IGT 05/28 - Buccos at Metsies

Didn't realize this was a gay dame!

Pittsburgh at NY Mets
When: 1:10 PM ET, Wednesday, May 28, 2014
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

Changing hitting coaches did not produce a noticeable jolt for the New York Mets' offense, but a bullpen shuffle has the team in position for its first series win since April 25-27. Vic Black, promoted from Triple-A when Jose Valverde was released after Monday's loss to Pittsburgh, stifled a pair of rallies with inning-ending strikeouts as the Mets evened the series with a 4-2 win Tuesday. New York sends out Bartolo Colon to face the Pirates in Wednesday's rubber match.

Pittsburgh is tied with Miami for the fewest road wins (seven) in the majors but has a chance to win its first series away from home since taking two of three from the Chicago Cubs on April 8-10. Reigning National League MVP Andrew McCutchen is 3-for-6 with four walks in the first two games and is batting 29-for-86 in May. Sinkerballer Charlie Morton, coming off his first win of the season, will oppose Colon as the Pirates seek their sixth win in eight games.

TV:
1:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Pirates RH Charlie Morton (1-6, 3.29 ERA) vs. Mets LH Bartolo Colon (3-5, 5.34)

Morton finally earned his elusive first victory and halted a 14-start winless drought in the process by holding the Washington Nationals to one run and five hits over 5 2/3 innings. Morton still struggled with his control, allowing four walks and throwing 108 pitches, but the bullpen managed to preserve his first win since Sept. 2. Morton is seeking his first win away from home, going 0-3 with a 4.62 ERA in four road starts.

Rain wiped out Colon's last start after four innings but he went a season-high eight innings in his previous outing, giving up two runs on five hits in a win over the Nationals. That ended a three-start winless stretch in which Colon was knocked around for 16 earned runs and 28 hits in a span of 17 1/3 innings. The 41-year-old Colon will be making only his fourth start of the season at Citi Field and first since April 24.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Mets C Travis d'Arnaud, sidelined since May 13 with a concussion, is expected to be activated for Wednesday's game.
2. Morton has never beaten the Mets in six appearances (five starts), logging an 0-2 mark and allowing New York to bat .322 against him.
3. Mets RHP Dillon Gee had a setback in his recovery from a strained right lat muscle and is headed to the team's complex in Florida to get healthy.

If Centeno is in the lineup, it suggests d'Arnaud won't be active for the game in any capacity.

Maybe it's some sort of master class in stranding dudes, and Chris Young is visiting professor.

Anytuckles, Shumcas Duda opens the second with a walk. And it's Ruben Tejada, promoted to the seventh spot in the order.

Wright's HR makes Laggy's ill-advised steal attempt of 3rd for the 3rd out the previous inning even more inexcusable.
And, yeah, the pre-determined outcome fallacy and all that, but it was still dumb and, with at least four of those pre-pitch steal attempts gone wrong this year, it's time to abandon this strategy.

Outs on the basepaths provide players with a much-needed chance to catch their breath before they take the field again in the next half inning.

Plus there's all that energy you save by running only to 3rd instead of all the way home.

Terry had himself an interesting choice there and wound up opting for Familia vs Ike as opposed to Edgin vs Gaby Sanchez (who almost certainly would have PH'd for Ike)

Reminds me of this hilarious press release:

Executive VP and COO Jeff Wilpon. "Nothing signals the arrival of summer more
than watching Mets baseball and enjoying delicious Wise snacks."

September 17, 2005, Wise will participate in the Mets' Fanfest program,
providing free samples of potato chips, kettle chips and Cheez Doodles to
fans.

On July 17, July 23 and August 6, 2005, fans will receive a free bag of

YAY! Only one batting coach is undefeated in 2014.

Thoughts on the game:
[list:x0yikvxu][*:x0yikvxu]That shot Rubin hit off his knee --- that looked like the type of blunt injury that's worse tomorrow than today. I'm suddenly wondering if Campbell is any kind of notion of a back-up shortstop. I'm also thinking Quintanilla-Seratelli-Muno-Tovar-Sandoval-type thoughts.
[/*:m:x0yikvxu]
[*:x0yikvxu]Speaking of Campbell: any notion that he's good enough to sub in regularly for Duda for late-inning defense?
[/*:m:x0yikvxu]
[*:x0yikvxu]Puts the Mets a half game ahead of the Phils (with Philly playing tonight) going into their head-to-head battle.[/*:m:x0yikvxu][/list:u:x0yikvxu]

From what I've seen of him at first so far, IMO, no. Looks like an even switch to me. Of course, if Campbell plays there more, he might get better.

Duda just had an off day on the hops.

Las Vegas closes out a 13-7 win over El Paso. Nieuwenhuis, clearly pissed that den Dekker got a callup over him, slugs a single, double, and two homers, driving in four. One-man-wrecking-crew-type stuff from Kirk.

Ryan Reid gets a weird three-inning save, giving up five hits but striking out seven.

Jeff Francoeur threw a scoreless eighth inning for El Paso.
