IGT - Mets @ Cubs -- 6/5/14

Frayed Knot
Jun 05 2014 03:15 PM

Remember that it's 7:00 tonight (I have no idea why the 6 PM local start time).
We need this one. Losing 2 of 3 in Chicago is a lost opportunity, getting swept would be an embarrassment.

Muffy gets the day off which is probably good ... but not if it results in our worst hitter leading off.
Hell, I'd bat deGrom there before Cy Oung. Plus Terry misses the chance to put the three little d's in the same lineup.

C Young - CF
Granderson - RF
Wright - 3B
Campbell - 1B
Brown - LF
Flores - 2B
Tejada - SS
d'Arnaud - C
deGrom - P

Buddy Carlyle has been DFA'd to make room for the return of Brown - so we've not only got a bigger bench as of now but also 3 LHPs in the pen.

we've been batting one of our worst hitters leadoff almost daily all season, why change it now?

I want deGrom to get a win. Yea, now's a great time to field that line-up. [ /]sarcasm meter

Line-up, please make a fool out of me and score a dozen runs for the kid.

Wow. He may have been safe. Great throw Brown but only if he stays out. Man advances to 2nd on the throw.

Could get reversed, but I think the glove brushed his wrist as he reached across.

Re: IGT - Mets @ Cubs -- 6/5/14

Crapcicles. Called safe. I would have wanted to challenge the DP thing but that did look too close to risk.
And Wood takes deGrom yard. YOW!

Re: IGT - Mets @ Cubs -- 6/5/14

Nope says the ruling. Do you think the evidence says he was conclusively safe?

And the homer suddenly makes it a three-run reversal.

Re: IGT - Mets @ Cubs -- 6/5/14

Cubs announcers were surprised that Terry didn't challenge the safe call at first base on the attempted double-play. On replay it did look like it should have been an out call.

If that call had been reversed, the Cubs wouldn't have scored any of their three runs.

I was a little surprised because it looked like he avoided the tag from the views available, but there was no definitive view, imo. In other words, a perspective showing some space between the glove and the guy. I didn't see that so I didn't think they'd reverse it.

Re: IGT - Mets @ Cubs -- 6/5/14

The replays I saw on the Chicago telecast looked very much like the runner's hand touched the plate before there was any tag. I was fully expecting that reversal.

It's a pitchers' hitting exhibition. Losing ballz in the ivy like Dave Kingman.

One replay looked safe, the other out (only saw two).

It would have been a risk. It was a crucial DP tho. One of those possible game changers for a pitcher.

deGrom doubles, lol. I love this kid.

They've been using Lucas Duda's photo for deGrom on the scoreboard. Looks like he's hitting and pitching like it.

Close.
22-for-116 over their last 10 games (.190)
Five of those hits were garbage time hits in the blowout win at Philly, and because a large chunk of our hits are singles, not all of the hits w/RiSP actually plate a run.

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Jun 05 2014 08:14 PM

Y'know, I was just about to say that this game has the feel of one where we give up two insurance runs and then score twice in the 9th to fall just short (with the go-ahead runners left on base of course).
Well, we fulfilled the first half of that prediction.

I did enjoy the game at Wrigley; the 'Friendly Confines" is not just hype. The fans gave only minor ribbing to Mets fans and there was a lot of chatting (one girl asked me how many innings in a game!). And it's a beautiful ballpark.

Well, I think it's remotely close, in that they're both tag plays at the same remote base, and one was successful and the other missed.

I just means to make a point that a missed tag cost us big. Obviously, less than perfect defense and pitching wouldn't matter so much if the team would hit a little.

Why pitch your closer in a non-save situation, especially when losing?

Actually, I think the key play was Valbueno's double in the second. If den Decker (or Lagares, alas) were in center, it's an out and the runs don't score.

Because using save situations to dictate when to use your closer is succumbing to a false hierarchy of values.

He had already missed three days while pitchers of lesser status toiled. It was the Mets last best hope to win a game, and saving their allegedly best available pitcher for a save opportunity would have been counter-productive.

In theory, to keep the other team from scoring more runs and to give your team a chance to win. It didn't work this time, but the strategy is sound.

Re: IGT - Mets @ Cubs -- 6/5/14

I guess another reason is that he hadn't pitched for a while (didn't realize that) and they wanted to keep him sharp.
