One Year Ago Today

I liked April 15th much better when I was just thinking about Jackie Robinson Day (since we usually file our taxes early, that deadline doesn't loom over our heads).

But one year ago was the Boston Marathon bombing.

I am a runner. I have run a marathon. I have lived in Boston and have raced in Boston (not the Marathon). I have a daughter who lives in the greater Boston area. I used to have to dodge the Marathon runners on Beacon Street in order to get home after school.

So this act of terrorism felt intensely personal, and hit me very hard. I still can't get my mind around those who were killed and maimed simply because they came out to cheer the runners on to the finish. It's unfathomable to me.

I didn't stop running, but for the first few months after the bombing it was in the back of my mind during races. I didn't want D-Dad to cheer me on because I was worried about his safety. I was incredibly jumpy.

I had also felt an intense need to run in Boston again, and thank to Willets and Mrs. Point I was able to do that in October. They kindly put me up in their home, and Mrs. Point and I ran a women's only 10K on Columbus Day. That was a big part of my personal healing process; it was helpful running in the City on that beautiful Monday.

I haven't raced much in 2014 yet due to the tough winter we have had, but I think having a little time off from the racing scene was a good thing for me. It was like my settings have rebooted - I ran two 5Ks this weekend wearing my Run to Home Base cap, but even with the anniversary on my mind the races felt normal once again. The security concerns aren't preoccupying my races anymore, and for that I am grateful.

Meanwhile, today is the one year anniversary. Next Monday is Patriots Day, and several of my friends will be running the Boston Marathon. Hopefully they will have a beautiful and safe day of running, and the only times people will need the medical tents will be for blisters and other similar maladies....

A lot of strong stuff there. Ending with the remarkable story of Rockin' Doc's friends.

In my mind, it feels like the anniversary will be on Monday rather than today, but there have a number of touching tributes today. I'm looking forward to cheering on the runners. I think it's going to be the biggest Patriots Day ever (in a good way).

Survivors, rescuers, first responders, and local leaders gather on the finish line.

If you're tracking a runner in Boston and want to see him/her finish the Marathon, you can watch the Finish Line Cam here.

Sox lose their Patriots Day game to Bal'mer, which leaves one remaining question: Who, aside from ESPN, thought it was a good idea to give these two teams the Sunday Night game prior to an 11 AM start the next day? The only "concession" was that the night game was moved up one hour to 7PM rather than 8. And none of this even mentions the idea of night games in the northeast in April.
I mean, I realize ESPN would rig things to get the Yanx and/or Sawx on EVERY Sunday throughout the season if they could [two weeks ago was Sox v Yanx, last night was Sox, next week will be Yanx] but wouldn't you think the Red Sox (not to mention the Player's Assoc) would have the ability to say "Fuck off" under these conditions? Or did Sawx mgmt actually want this one?

Re: One Year Ago Today

Yes, it was running. The drivers would ring the bell to encourage the runners as they drove by.
