Phone books ...

... why do I still get them left outside? I have three
from three different companies. They are useless wastes
of recycled whatever they are printed on and none of them
are comprehensive enough to be of much use.

The internet sucks too for specific company information when
drilling down to a specific type of company (service) and to an
area. It's all yelps, and ask me's, and gotyournumberdotnet, and
too much bull crap to go on about.

Don't get me wrong, I don't miss the big old clunky phone book.
Who really ever used it to look up a number more than once or
twice a year?

Fourth paragraph, I'm obviously babbling. The information age
kinda sucks sometimes.

Re: Phone books ...

On the other side of the coin, delivering phone-books was a nice little job for a student. I remember one summer way back in the late 70's-early 80's, IIRC, my G/F and I delivered phone-books (white and yellow pages) around the area for around a month. Of course back then phone-books were much more widely desired and much more useful.

Not to mention the print is so much smaller than it used to be :)

Anybody know a good reverse lookup place? Anywho used to be good but now they all cost money.

Those are the worst, and often take up three pages
of a google search on a number. By page four or five
you might get some clues without even clicking on
anything.

Remember the flip-down phone books in the phone
booths? Oh wait, remember the phone booths?

And then every once in a while some guy who looked through that book before you ripped a page out and took it with him because he didn't have a pencil & paper to write down the
number he was looking up (or was too lazy to) -- and it turned out to be the page you needed!!

I keep the hard copy phone books for those times that we lose electricity or Internet service and I have to look up numbers manually.

Re: Phone books ...

I can't remember the last time I tried to do this. I usually just google the number and either it comes up or it doesn't and I don't worry about it.

But I always used reversephonedirectory.com

I have no idea how fast it's updated, but I moved last August from that address and kept my number and provider.

And don't forget using it for a booster seat at the table when relatives with little kids visit.

Re: Phone books ...

We got a new phone book in the mail today and thought of this thread.

On the front was a magnet for some law firm. It made me think of an ad I saw on TV the other day for a law firm that specializes in.....

.......Table saw injuries.

Google.com. Just type the number in the search field.
