Return of Ike Memorial Day IGT, 5/26

Ike walks in the first, loading the bases, but a trip to the mound preceeds a Russel Martin GiDP and the Mets escape the pirate threat.

Blasted menaces are threatening again in the second.

Eventually, the bottom of the order comes up, so deGrom Metscapes in the second also.

What is the season record for hitting into DP's? Because whatever it is, the Mets are going to break it this year.

Re: Return of Ike Memorial Day IGT, 5/26

Most GiDPs of all time belongs to the 1990 Boston Red Sox with 174. The National League record belongs to the 2011 St. Louis Cardinals with 169. (Both solid teams!)

The Mets currently have 29 through 49 1/3 games, putting them on a pace for 95.23.

But they're heating up, it seems.

Sitting in my backyard listening to Howie and Josh, so I can't throw things at my TV.

Abreu hits but to no avail. However, the sun is warm and the beer is tasty.

Re: Return of Ike Memorial Day IGT, 5/26

Two outs in the fifth and deGrombles is over 90 pitches.

Also, they're wearing camouflage hats and embroidery, so you may be doing better with Josh and Howie.

McCutcheon gets an infield hit on an indifferent double clutch play by Wilmer and an indifferent stretch by Duda.

Wondering if deGrom and his .800 batting average can play first......

Re: Return of Ike Memorial Day IGT, 5/26

Interesting conflict here where the new plate-blocking rule and the new replay review rule converge, but I think Lagares got his hand in there anyway. With an inch of room it slid right under the calf.

Re: Return of Ike Memorial Day IGT, 5/26

Keith & Gary are missing the point here, IMO, Lagares plain got his hand under Martin's shin prior to the tag.
I'm not sure that the new rules had anything to do with this.

I don't know if and when we'll find out if the overturn is based on interference or a simple reversal. Strange that Keith and Gary don't see that the hand seemed to be in there.

I would think that the blocking/non-blocking thing would be a judgement call not subject to review, but I don't know that.

Howie/Josh were certain he was out, FWIW.

Re: Return of Ike Memorial Day IGT, 5/26

Since this was techically an umpire's review, not a manager's challenge, Gary and Keith might be right that the umpires were looking at whether the catcher was illegally blocking the plate. If Terry was saying the Lagares beat the throw, I assume that would be a challenge. It's possible that the it wasn't an illegal block, but that Lagares was safe anyway. And was he really being blocked? He did get his hand in--if the pads were all the way down, he's got a broken hand. Dumb play on his part.

How do we know this wasn't a Terry challenge? He was certainly out there making a case prior to them going to the headphones.

I was thinking that too. It looked like Lagares' hand may have reached under the catcher's leg and tapped the plate before the glove came down on his back. I hope we find out on what basis the call was overturned.

Interesting dilemma being set up here. You can 't send either Montero or deGrom down or to the pen.

What happens when Gee gets back?

Re: Return of Ike Memorial Day IGT, 5/26

I look to Terry on this one. Several consecutive decisions backfired on him:

[list:18ibjlfh][*:18ibjlfh]Not double switching in Tejada when he went to Familia. This
[list:18ibjlfh][*:18ibjlfh]Forced him to lose Familia after 1/3 of an inning in pinch-hitting for him the next half inning. I realize he went the day before but you want a chance to get a few outs there.[/*:m:18ibjlfh]
[*:18ibjlfh]Kept the defense less-than-ideal in a late-inning-small-lead situation.[/*:m:18ibjlfh][/list:u:18ibjlfh][/*:m:18ibjlfh]
[*:18ibjlfh]Getting outfoxed on switches in facing a righthander with power with Rice on the mound.[/*:m:18ibjlfh]
[*:18ibjlfh]Not putting Wright on the line. (A possible residue of Tejada not being there is Wright being one step further off the line.)[/*:m:18ibjlfh]
[*:18ibjlfh]Going to Valverde with a one-run lead when Torres, if nobody else, was an option.[/*:m:18ibjlfh][/list:u:18ibjlfh]

I didn't think they were going to release Valverde today, but rather after the series.

Davey Johnson's big no-more-bullshit statement in 1984 was releasing three veteran pitchers. So, um, Valverde would be head number two. I think that's my point.

Any notion on who will replace Hudge? Bobby Abreu?

Good riddance Valverde. Hudgens is just one of those "gotta do something" moves.
