I didn't know until the rash of TENTH ANNIVERSARY articles and retrospectives (at least a dozen in the last week or so) that the movie MEAN GIRLS was a major cultural touchstone in this country.

I mean, look, I realize that I was way out of the target demographic for this flick and all, but I don't think I even heard about it until years after it was out and even then it was only because Lohan was becoming such a mess by that point that that movie was brought up to show that there was actually a time before she was a human train wreck. But apparently MEAN GIRLS was THE culturally shared experience for the first decade of the 21st century with more quotable lines known to all than anything since maybe CASABLANCA, or at least since ANIMAL HOUSE.

I'd noticed that as well. I saw the movie years ago and even enjoyed it, but I don't know when/why it suddenly became such a..thing. It seems like the last year or two. I also always conflate it with John Tucker Must Die.

I think that new movie with the three women all sleeping with the same guy and conspiring against him is basically a grown up version of one of those two. Again, conflating.

Saw a preview of that last week, and it seemed weepingly bad. Probably one of the oldest and (and emptiest) comic themes there be.

My wife wants to see it, so I can report back if you like. (if we actually see it..best intentions, etc)

I kinda like Leslie Mann and as I said about Mean Girls, I do sorta enjoy the trope some if it's done right. As long as you don't really take yourself too seriously and mix in enough humor.

(checks) I AM conflating the movies. It's not Mean Girls it's John Tucker Must Die.

.Mean Girls deals more with the new kid trying to fit in makes real friends but ditches them to be popular but then realizes what's important trope. Produced by SNL's Lorne Michaels and written by Tina Fey, so that probably explains some of the cult following.

Anyway, yeah, it'll probably suck. Hoping for enough comedy that it'll at least have it's moments, but not hopeful.

Hey it (MG) may even be a good movie, I don't know. Never saw it and suspect I never will (like I said, was pretty much past the target demo before it ever hit).

It's just kind of weird to suddenly be swamped with articles telling me that something I was only passingly familiar with was a major cultural event worthy of numerous retrospectives and 'where are they now?' updates. That's something I expect maybe from the likes of VH-1 and those 'List' shows they used to do where the culture geeks there would declare every passing fad of their childhood to be a universal touchstone. But these 'Mean Girls' hosannas, in addition to coming out of the usual pop culture suspects, are also being done by the likes of the NY Times and Washington Post.

Mean Girls is a very funny and well done movie. It was Tina Fey's project and she's certainly become noted and influential in the ensuing decade. As for Lindsay Lohan, on the occasions when I do hear news of her latest scandal all I can think is that she's scuttled a promising career as a comic actress because she's good in this movie as well.

Mean Girls was a terrific movie, and it's a shame that Lohan became a train wreck. She was excellent in it.

But it's far less quotable than The Opposite of Sex

Lucia: You're probably a blessing in disguise. Fucking good disguise.
---
Dedee (who is pregnant): I'd like a Long Island iced tea, please.
Bill Truitt: Is that a good idea, for the baby?
Dedee: Oh, please. This baby owes its life to Long Island iced teas, if you know what I mean.
--------
[about marrying Matt]
Dedee: I just don't think it's something we should rush into.
Lucia: Oh, no, no. But bring another human life onto the planet - that's whim time.
--------
Lucia: Vagina, vagina, vagina. Does that word do anything for you?
Bill Truitt: I don't think it does much for anyone, gay or straight.
-------
Dedee: If you think I'm just plucky and scrappy and all I need is love, you're in over your heads. I don't have a heart of gold and I *don't* grow one later, OK? But relax. There's other people a lot nicer coming up - we call them "losers."
---
Dedee: God. How does a woman get so bitter?
Lucia: Observation.
---
Dedee: My mother was the kind of mother who always said she was her daughter's best friend. Whenever she did, I thought, "Great! Not only do I have a shitty mother, but my best friend's a loser bitch!"
----
Matt Mateo: I'm bisexual.
Lucia: Puh-lease! I went to a bar mitzvah once. That doesn't make me Jewish.

The Opposite of Sex gets at some weirdly profound stuff-- the nature of family, e.g.-- in a sidelong way, too. Love me some Don Roos (this, Love Field, Happy Endings).

One of the best things about Mean Girls, to my mind? It was an adaptation of a book... a how-to guide to teen behavior for parents.

Ha!

I still snicker that the father in the movie is the janitor from Scrubs.

I like how Frayed Knot has gone from not knowing much about this movie to having to make a poll about it. The power of Mean Girls.

I'd rank this movie as "Fetch".

Well I didn't actually make the poll, I just suggested that it be pulled out of the general purpose thread and given its own turf.
One of the mods poll-arized it.

It was a good film featuring a great cast of up-and-comers.

Re: Mean Girls (2004)

Mean Girls was ok, kind of formulaic and pounded its message in a little too hard.

Re: Mean Girls (2004)

I like this. I like this just fine-- clever take on the teen comedy, joke-a-minute in spots, fun stuff around the margins (Fey as the sympathetic teacher, Tim Meadows and Amy Poehler enjoying themselves a lot), and a heroine who's somewhat dynamic/complicated for this sort of venture. Heck, I'll watch half an hour here or there when I stumble on it.

But, four-star-- heck, four-and-a-HALF, for one-- people? JUSTIFY YO' PINION!
