KTE Phils -- May 9-11 (and beyond?)

Seeing as how the last Philly KTE was more or less stillborn on account of it being for a rain-shortened one-game series, so I’ll revive the part we had and we can tack on from there.
The main point was that their lineup as we’ve known it is pretty much intact

C - Carlos Ruiz ... Yup, still there
1B - Ryan Howard ... still
2B - Chase Utley ... still
SS - Jimmy Rollins ... still
3B - something named Cody Asche replaces Michael Young who replaced Placido Polanco in the one Phils position that seems to resemble a game of musical chairs
LF - Domonic Brown ... now 26 y/o and seemingly a prospect since forever, has been playing pretty much full time since last year
CF - Ben Revere ... former Twin now in his 2nd season in the city of Brotherly somethin' or other
RF - Marlon Byrd ... off-season FA signee is playing every day and has relegated John Mayberry Jr to the bench

Bench:
John Mayberry Jr
Tony Gwynn Jr
Freddie Galvis Jr
Jayson Nix Jr
Wil Nieves Jr
Cesar Hernandez Jr

- But Jimmy Rollins hasn't been playing or has been in the DH slot since straining a groin (his own presumably) last Sunday. Galvis & Nix have been filling in at SS
- Ben Revere's starting job in CF is on shaky ground after a misplayed ball earlier in the week and his noodle arm being unable to keep runners from, well, running
- and Domonic Brown's OPS is a whopping 564 and 6' 5"/230 with 5 XBHs in 112 ABs isn't going to cut it
- There's talk of shifting Marlon Byrd to CF and mixing and matching in one or both of the corner slots

On the pitching side we’ll miss Lee and we’ll miss Burnett

Friday 7:10 — Roberto Hernandez vs Mejia
Hernandez is not the former NYM relief pitcher but the player once known as Fausto Carmona back when he was with the Indians
This will be his 8th game w/Philly, 7th start; 2-1, 4.50, 1.41 WHiP

Saturday 7:10 — Kyle Kendrick vs Gee
Kendrick, who we seem to face six times per year*, is 0-3 but the stats show he hasn’t pitched all that bad: 3.58, 1.41
* Actually it’s “only” 22 times faced in his career/16 starts. He’s 8-8 w/a more than respectable 3.43 ERA

Sunday 1:10 — Cole Hamels vs Niese
Hamels pitched the lone NYM-Phil game this year and we pretty much beat him up: 6 runs on 8 hits + 5 walks in just 4-2/3. He’s only made 3 starts this season having gotten a late start due to injuries and hasn’t fared well in any of them: 13 runs in 16-2/3 IP on 24 hits + 7 walks

I don't care if your name really is Roberto Hernandez, Fausto Carmona is much better.

Having seen Ryan Howard throughout his career I gotta say he's looking more in shape than ever, but he's never been slower on the bases.
As for my nemesis, Chase Utley, he's dangerous again, like he used to be.

Re: KTE Phils -- May 9-11 (and beyond?)

Phils lost again tonight to Toronto and RA Dickey 12-6. That's a four game sweep for the Jays.
AJ Burnett, who had been pitching well, got knocked around tonight. Phils staff was already 2nd worst in NL at RA/G so tonight's game won't help - although Arizona is so far in the lead (and by lead I mean last) in that category that it doesn't look like anyone will catch them.
Philly pen outside of Papelbon looks like its been throwing up some ugly numbers too.

And in the meantime, I'd just like to give props to the city of Philadelphia for staying classy as always.

It seems that a radio station outing led to "hundreds" of folks engaging in sex and urination (hopefully not at the same time) on the streets and/or on nearby people's property.

Classic rock may never take the weekend off, but "new alternative" rock apparently takes comfort everywhere.

Speaking of which, that anonymous third sacker Cody Asche has been ON TOP OF THE WORLD-EH over the last two weeks (.333/.407/.708 in 6 starts, with 5 XBH), which should help him hold off struggling power-packing AAAer Maikel Franco for a few weeks longer, at least.

Re: KTE Phils -- May 9-11 (and beyond?)

Locals in Northern Liberties complained lack of security and scant portable toilets at a radio station's weekend block party, which caused hordes of drunken revelers to pee on their properties. One brazen couple was filmed having sex in the yard of an apartment complex.

How, like... 1979 is this article? Brazen young people still listen to the radio?

Man, Tony Gwynn Jr. is terrible. He's got a .630 career OPS in over 1700 PA. He's made over four million bucks in the majors just playing off his dad's name. His uncle Chris was terrible too, but better than Tony: .678 OPS in 1100 PA.

THOUGHTS ON THE SERIES!!!

We're gonna be at the Sunday game.

Half-expecting to witness Familia's first save of the year this weekend.

Terry'll prolly bat Flores 7th, d'Arnaud 8th but I'd be tempted to lead off with Flores & bat Lagares 7.

While I was writing that above sentence I was actually thinking how cool would it be to start EJY (leading off) and Familia or Germen as starting pitcher, then switch them out for CY/Mejia in the second inning. Sure it wastes two guys early but presumably addresses the issues of Mejia getting deep enough into games and exploits EYJ's single ability to reach and make something happen without having to rely on him in other situations (I mean, when he reaches he scores, and often, it would seem in the first inning) and gets you more opportunities for early O with the pinch-hit or double-switch. Highly unusual and probably very good arguments against this but if a manager had the stones to try it I would applaud.

One at a time but this looks like a sweepable series.

Yeah... I don't think these are the managerial stones you're looking for, bud.

This is true. If this were futbol, he could probably go with "CARMONA" (with quotes) or something.

Upon further review, it's not just Asche. Chutley, Chooch, Byrd... they're all kind of hitting, aren't they?

Re: KTE Phils -- May 9-11 (and beyond?)

And speaking of the Philly bullpen (I know we weren't but work with me here) check out the weird numbers from LH-R Jake Diekman:

16 appearances, 16.1 IP, 2-1 record. OK, nothing weird there.
But he's somehow rung up a 5.51 ERA with that record on only 13 hits + 6 BBs (a more-than respectable 1.16 WHiP) and 27 Ks!! (just shy of 15 per/9 IP)
I know ERA for a reliever is hardly a tell-all stat, but what this guy has managed to do is allow over half (10 of 19) of the runners he allowed to reach base this season to score. That's either just freaky bad timing or he's the type who's either on his game that night or a total bust.

And it's not like he's just a LOOGY either as most of his appearances have been for a full inning and on occasion has gone longer.

Re: KTE Phils -- May 9-11 (and beyond?)

Thoughts on ways a Diekman can allow 10 runs on only 19 baserunners and very few chances for them to advance on outs, as his outs are all strikeouts:

[list:3d1ac5wg][*:3d1ac5wg]A disproportionate number of those 13 hits are leaving the park, allowing a few of those baserunners to jog all the way home and push anybody on base there with him. This holds up, as he has given up three homeruns in 16 1/3 innings, despite only giving up two in 65 2/3 innings prior to this season. the entirety of those homers are (1) a two-run jobby to Justin Morneau, (2) a nother two-runner to A.J. Pollock, and (3) a grand slam to Dan Uggla.[/*:m:3d1ac5wg]
[*:3d1ac5wg]Maybe he can't hold players on, despite being a lefty. Data is insufficient here. His team has yielded two stolen bases with him on the mound, with one guy caught.[/*:m:3d1ac5wg]
[*:3d1ac5wg]He's a real wild child! (Nope, no wild pitches thus far.)[/*:m:3d1ac5wg]
[*:3d1ac5wg]Maybe he wilts under pressure![/*:m:3d1ac5wg]
[*:3d1ac5wg]Most likely, small data sets simply yield weird results. I hope Satin hits homer number four off of him, though.[/*:m:3d1ac5wg][/list:u:3d1ac5wg]
