Dan Coughlin reflects on the 40th Anniversary of Ten-Cent Beer Night, including this amazing shot of the Texas Rangers, armed and terrified as they charge the field to defend their players.

I dunno. The guy on the left (a coach?), well let's say this doesn't look like it's his first rodeo. I'd be terrified if I encountered him holding a bat like that.

Billy Martin behind 40th anniversary MVP Jeff Burroughs's left shoulder.

Re: Ten Cents a Sud

If you read the story, it was Burroughs who was initially in trouble when somebody ran out and stole his hat and he tried to resist. So the personnel on the bench went out to rescue him and everybody else, which explains why Burroughs is unarmed and unhatted. (He's clutching his recovered hat in his left hand.)

Pretty funny that Martin --- who undoubtedly ordered the charge --- ends up behind the front lines. Billy might have liked to scrap one-on-one, but he knew that in a mob war the little guy gets trampled. Looking at his staff, the bloodthirsty coach on the left appears to be Charlie "Swede" Silvera, who turns 90 in October.

And Frank Lucchesi plays a small role in Mets history… he was the manager who was punched by Lenny Randle, leading to his release from the Rangers and his signing by the Mets.

I'm surprised there's no video of this on YouTube, although Disco Demolition Night is well-documented there.

If I'm reading the roster right this is The Human Pain Display, Mike Hargrove, rescuing Burroughs with his fists of fury.
