Postseason Rosters Card Quiz

Inspired by the Topps Archives posting of who among the 1986ers can be found on cardboard as Mets, I give you the following quiz when it comes to Met related postseason teams:

First up, Toppless Mets for the 1973 NL Champions *Note, because the stats on the back, and, for the most part, the pictures reflect the prior year, I use the next year's sets for the bulk team set building:

Of the 27 Mets listed on their Postseason Roster (using the NLCS programs from both Riverfront and Shea as sources), only 5, well TECHNICALLY 4, do not have a solo card as a Met in the 1974 Topps set, name them.

Standard 1 guess per player rules.

Willie Mays?

Re: Postseason Rosters Card Quiz

Yup. And that is the technical one since he is prominently swinging away in one of the Postseason/World Series cards.

His last base set card as an active player was in the 1973 set.

Mets only used six pitchers in that series, so the remaining
three are pitchers? Not sure if I just gave a hint or asked for
help haha.

I refuse to participate in this quiz because I think the idea of putting out pictures of topless Mets is cheap exploitation and I won't be a part of it.
Plus I bet it was all fucking Jeff's idea.

Now if they wanted to put out cards of topless Met wives that'd be a different story.
Hey, in the fight against exploitation, you can't do it all so sometimes you have to pick your battles.

I'm guessing Jim Gosger. Guessing, cause I'm not sure if he was on the post-season roster. I know he didn't have a card in '74. In fact, he's Toppless as a Met altogether, despite playing for the Mets in three different seasons.

Re: Postseason Rosters Card Quiz

Going back to the 1973 squad, some hints on the three left:

One pitcher is well known in Met circles and is in plenty of early 1970s Met sets.

The other pitcher appears in several early 1970s Topps set with another franchise, but not officially as a Met until the 1991 massive All-Time Roster set that was a stadium give away sponsored by The Wiz. No idea whom he is represented as with FaFiF's Jason's Holy Books.

And finally an infielder whom 1973 was his only cup of MLB coffee, and as far as TradingCardDB.com seems to indicate has never been on a trading card.

Re: Postseason Rosters Card Quiz

Lute Barnes never had a card. Phil Hennigan was on other Topps cards before his Met stint. I'm not sure if they were on the post-season roster, though. In fact, I'd be surprised to learn that they were on the post-season roster. I guess Yogi didn't go bench-deep in the post-season.* 'Cause judging by your quiz, there were several active Mets who never got off the bench in October.

*Well of course Yogi didn't. (See, e.g., "The George Stone Fiasco")

Nope, and nope.

No idea how this guy rated being on the PS roster sheet, must be because he was on the roster while Buddy or someone was on the DL.

17 position players listed, 6 did not play in the NLCS, only two, including the guy I'm looking, for did not see World Series action, and they were both missing from the NLCS playing records (so chances are he really wasn't on the eligible to play roster).

Also of the 10 pitchers 3, oddly enough all three pitchers involved in the quiz, did not see postseason action, with only one of the 7 other pitchers to miss a series, and that was the NLCS.

Answers to the other three 1973 Postseason Mets missing from the 1974 Topps Set:

Along with Seaver, Koosman, Jones, McGraw, Harrelson, Boswell, Garret, Grote, Dyer and Kranepool, one of the '69ners still with the club, finished out his Topps run with this card in the 1973 set:

Former Expo, but brought into New York in July of 1973, and would play his final MLB game in 1974. He did rate a card as an Expo from 1971-1973

Cardless infielder, brought up for a week or so while Bud Harrelson was on the DL in August, Brian Ostrosser

There'll always be a rule-breaker.

No takers on the last 1969er?

He does have a 1970 card, though with his logo scrubbed off of the cap, and listed as a Houston Astro:

As noted in the 1986 Topps Archive Collection thread, there is no Topps card of John Gibbons as a Met, though he is in the 1987 Donruss set.

Kevin Elster doesn't get his Topps rookie card until 1988

But he is in both the Donruss and Fleer 1987 set

and those are the only two postseason roster 1986ers not to have a 1987 Topps Card.

Re: Postseason Rosters Card Quiz

All 26 guys on the 1988 Mets Postseason Roster (NLCS program roster sheets list an DL'd Bobby Ojeda) are represented as Mets in the 1989 Topps set. Though during the season the Mets had their very first stadium giveaway trading card set, sponsored by Kahn's Hotdogs.

The set was given away early in the year, so obviously late-season acquisitions like Bob McClure are not in it, but other than McClure, the only other guys on the 1988 Postseason roster not in the set are Gregg Jefferies and Keith Miller.

Both would be in the 1989 set, though Miller in a one-time only "update" set that was given away late in 1989 that included Frank Viola. McClure would remain SGA Met-less, except of course for the massive all-time roster Wiz set in 1991.
