IGT - May 5 - Mets at Marlins

Didn't we just play these scrubs? Whatever, just as long as we keep missing Jose Fernandez.

Tonight: Niese v. Nathan Eovaldi

Re: IGT - May 5 - Mets at Marlins

We did just play them although we have to do so this time in Miami where oddly they become an entirely different offensive team despite what seems to be a pitcher-firendly park.

Record:
H = 14-5
R = 2-10

Hitting:
H = .307/.370/.495
R = .215/.287/.333

RS/G:
H = 6.16
R = 2.67

XBH:
H = 3.79/G
R = 1.92/G

I know it's a small sample but those gaps are ridiculous. It's like they're the Bizarro-Mets.
Hell, they even somehow manage to strike out 35% less often: 7.21/G vs 11.17/G

They also pitch better at home [2.86 ERA vs 4.66] although that could at least partially explained by Jose Fernandez making 5 of his 7 starts at home so far (I wonder how many adjustments that team will make to skew things so that he gets the majority of his starts at home considering the effect it has on their attendance?).

Re: IGT - May 5 - Mets at Marlins

I can enjoy the conspiracy theories as much as anyone when it gives me a reason to berate my opponent.

The Dodgers accused the Marlins of stealing signs, even suggesting they've got a camera in that Home Run Thingie.

[crossout:37dji46c]They're also 14-5 at home and 2-10 on the road.[/crossout:37dji46c] (what he said)

Gary Cohen, when mentioning the story, hinted that the Rockies might do something in the christmas tree forest out in CF.

So let's see if the Marlins look like a different team shall we? (I think they'll destroy 'em honestly)

Should be fun times in the NL East this week with all teams within 1.5 games from top to bottom. Anyone can go from 1st to last or vice versa inside of two days.
So as we're battling it out in south Florida, Atlanta host the (currently .500) Cardinals, Philly welcomes the Jays, Nationals get the Dodgers in DC

This a serious "make a statement" week. Need at least four of these six.

Terry must have reason to think that Eovoldi is more vulnerable against LHBs as Wright & d'Arnaud are the only RHBs in the lineup.
But, yeah, that's a big outfield down there for the likes of Abreu and not your best CF

Some fine hit-scattering from Mr. Niese, who's looking very much in control. The pitch count-- 56 through 3-- is of mild concern.

Back-to-back hits to lead off? The Lefties have to hang something crooked on Eovaldi here.

It's not that EYJ can't field (or even that he over does it) it's just that he often plays so deep that he needs his speed to make up for it and makes catches like that more necessary than maybe they ought to be.

I used to think he did that because he sucked so bad at balls hit directly over his head. But he musta been working on that. Opening day he made a gem and that was directly over his head. If he no longer sucks at that type of fly, he should be playing in a little more.

On that catch earlier, he was flying so fast he coulda made a shoe string, IMO. Lesser chance to get by him tho, diving to it, well above the ground. I say however he's comfortable is okay w/me but if he's still playing that deep left like last season, yea, he should move it in. 'Lil bit.

Obviously the pen in general and DiceK in particular take the biggest lumps for this one, but once again we do the score early then try to sit on the lead thing. In this case there were two runs out of the first four batters but then just one for the rest of the game.

I'm so done with Dice K. I don't get it. He's clearly not ready or prepared for the bullpen and is seemingly warming up constantly throughout the game. If this is the role he can best help the team in, get him down in Vegas working on his warmup routine, or just designate him the closer so he knows roughly exactly when he's coming in.

And what happened to Germen? He was pitching pretty well, had a muck up against Atlanta and has been used sporadically since. He had a crappy game at home against the Marlins too when he gave up those home runs, but two of 12 bad appearances ain't too bad (and last night he really only gave up a grounder.) so why the sudden doghouse treatment? The bullpen sucks, use the guys that have been succeeding.

Well, there's a role for guys who've been starters all along but find themself on a staff where there is no room in the rotation or they are not quite up to the rotation's standards. This role is "long relief." But instead of using Matsuzaka and Torres in such a role, Terry has become enamored of them and used them as his righthanded setup guyzzz.

I think he'd be better advised to use Germen and Familia (and Valverde) in this role. As their position in the pen now is geared for neither high leverage nor long stints, they don't really have a role.

Yeah, I just meant that Matsuzaka doesn't seem to be prepared for the role they're seemingly using him in. So either figure that out or send him down to get better in the reliever mindset. This "Is he wearing a hat?" nonsense is rubbing me the wrong way.

I agree on Germen and Familia though. I'd like to see them get more innings. Valverde I'm not sure about but he's pitched twice in two weeks so clearly he should pitch at least a little bit more. Terry's flavor of the week bullpen management is a little grating sometimes.

Re: IGT - May 5 - Mets at Marlins

Well prior to yesterday DiceK was probably the best thing we had out of the pen (best ERA, WHiP, H/9, etc.].
Small sample to be sure but that's all we have on anybody in the pen at this point is small sample.

I would have preferred to stick with Niese going into the 8th--although the pitch count and a few hard hit balls in the 7th probably killed that idea in Terry's mind.
But once the decision was made to yank the starter I didn't have a problem with who we went with. It's not like Germen, Familia, Farnsworth, Valverde, et al haven't had their moments this year also or that it was somehow pre-knowable that Matsusaka was more likely to implode than anyone else.

Ceetar
May 06 2014 07:46 AM
Re: IGT - May 5 - Mets at Marlins

well, relievers on May 5th are full of small sample size stuff anyway.

I don't question the move to go to Dice-K as much as representation of absolute faith in him by leaving him in as he threw ball after ball after ball. Relieving is new to him, his preparation has been a story, and he's seemingly been up every day for innings at a time. Maybe this is just coincidence or growing pains but it just seems like Collins should've had those things in his mind and pulled him early. And this comes just after he left Mejia in after he's presumably lost it as well. It's just starting to look like a disturbing trend.

Then there is using your "closer" in the tie game on the road, which he rarely does. Given that and Valverde's non-use (big park and his problem has been home runs. Would've been a more logical one-inning choice than Dice-K?) I'm starting to suspect Jose is again the favorite for closer.

Frayed Knot
May 06 2014 07:53 AM
Re: IGT - May 5 - Mets at Marlins

Well now you're shifting your argument to Terry's use of him rather than Matsuaka himself which is where you started things.
You wanted him pulled earlier? - I'm OK with that. I'm just arguing against this notion that his failure last night was somehow pre-ordained or that he needs to be farmed out because we don't like his warmup routine.

So just to put a bow on the stats (however limited) of Dice-K's life as a reliever to date:
- in 7 outings prior to last night only once did he not go at least a full inning and that was when he was brought to close out an inning when there were already two outs
- he had only been charged with 2 runs all season and one of those was a time he went 2-2/3
- 5 of the 7 times he didn't give up a hit. Hell, he had only given up 4 in total over 10-1/3 innings

For a guy "not prepared for the role" he seemed to be muddling along all right until the 8th inning last night.

Edgy MD
May 06 2014 07:59 AM
Re: IGT - May 5 - Mets at Marlins

No, his failure was certainly not knowable. I'd just like to see some guys tuned for short roles and some guys tuned for longer ones. Terry's graduated one long guy, then another, to setup work, which is fine, if he tunes them for that work and reciprocally is tuning somebody else for the long jobs.

Ceetar
May 06 2014 08:04 AM
Re: IGT - May 5 - Mets at Marlins

I'm really just ranting. (I'm way more annoyed at the offense/lineup construction last night) I don't think anything's decided either way and it's certainly something to keep an eye on. I just don't think Dice-K throwing 4 innings in the bullpen every game is setting him up for long term success.

But on the other hand, he's always been been a throw a billion pitches kind of pitcher. Thinking back to what I've read about him in the past, it seems like Red Sox fans were always infuriated that he'd be at 95 pitches through 5 regularly and it always seemed like Dice-K shrugged it off and felt like he could pitch more innings and he got pulled due to the rampant 100 pitches means you're done philosophies. He's also crazy slow and throws a lot of balls to boot. It's sorta infuriating to watch.

But 8 BB in 10.1 IP is not going to get it done. Even the 6 in 10.1 he had prior to yesterday is bad. I think Keith was ready to strangle him.
