IGT 06/02 - Mets at Phils

NY Mets at Philadelphia
When: 7:05 PM ET, Monday, June 2, 2014
Where: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
SportsDirect Inc.

Bartolo Colon turned 41 years old nine days ago, but the right-hander has done his part to solidify the New York Mets’ shaky starting rotation. Colon takes the mound Monday as the Mets wrap up an extended five-game series in Philadelphia that has featured a pair of 14-inning games having won his past two starts, allowing only two earned runs in 15 1/3 innings. The two teams have played 39 innings in the past three days, New York winning the past two contests.

Philadelphia has lost eight of its past 12 to fall into last place in the National League East, six games behind first-place Atlanta, and is 12-18 at home. The Mets have won seven of their past 11 games and are 14-12 away from home entering the series finale. New York’s bullpen has allowed nine earned runs in 43 1/3 innings in the Mets’ past 12 games.

TV:
7:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), CSN (Philadelphia)

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Mets RH Bartolo Colon (4-5, 4.73 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Roberto Hernandez (2-2, 3.76)

Colon has defeated the Nationals and Pirates during his winning streak, firing eight innings of two-run ball against Washington before pitching 7 1/3 shutout innings with a season-high nine strikeouts Wednesday against Pittsburgh. He is pitching to contact – opponents are hitting .286 against him, but the veteran has walked only seven hitters in 64 2/3 innings. Colon owns a 1-2 record and 4.65 ERA in five career starts against the Phillies.

Hernandez has made two appearances against the Mets this season, surrendering one run on six hits in five innings May 9 and pitching two-third of an inning of scoreless relief two days later. He got a no-decision against the Rockies on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits with five walks in 5 2/3 innings. Hernandez has made three career appearances against New York, posting a 1.50 ERA.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Colon’s nine-strikeout effort on Wednesday gave him 2,002 for his career.
2. The Phillies are in the midst of playing 41 games in 41 days, through June 29.
3. Mets 1B Lucas Duda hit the game-winning homer in the 11th inning Sunday, extending his hitting streak to five games.

Hmmm... It seems to me that an equally valid perspective is that hes done his part to shakify the New York Mets' solid rotation.

4 out of 5 sounds (and is) a helluva lot better than 3 out of 5.
Will stay ahead of Philly no matter what, can catch Washington with a win tonight.

I'd flop MdD and Abreu in the lineup. Not for all time maybe, but for right now I would.

Phillies announcers wondering out loud if bats are still made of ash, and scratching their heads for an answer.

"They were popular for a time..."

Yeah, for a time starting with the dawn of time. Matt Stairs doesn't know if bats are still made of ash?

Re: IGT 06/02 - Mets at Phils

So the Phillies broadcast just showed a heartwarming gesture by Bobby Abreu presenting a fan with a bat, leading to a huge celebration from the fan and the section.

The booth didn't say it but the fan was apparently mentally handicapped, and as they're talking about how heartwarming it was to see the young man so delighted, the young man starts expresses his excitement by repeatedly pointing to his crotch.

Abreu walks and asks how you like his sample size now!

If he starts talking about the Phillies or-gan-I-zation then it'll really be a dead give-away -- although I tend to think of that sort of accent as more middle-Canada (Ontario or west) while Stairs is from New Brunswick in 'The Maritimes'
The odd part about Stairs when he was playing (for part of his career at least) is that he made his off-season home in ... Bangor, Maine*!
Think about that for a minute, Choosing Bangor as the home you're going to live in for only October through January! Was kind of cool though in that he'd spend that time coaching youth hockey.

* he left his home in the Maritimes and headed down the turnpike for New England -- sweet New England
Name that tune if you know ^^^

Re: IGT 06/02 - Mets at Phils

Funny thing Stairs admitted yesterday. He hated pinch hitting. It's not just that he preferred starting (who wouldn't?) but he couldn't handle sitting on the bench all game worrying that his only trip to the plate would be with the game on the line.

Makes perfect sense, but who admits that?

Aumont's warming in the pen.

He faced his sorta-trademate* Of-Arnaud this series once or twice, right?

OE1: I conflate. Aumont came in the Lee-to-the-M's trade; Arnaud went in the Halladay trade.
OE2: Yes, he did. TDA worked the walk that led to Duda's gamewinning PH HR yesterday.

Just when I was about to start critiquing Flores's swing too.
You can see his bat-on-ball skillz but I was about to say how he looks like he's feeling for the ball too often, that even a sizable chunk of the hits he is getting are softies somewhere that are just falling in or sneaking through. Then he goes and dumps one 15 rows deep on a swing that wasn't all that violent and you see what others saw in him all this time. How much power he would develop was always in question but not that there was power potential there.

Two dang games better in the standings, relative to the opponent, that's how much better. They had a five-game sweep within reach too, but best not to get too greedy, as the Phils had two of those Met wins within easy reach too.

Anybody want to speculate where this falls among the top wins on the season? Colon getting some momentum. den Dekker showing his game in all its glory. Flores untracked. A lot to build on. Even the two walks by d'Arnaud are good for something.

Series wise. Big in a number of ways. Two being cahnfidence (esp the pen) and momentum. They know this Phils team is lacking and the Cubs coming up are worse. Take advantage of these games. And then, hopefully, play better against the better teams. The way this team has been jelling lately, I think they can compete if they keep it up. If all injuries are temp I think we are in good shape.

This game wise. Also big. This fourth win was a slap in the Phillies phace and might be the blow that buries em for good. We'll see.
