Another Campus Shooting

Has it become so commonplace now that it is no longer the lead story on any news site? I think that is the saddest thing yet.

The last few haven't even warranted threads here. I shake my head at this.

I was thinking the same thing. It's gone from being an outrage that we have to do something about, to something that's just a fact of life, like apartment fires and car crashes.

Most notable is that this wasn't a massacre because of one student armed with a handful of pepperspray and a heartful of courage apparently took the shooter down.

I have strange and baseless theory that the proliferation of these things can be tied to presidencies. Not based on any presidential policy --- apart from the liberal legality of gun ownership of course. But rather that they spike as a two-term presidency is rounding the corner in year six, and the polity and culture is so divided and fatigued from the same cycles of empty warring repeating itself that everybody feels impotent and the silicon chips inside the heads of would-be shooters everywhere start flipping with greater frequency.

Needs work, I know.

Re: Another Campus Shooting

i think that if we as a nation decided that the hours upon endless hours of breathless attention and fame and interest and notiety and discussion of manifestos and motivations and all that motherfucking other nonsese were doing nothing but emboldening and motivating the next wave of motherfuckicg coward, we might just be better off.

why do we need to hear the name and seee the face and read the manifesto and watch the you tubes and ponder the instagrams and poke at the facebooks of these killers, giving them all that they ever wanted and more? our media rewards these shooters, and we reward our media with hits and clicks and views and viewers.

don't show the picture. don't show the name. don't read the manifesto. make the shooter an anonymous nobody coward. not a celebrity, not a rockstar, not a magazine cover. not a beacon. not a pied piper for the next guy to follow.

This. I refuse to pay any mind to these stories, not out of disrespect to the victims, but in protest of the media glorification and obsession on the topic, at each occurrence.

The more often this happens, the less attention each incident will get. I can understand the need to get into the mind of the killer, to understand the motivation or the psychic disorder that brought it on, but that's a job for cops and psychologists. The general public doesn't have to be involved.

Re: Another Campus Shooting

Maybe, but there are just so many media out there, and creeps and naive kids find their way to it.

And of course the truthers.

Exactly. Don't glorify the killers, honor the victims.

Wow… it's in Troutdale, a town I had never heard of until two days ago when I was doing some vacation planning.

I'm going to be in that area five weeks from today.

Chicago - Dialogue Part I & II

Part I

Are you optimistic 'bout the way things are going?

No, I never ever think of it at all

Don't you ever worry, when you see what's going down?

Well, I try to mind my business, that is, no business at all

When it's time to function,
as a feeling human being,
will your Bachelor of Arts help you get by?

I hope to study further,
a few more years or so,
I also hope to keep a steady high

Will you try to change things,
use the power that you have,
the power of a million new ideas?

What is this power you speak of and this need for things to change?
I always thought that everything was fine, everything is fine

Don't you feel repression just closing in around?

No, the campus here is very, very free

Don't it make it angry,
where war is dragging on?

Well, I hope the president knows what he's into, I don't know, I just don't know

Don't you see starvation in the city where you live,
all the needless hunger, all the needless pain?

I haven't been there lately, the country is so fine,
my neighbors don't seem hungry 'cause they haven't got the time, haven't got the time

Thank you for the talk, you know, you really eased my mind
I was troubled by the shapes of things to come

Well, if you had my outlook, your feelings would be numb
You'd always think that everything was fine, everything was fine
