once.
