IGT 05/12 Metsies at Skankees

NY Mets at NY Yankees
When: 7:05 PM ET, Monday, May 12, 2014
Where: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The 18th edition of the Subway Series begins Monday when the New York Yankees host the New York Mets in the first of four straight between the teams, two apiece at their respective home venues. Both enter the series after late-inning drama Sunday, but on very different notes. The Mets scored three times in the ninth and again in the 11th to steal a 5-4 win from Philadelphia while the Yankees dropped a 6-5 decision on a walk-off hit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth at Milwaukee.

The Mets won all four meetings last season, their longest winning streak over any stretch of the series since it began. However, the Yankees are 8-3-6 in season series and 13-3 in home season series against the Mets. The opener of the four-game, two-borough set features the return to Yankee Stadium of outfielder Curtis Granderson, who played four seasons with the Yankees before signing a free-agent deal to cross town this offseason.

TV:
7:05 p.m. ET, PIX11 (Mets), YES (Yankees)

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Mets RH Bartolo Colon (2-5, 5.36 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Hiroki Kuroda (2-3, 4.43)

Colon has thrown seven innings while giving up three or fewer runs in four of his seven starts, including Tuesday against Miami when he was on the short end of a 3-0 loss. Colon's road ERA stands at 7.23 due to rocky outings at Colorado and the Los Angeles Angels and he has a 4.90 mark while pitching at the two Yankee Stadiums, much of that when he was with the Yankees in 2011. The 40-year-old has allowed 55 hits, but has walked only five in his 43 2/3 innings this year.

Kuroda hit his stride once the calendar turned to May after posting a 5.28 ERA in five April outings. He has let up four earned runs in 13 2/3 innings while striking out 15 and walking one this month, but remains without a win over his last four outings. Kuroda is 2-5 with a 4.14 ERA in nine career starts versus the Mets.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Yankees SS Derek Jeter is 15-for-39 with two home runs against Colon.
2. Mets 3B David Wright needs two RBI to become the 20th active player with 900, five of whom are Yankees.
3. The Yankees have outscored the Mets 75-48 in 14 meetings at the current Yankee Stadium.

Mets have never lost a Monday night regular-season game to the MFYs, having Mlickied them in 1997 and beaten them again in 2013.

Not too pleased with the Rockies, Marlins, and Phillies still. I

rivalry. Glad it's shortened.

Dillon Gee, starting his run of success that continues to this day, was at his best, striking out 12 (and that's 12 YANKEES, which is always a delight), walking ZERO, and giving up one run on four hits, in 7 1/3 innings.[/list:u][/list:u][/list:u]

It was enough to make any true New Yorker Met fan grow an inch or two. My heart, in fact, grew three sizes on that day.

And then the team went out and got swept BADLY by the Marlins: 5-1, 8-1, and 11-6. Blurgh.

The Yankees game notes would like you to know that John Lannan is 2/5 against Hiroki Kuroda with 1 HR.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis 0/3.

Omar Quintanilla 1/5.

This stadium suits anyone-- platoon shortstop, pinch-hitting pitcher, monkey with a novelty bat-- who can hit it to right/right-center, like, 1/3 of the time.

I remember far too much air under far too many Ruben Tejada outs. And maybe that study gave him credit for 'hard hit' if the ball winds up in deep or semi-deep OF but there no way can he be an effective player getting under the ball.

Either way, EVERYTHING he's hit since yesterday has been hard, even his outs.

Brooks Baseball which is perhaps a little more accurate? has it as more balls, but the 5th still clearly a strike.

Monday nights: 3-0 vs MFYs.

Tuesday nights: 1-1, plus a win in the only World Series game that mattered from 2000.

Re: IGT 05/12 Metsies at Skankees

Hard to think of a more fulfilling game to build on.
1. Taking a bitter rival.
2. On the road.
3. Packed house.
4. Starting a four-game series.
5. Successfully transitioning Mejia to the pen on a very positive note/positive performance.
6. Getting the offense going, and winning because of the bats, not despite them.
7. Coming from behind.
8. Twice.
9. The mopey rookie catcher, feeling heat from his backup, gets untracked.
10. The big-buckz free agent outfielder gets untracked.
11. Against his former team.
12. The outfield competition is rising all ships.
13. The goofy firstbaseman becomes a glove man.

Even the downsides are ideal:
1. If you've got to pick a pitcher to get lit up, you pick Colon, the transitional piece.
2. If a closer is going to struggle, then let him still grind out the save, but further grease the skids toward a transition to an in-house solution.
3. Jeter's three hits and a walk produced no RBI, and no runs scored. The guy's had a career of empty calories and there it is in a microcosm.

If Mejia doesn't accept his new role he's done as a Met. I do feel that they should have given him the start in this series, but I thought it was crazy to sit EYj going into Colorado. So what do I know?

I think it's more about innings than dollars.

I think it's more about building the pitching staff the best way they know how than innings or dollars.

Look, pretty soon, they'll have Colon, Niese, Gee, Wheeler, Mejia, Harvey, Hefner, Montero, deGrom, Syndergaard, and Matz (and other comers*, and the likes of merry wanderers like Matsuzaka and Torres) all fighting for spots in the same five-man rotation. Sooner or later, some of these guys --- like Familia before them --- were going to get transitioned to the pen. Mejia can still be a great asset there, and he can still get another crack at the rotation, but this is what honest competition looks like. And it could ultimately be glorious.

* For at the center of them all shall be a man named RAINY LARA.

I'd say he's been good, except for three starts. Or four.

Next time Bartolo has three or four good starts in a row, the Mets should trade him.

Re: IGT 05/12 Metsies at Skankees

That may well be the plan, and perhaps a good 'un. But he's the guy who is supposed to buy you time to make decisions most responsibly.

And the reason he's in the rotation and not Mejia is that he's holding a spot for the best alternative to take it from him, and Mejia hasn't thus far shown that to be him.

I agree, but he seems not to be doing that. I had envisioned him lasting the season with the Mets, but he's been shakier than they've probably expected. If the Mets get a chance to get out from under the second year of Colon's contract, they should consider taking it.

Edgy MD
May 13 2014 08:26 AM
Re: IGT 05/12 Metsies at Skankees

Sure he's been shakier.

But he had a 5.35 ERA going into last night, and Mejia's was 5.06. Given that Mejia is expected to be around as the logjam of talent intensifies, and Colon is not, the decision seemed perfectly justifiable. Mejia lit the place up! In a good way!

Yesterday, he was a pitcher struggling to find himself. Today he's a weapon!

Heh. This was start #8.

He got lit up in start #3 in Anaheim, start #6 in Colorado, and start #8 last night.
Start #2 in Atlanta and #5 against St. Louis were very good.

The other three were middling.

Re: IGT 05/12 Metsies at Skankees

Yeah, Colon has basically left the team with almost no chance to win thrice already. If the percentage of bad starts doesn't go down they're going to have to take him out of the 'ro.
