IGT 07/02 - Mets at Braves

NY Mets at Atlanta
When: 7:10 PM ET, Wednesday, July 2, 2014
Where: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
SportsDirect Inc.

Julio Teheran has done everything the Atlanta Braves could ask from their 23-year-old ace in the wake of season-ending injuries to Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy during spring training. Teheran makes his 18th start of the season Wednesday as the Braves host the New York Mets in the finale of their three-game series, ranking second in the National League in innings pitched and fifth in ERA. The Mets fell nine games behind Atlanta in the NL East with Tuesday’s 5-4 loss and have dropped six of their last seven.

Curtis Granderson has homered in both games of the series and has clubbed eight of his 12 shots this season on the road. New York, which remains without David Wright, looks to avoid the sweep behind rookie Jacob deGrom as he makes his 10th major-league start. The Braves could use a long outing from Teheran after the bullpen logged 4 1/3 innings on Tuesday.

TV:
7:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), SportSouth (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Mets RHP Jacob deGrom (1-4, 3.62 ERA) vs. Braves RH Julio Teheran (7-5, 2.34)

DeGrom has pitched well, but the Mets have not provided him with much run support, scoring three runs or fewer six times. He earned his first major-league victory June 21 at Miami with seven scoreless innings and allowed two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 frames at Pittsburgh on Friday. A ninth-round pick in the 2010 draft, deGrom is 0-4 with a 4.93 ERA in night games while holding opponents to a .191 average during the day.

Teheran beat Philadelphia on Friday, striking out nine while giving up one earned run in seven innings. Since allowing seven runs in a loss at Colorado on June 11, Teheran has issued just two walks with 25 strikeouts in 22 frames. Teheran has recorded 15 quality starts this season (tied for second-most in the majors), but the Braves have scored three runs or fewer in nine of his outings.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Atlanta’s bullpen set down the final six New York hitters Tuesday via strikeout.
2. The Mets have belted 15 homers in their last 14 games.
3. Braves 2B Tommy La Stella is day-to-day with a bruised right foot after being hit with a pitch on Tuesday.

Re: IGT 07/02 - Mets at Braves

Tonight the Braves have probably their best guy going after winning the first two in this series despite getting some pretty sucky outings from their starters that NYM bats weren't able to take advantage of (or not enough anyway).

Now since I don't care one way or the other what they do tonight, they will probably do something grand.
And then...

When they lose three in a row, I don't watch until they win again.

I missed most of the 2003 season that way.

I saw that. A bases clearing double for Atlanta. I consider it a victory that Fkn Frdy Frmn didn't hit it.

I know, he scored.

My nemesis face^

This deGrom vs. Matsuzaka who will get demoted thing isn't going so well. Maybe it's Montero.

Re: IGT 07/02 - Mets at Braves

This leaving early thing...it's by design? Or are they just misreading a pitchers move? It has happened so much. I don't think Young has to ever leave early to get the base. Nice steal though.

Pretty funny that we're trying to play out the week with no backup infielders.

Teheran saving a run like a US goalkeeper.

Justin is meat.

Mets would do good to strike fast if they can get out of this.

Man, it'd be nice to start getting deGromeo some winzzz.

Do the Mets even have a 'strike fast' move in their bag?

They do, and it's name is Eric Young Joonyah.

They also have a Laggy tool. Manufacturer apparently didn't design them to work in tandem.

I can laugh at anything but this is no longer funny. He left too early again, this time they clip his wings.

We joke about this base running bullshit but really, who is responsible?

Re: IGT 07/02 - Mets at Braves

One of us should have kept a running tally of base runners erased this year.
Seems to me that the rate we've thrown away hard-fought base runners has been unusually high, and by unusually I mean absurdly.

That's two hard liners down the RF line this inning that were just foul.

And then both guys struck out on the next pitch

I like the manager running out there, having his showcase moment. But Gary has a point. It takes time.

I just like how Gary (and many others) talk about the "unintended consequences" of replay rule. How did none of them see this coming?

Laggy's glove is our best asset right now.

Best, non-pitching asset, anyhow.

Young makes the first out ... saves him the trouble of running into one later.

Their infield has made 4 or 5 plays this series that ours couldn't and wouldn't make.

I guess the fact that he never lands again on the soul of his foot and therefore doesn't push off a second time is the reason it qualifies as legal.

deGrom was one pitch from getting out of it in the 1st.
Of course we would have found another way to lose it had he done so, but at least it would have been more interesting.
Instead, there hasn't been a hint since then that the Mets have been in this game.

I didn't see that play Gary was talkng about. When Tejeda was looking in the outfield during a hit ball? I'll have to take a look at that. Sounds like it was just one of those things but I still have to see what that looked like.

Sheesh, it's like I'll go watch Tejeda staring into center during a pitch and torture myself. Torture, just an unintended consequence of watching Mets games.

Re: IGT 07/02 - Mets at Braves

No shame in getting shut down by Teheran, I guess, but we couldn't afford to anyway.

Tejada's back was turned when the 1st hit went. I haven't reviewed it but reasonable to assume he might have had a shot were he on his toes and, who's to say whether he was even positioned properly. Of course the walks that followed were dumb mistakes themselves.

I like Terry and don;t much like this team but someone other than us fans ought to answer for all the heads-up-the-ass plays this team has given us --- one or two a night without fail.
